America is depressing to visit. Then when we visit family they expect me to pay for everything. Especially my daughter. Then add up Airbnb, restaurants is so damn expensive I usually land up canceling the trip.
We go back once a year. Last time stayed for 2 days and took a cruise back to Japan.
My complaint is the attitude of people and overpriced restaurants. I take my Filipina asawa with me .
She doesn’t really care much when it comes to America.
Next time I’ll see the doctor and have testing done for
      Both of us.

I completely 100% understand what you are experiencing. I’m near your age and I had the same apprehensions you have. I am in US taking care of some business. There are two aspects to coming back. One is the emotional reaction to going back, which I can control and remember I am ok. Life is different here now. The contentiousness is still here, maybe worse. I just don’t watch TV or talk to anyone about all the drama here. That works well. I go for walk every day. I make sure to drink enough water. I stay connected with my friends in SE Asia to remind me of my wonderful life. I go to Trader Joe’s here. It’s a lot
Less expensive. I eat simple and avoid restaurants for the most part. McDonald’s is the cheapest but easy to spend $10 a meal. There are cheap ways to live you have to look for them. Trader Joe’s works for me. They have a lot of premade meals to microwave. I prefer the salads and other meals to stay healthy. Drink water. That affects our mood. Slow down in your mind. We traumatize ourselves when we anticipate things being so hard. I am like you, I’m not too tech savvy and need help. The US is not that way, so I have to just keep asking until I get my result. I use Uber and walk and don’t rent a car. I use public transportation because where I am in US has good transportation. I want to have a positive experience so future trips will be less traumatic. I would set a healthy boundary with yourself to not gamble, drink, or do other things that will make you spend more money. I go to libraries when I’m in US. There’s a lot to do there. I walk. Some people are friendly. I’m like you in that I need to talk face to s face about my business. I would say keep in touch with your friends in the Phillipines and Janet. Let them know how you feel when you are here. That will really help. I stay in Airbnb and that works well for me. I mostly stay in Vietnam and Thailand where my accommodations are $250 a month and my living is $1200. It’s double when I am in US. I just save my money for when I have to go home. It will be ok Mike. I think part of your apprehension is because it’s been three years, plus last time you were in US is was post Covid. It is chaotic in US. Bird flu, huge fires, shootings. Instability, etc. Just try to stay connected to your close friends and Janet and get support. You’ll be ok. The Calmer you are the better choices you will make. You’re a truly great guy who I respect. Just go slow in addressing everything. It will be ok. Try to eat healthy, they really helps me and drinking lots of water. Where I am in US they will not take any more appointments for social security. The woke movement is still alive and well. I just stay away from you. Keep us posted. You are loved by many 🙏🏼

My recommendation is to find a subscriber that is willing to put you up. They might have a rental property on the cheap to put you up. If you stay at hotel, it is going to be expensive even if you stay at a budget hotel. Yes, everything is extremely expensive. You really need to stay with family or friends. Otherwise, it will break you.

  • @markmitera4521

One of the reasons I left the US is that I was only able to see my primary care 2-3 times a year because it was so hard to get an appointment and would have to wait an additional 2-3 months to see a specialist. Unless you are paying cash upfront, insurance is going to require a referral from a primary care physician to see a specialist. Granted, you could go to an urgent care clinic, but you are going to get someone that has no clue about your medical history. Food prices are through the roof. If you plan on eating out instead of cooking at an extended stay hotel, you are looking at around $18/meal at a fast food joint. $30-40/meal at a mid-grade restaurant. McDonald's dollar menu would leave a child still hungry afterward. . A small coffee at McDonald's is going to run you about $2. A local coffee shop, about $5, and Starbucks about $8. As far as getting a temporary job, at your age, forget it. There aren't greeter positions anymore and jobs are scarce, despite what the news says. There are a lot of job listings, but these are ghost listings and companies are just looking for young/able bodied talent to fill positions. At your age, you are too much of a liability to take a chance on. Finding work over age 50 is extremely hard. A low budget extended stay hotel is going to run you close to $140-$150/week in the Vegas area. If you have any friends that have an extra bed or couch to crash on, that is going to be your best bet and you aren't going to want to stay any longer than you have to. Make sure you have any appointments you need to do all set up before you arrive and have them all booked within 1-2 weeks of each other. Otherwise you are probably going to be looking at having to be back in the States for up to 6 months or longer.

I haven't made it to the Philippines yet but I have looked into what it will cost me to go back to my hometown area in the USA for 1 month, including travel & living expenses, and it comes to about $7000. The hotel is about $3000, the rental car about $2000, $1000 for airfare & $1000 for food, gas & misc expenses. I think I'd only do this once/year and not during holiday time periods to keep the costs from being even higher and I'd still be paying for most of my living expenses of the Philippines (rent, electric, etc.) which would be at least another $3000 for that 1 month, bringing the total cost to about $10,000 for a 1 month trip back home. It's hard for me to justify that expense for a 1 month trip back to my hometown in America.

Mike, I can't begin to tell you how much money you'll need daily as you have many variables. Outside of the media not much has changed in the States. Yes, prices are higher. Personally i think you need to do everything online as that is where we are heading. If i have one suggestion it would be to use Google Fi for your cell service. It is the same price no matter where you are and i have no problem with receiving messages with my same US number. Just a suggestion, not a plug. I've used it and Google phones since Fi's inception in 2015. I'm heading back soon to "tie up loose ends" after we made a decision here will be our home. We've been married and had a home here long before this UA-cam crap (for the most part) started. Good luck Mike and i would try to learn how to do everything online safely.

If you really do intend to come back to the U.S., plan, plan, plan!!. It's expensive!! Try to do as much as you can online there in PI. We live in Albuquerque (Filipina gf and I). Right now because of the bird flu going on, eggs alone are through the roof. A cheap dozen of eggs is about $7 which has caused a ripple effect on everything with eggs. A couple of bagel and egg sandwiches, a hash brown and a drink for breakfast is over $20/$25. You're better off driving to ABQ from Vegas (9 hr drive), staying in ABQ, then driving to Santa Fe (45 mins). Actually, there might be a credit union branch in ABQ, check it out. Doctor shortage in NM, make an appt from there, it may take a few months to get an appt at the Heart Hospital (really good care) here in ABQ. If you want to send a Balikbayan box back to Philippines, they're here in ABQ also. Good Luck Mike!!

I've been hanging out in the Las Vegas area for the last 3 years. I'm 60 something, retired. The area, and America itself, has indeed changed since the covid days...but not in any way that would surprise you or induce culture shock. Your biggest thing here will be the expensive prices. That has been the biggest change, affecting the most people. Some stuff is worse than others like gas prices haven't changed a whole lot...at least, compared to say, food prices, rent & housing expenses, and cigarettes. Oh boy! Those have really went up! $$$ So have overall vehicle costs.
    A possible solution for you...
First....understand, you can do this easy & expensive or you can go not-so-easy & cheaper.
I suggest you rent a u haul van, camp in it while you get your stuff done. Just don't dilly-dally! Don't take a month or two, go over there and git-r-done....kick butt and take names! Where to park the van and camp??
Plenty of BLM land just outside of Pahrump. Or Lovell Canyon will work too, just outside of Vegas.
Make it a 2 "week" trip and you'll be too busy for boredom or casinos!

Unsure if these are available in the Vegas area, but where I live there are long-term stay hotels that I've used when I knew I'd be somewhere for a shorter period than a typical apartment lease. I think it could cut your shelter costs in half versus staying in a traditional hotel or the AirBnB/VRBO route.
As for the reasons you're going back, I recommend you get with some of your local American friends that have perhaps addressed some of these concerns remotely instead of making the trip back to the US. Everything you mentioned sounded to me like something you can handle online or via telephone, with the appropriate effort and perhaps assistance from friends that have done it. Something to keep in mind as well is that the "in-person" work system post-COVID doesn't look the same as the pre-COVID days (I'm speaking specific to America, as that's where I am). Many of us haven't returned to the office, so going to see someone in person may not be a viable option in certain circumstances. You'd be pretty frustrated to learn after you've arrived here that you can't just show up to a building and talk to another human being. I live in the SE and it has become commonplace now that when you go into a business, you're likely to be met with a machine instead of a human as your first point of contact, and in some cases there are literally no humans even in the building.

Get all your finances down to one or two simple forms. there is no need to endure that expense. You have many friends who can help you if you get stuck. As far as medical goes, dont start a path with a health system that you cant maintain long term. Go to something in the Philippines or Thailand. This way you can continue treatment in case they find something. Just my 3 cents. PS: You are blessed with a willing helper (your wife), dont create something where she CANT assist.

Biggest benefit of doing so: The Navy FCU has millions of active duty, reserve, and Veteran members. Active duty members are serving around the world. So the Navy FCU, unlike banks, won't close your account because all of your account activity is, for example, based in the Philippines, especially since now there's a large rebuilding of a U.S. military presence in the Philippines.

When there, help set off expenses for them by helping to pay for stuff. They may have an extra room or car you could use. Pay for an oil change or buy some groceries. Stay on good terms. Even a new set of tires would be cheaper to buy than paying a month worth of rental fees.

Of course you will be meeting friends and family and it usually over dinner, which is always expensive even though they are not fancy restaurants. 14 usd for a hot dog, fries and a drink. Go for dinner and just have a hamburger, fries, maybe two glasses of beer was closer to 30 or so. Many meeting like this add up quick.
Renting a car is not so easy when you no longer have your own car and insurance. Since I no longer have any car insurance, I need to pay for liability, as well as coverage for the rental car. That insurance was 17 for liability and 30 for the rental, so each day the insurance is 47 usd plus what ever the daily rate for the car itself.
If you no longer have health insurance, too young for medicare, I had to get travel insurance that would cover emergencies at a US hospital. Most will cover you outside the US, but not in the US so you have to shop around.

I currently live in Vegas (Vegas Scott). I don’t think there’s much culture difference to worry about if you even notice anything. Financially, another story. The city went from bargain location to mid to upper location. Lodging and food are high. Even worse, with the LA fire some displaced people will be residing here, possibly some move here, and rentals will be going up. You may get lucky at a bargain casino if they don’t get you with “Resort Fees” and parking fees (yes these are new since you left) and aren’t cheap. Maybe get lucky with a Circus Circus or Oyo (Hooters) but most likely some motel out of the core area. Super Bowl and other events will jack up rates. Also busy convention season. You may have better luck in NM. Hope I get a chance to say hi and meet you both while you’re out here. Good luck. 🙏
