Hi, I just wanted to say thank you for your vast knowledge and advice for people who are new to the world of photography. I have just finished reading your E-Book and I am currently on the look out for a nice FM to get me started. Your E-Book was extremely helpful and explained a lot that other videos and online sources often skip over. I look forward to more of your videos. Thank you for the hard work!

Tokina's rather ungrateful response to Ken Wheeler's advocacy of this lens is deplorable in terms of their refusal to give him a couple of lenses to make prizes of. Ken has his faults - highly personal, public attacks on others for one - but still, sales of this lens made Tokina a tidy sum. Many, like me, have benefited from Ken's advice with regard to "legacy" Nikkors. This Tokina is a Great lens as you say. I went for the Sigma 105mm in the end though because, although optical performance is similar, image stabilisation is useful for hand-held macro work. I'm great a fan of AI-AI-S Nikkors owing to their superb all-metal construction, optical performance, and absence of electronic guff, so I sold my soul to the Devil with the Sigma. On reflection, I think the Tokina would have been the better choice. Damn! BTW, what mic did you use for this? Sounds great! Best wishes, Ant.

Glad you agree that this lens offers a lot of performance. I use it with a D850 for headshots all the time when I don’t want to lug my 70-200 to a shoot. I also appreciate the AF/MF switch and ease of manual focusing, especially for macro work.

I have this lens. I did a lot of research before buying this lens. Very sharp. Comparable with the Nikon AFS. One advantage over all AFS models for macro not mentioned is that with the aperture ring you can use extension tubes to expand macro capability

I like this lens quite a bit. I bought mine off of Ken's recommendation. Tokina is the only 3rd party lens brand I've bought for use with my Nikons, because of their robust physical construction. Clean copies of this lens used seem to hover around $250 at present which seems like a pretty good deal. The other Tokina I get a lot of use from is the 12-24 f4 DX lens, bought clean in box with all accessories for $99. I use it for interior shots for local realtors. The fun thing about that lens is that it is usable on FX from 18-24mm's as well.
I wholeheartedly agree with you that I prefer my AF lenses not to have focus motors in them, and I want them to have aperture rings!

  • @diegoscopia

That "push-pull" MF AF switch is just like the one micro 4/3rds Olympus lenses use, and extremely convenient way of doing it because as you noted it allows for a dampened MF action but quick AF if needed (although in m43 it's focus by wire)

I have just bought this lens on ebay for a good price , Ken Rockwell has a detailed review of this lens as well as the angry photographer , I prefer the nikon screw drive af system and prefer to buy used lenses with this method of AF as the AFS seem to suffer from lack of replacement parts after Nikon decides their time is up and I have a nikon 70-210 af that the electrical contacts have stopped working on but this will still work in manual focus and as it has a proper aperture ring unlike the G series lenses which would be completely dead.

I thought you'd be talking about the nikon 60mm macro, Ken's other highly and regularly recommended lens.
I had both the sigma and tokina 100mm macro lenses for nikon. Both were excellent, images from sigma I found I preferred at macro length, but both similar for portrait. Tokina felt a lot more solid though, the sigma didn't have the same rugged build.

Ken has always had GAS. He's nothing more than a gear review channel and he always feels the need to upgrade gear; when for someone like him, it's completely unnecessary due to the fact he has no proven photography talent when it comes to his own portfolio - or lack there of. For him, it's a gear addiction.
There are plenty of other you tubers that will blow your mind with their images with only one or two cameras and several lenses to do it with. Unlike Angry, who has ten cameras and probably two hundred lenses and nothing to show for.

He's given bad reviews to lenses he's never even had his hands on. I forgot which lens it was, but he shit all over a certain lens in a video review without even having it and about 90% of the commenters were like - that lens is great, what are you talking about? He never did answer to that and stopped talking about that lens all together.
Basically if I understand this right. He married someone that later died, and he was able to claim her life insurance money and death benefits and that is what financed his addiction.

He also claimed he lived in Russia and spoke Russian fluently. He said some things in Russian and boasted about being bilingual. Then someone who is Russian in the comment section called him out and said that he barely understood what he said and it was completely wrong.

Also, if u really want to get a serious look at the twisted mind of this guy, look up his other where he talks about gravitational flux and other physics and other weird crap. He’s a good salesman in that he appears fully convinced that what he’s saying is 100% correct. He’s that kid in high school that could never get a date, the D & D obsessed guy whose only friends were other goth weirdos and now he’s found a venue and subject matter that gets him attention and now he’s wallowing in the attention he gets. “Angry” is spot on. The dude has serious anger issues. A few days ago I wrote a very long comment on one of his videos (it was on his overall view of the Nikon Df-he was trashing it completely without giving any specific reasons why he didn’t like the camera-most commenters loved the camera and were calling him out for giving a “rather useless review”) wherein I pointed out his overly critical and harsh typed responses to several of his viewers. He was the weirdo bullied kid that’s now a bullying adult.
He claims to do product photography work for big companies. Can you imagine this guy coming into your corporate office with jailhouse-looking tattoos and piercings all over the place?! I don’t buy it. I think the guy is a complete sham.

Hi Brian, have you tried the newer ATX-i version of the Tokina? I have the Micro-Nikkor 105mm f2.8 VR but it's stranded on the other side of the planet (or rather I'm stranded from it - long story involving a certain virus) and I don't want to replicate the Nikkor. I'm also (oddly enough) considering the older Micro-Nikkor 105mm f4 and it's big brother the f2.8 version - both of which are of course MF. Your thoughts will be appreciated. I already have a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f2.8 AI-S as well.

There are quite a few good ones to choose from. For Nikon, you can't go wrong with the 105/2.5, either version, or the Series E 100mm f/2.8. For Canon, the FD 100mm f/2 is superb and I recently shot several rolls with the LTM 100mm f/3.5 and was really impressed. I don't have much experience with other manufacturers in that focal length, though I've heard very good things about the Pentax SMC 100mm f/2.8 and Konica Hexanon 100mm f/2.8.

Ken most likely suggests this lens for several reasons . 1, cost for performance. 2, the innertonal details or Microcontrast. 3, and of course most macro lenses are decently sharp.
The lens is longer than those other older designs for a few reasons. One mainly because it is a macro and the lens elements design for getting closer to subjects . The longer movement of the focusing element (s) . I have also heard good things about this lens year’s ago. If it has good microcontrast you should get really nice depth of information into the skin tones . Also a nice 3d separation from your backgrounds . It’ll probably handle light roll off nicely. I find this true with many of the old Nikkor non ai lenses.

I've just bought this Tokina mint & boxed for the astonishing price of £119 U.K. with 6 month warranty (Nov 2023). I think it has become unfashionable & obscure in these mirrorless times (as it has no autofocus motor.) It works great and produces lovely images on my D3S & D3X, but (SURPRISE!) it also works great with the F2Z converter on my Z6. The the AF electrical contacts give the Z6 body all the focus data, so you get a focus confirmation box around your focus point (which turns from red to green when you are in focus.) This is a much better experience than manual focus on a DSLR (where the foucs point and focus confirm dot are in totally different places in the viewfinder.) Manual focus with AF-D lenses is great on Z bodies.

I have that in a Nikon mount, sharp lens no argument, my concern would be the quality of the electronics used in them, are they using prime spec components? One of the reason I started buying the legacy Nikon glass is the absence of electronics that will eventually fail. Most concerning is the Nikon “G” series and newer lenses without an aperture ring for manual control. Expensive rocks given enough time. I would suspect Nikon is spec’ing prime electronic components in their manufacturing though. My humble perspective. Enjoy your videos btw.

Do lens electronics usually fail? I don’t have evidence one way or another but the electronics really shouldn’t be stressed at all and it’s not like there’s some crazy complex circuit in there anyway...personally I wouldn’t worry about it.

Brian's Photo Show My understanding is parts of the autofocus system, the electronics, not just the mechanical portion, is inside of the lens, at least on the Nikon lenses. Not sure about the aftermarket lenses. This lens may have just the mechanics in it. If it has a board with electronics on it in time it will fail, just a matter of how soon. I think Nikon decided to eliminate the aperture ring, rendering them useless once the electronics fail, so the lens will have to be replaced. Never a problem with the older manual lenses.

You're right, the Nikkor 105 f/2.8 AI-S has 10 elements in 9 groups, whereas the AF-S VR version has 14 elements in 12 groups, and of course is made largely from PLASTIC and stuffed to the gunnels with electronics. I'd give it 10 years tops. Interestingly - or probably not in fact - DXO Mark rates the Nikkor AF-S 105 2.8 micro lower in sharpness than the Tokina, by one point.
