  • Set to a pulsating score by Philip Glass, In the Upper Room is a signature work for Twyla Tharp, which contrasts the power and energy of modern dance with the speed and aerial dexterity of a more classical language.

It's called "In the Upper Room". Glass wrote it specifically for this piece.

Tharp is highly overrated. She managed to find her niche by comercializing her choreography for mainstream entertainment, allowing her financial success that most concert oriented choreographers (practically all, actually) will never achieve. Financial success is not the same as artistic acheivement, however. Nevertheless, she continues to be commissioned by noted dance companies while all she ever did was create some razmatazz for Broadway and film productions.

Actually “Tharp” is not overrated! I want to be a dancer and she’s the one I look up to!

@@matthewrust Yes! I am a dance teacher and I also teach kids dance history. Twyla Tharp has a place in my teaching. I don't love everything Tharp has created (I don't love everything by any of my inspirations) but even on a "bad day" Tharp has innovation and freed up lots of pre-conceived notions about ballet and modern dance.
