    Well now I have 5 Blue Jays, Mom, Dad & 3 fledgling. 5 Squirrels and God knows how m any chickadees and nuthatches. We also have a downy Mom and Dad, and a few red bellied woodpeckers. The loud hairys dont get along with the jays.. I even had a huge crow try for the peanuts this week. Happy bird watching to all♡11 turkeys we counted as well. Its busy now.

    Grackles can be a bit annoying if they’re in a mood. But they will chase off the hawks and crows to protect our little backyard songbirds so I can’t hate them. They are quite stunning in the sunlight.

    My Common Grackles are of the "bronze mutation" up here on Cape Cod, MA. And ours do NOT like sharing with Blue Jays either. 9 out of 10 times the Grackles win the stare down sometimes a big blue will get overly assertive and that's usually when all hell breaks loose...!!! I've been in the avian field now for nearly 30yrs so i've seen my fair share of what both Grackles and Blue Jays are capable of when there in fighting mode.

    It's usually "size wins." My favorite battles are between red bellies and mockingbirds. I've had several minutes-long standoffs on my deck as they both take swings at each other with their beaks. The red belly usually wins, unless the mockingbird is completely on the juice with owning the territory.

    Wonderful video. Interesting how the Grackles will plant both feet on top of the feeder, whereas the Blue Jays always cling to the side with that back claw. I know that they(like other Corvids) can grasp with their feet -- unlike Grackles and most songbirds. I put suet out as well and the bully in my corner of the world is a Mockingbird. He dominates both Grackles and Blue Jays -- but he's a fun bird! I like them all for different reasons. . Your videos are beautiful!

      They aren't that close. They are about as close to each other as they both are to warblers and swallows. Grackles belong to the icteridae family along with new world orioles and meadowlarks, while bluejays belong to the corvid family with crows and ravens. At their closest, they are just both songbirds.

      They are in the blackbird family. Fairly common on the east coast of the US. The larger boat tailed variety is in Florida. Crows may be black in color but are actually closer to the Blue Jays in the family CORVIDAE. So anyone on here telling you grackles and crows are in the same family is wrong.

      They are members of the blackbird family and we have many different species of blackbirds here in the states including red-winged, Brewer's and Rusty. Grackles are related. Crows and starlings may be black but are not related. In fact, crows are related to jays believe it or not.

      It’s interesting to watch who displaces whom. I have nesting grackles for the first time this year, usually they come en mass with spring migration, empty a few feeders full and then move on once the grasses are full up. I don’t have many blue jay, but these grackles will move off feeder for just about any species. No bullying at all. Top of the feeder food chain in my NE USA home are the woodpeckers. And I have never witnessed any aggressive behavior from them. They show up and every bird scatters.

    • @mthrofchaos4437
      @mthrofchaos4437 6 років тому +1

      They've been in steep decline for many years because they are considered pests. There are so many that it's hard to believe that they could ever become endangered but the population has declined 58% since 1966. Bullies or not, I would hate to see them face extinction.

  • @doro8856

    On the 3rd year of the grackles arriving, they completely took over. They're not just greedy, or aggressive, they're homicidal. They chase down the juvie starlings and will kill them without a moment's hesitation. They won't let any other birds at the feeders, and their numbers are so high that I've all but stopped putting feed in my feeders now. Of all the birds in the world I can truly say the grackles are the only ones I don't like. I found this video depressing just to see them moving in.

      that's it's a good thing grackles kill starlings cause starling are a invasive that don't belong in the us.
      also that people often mess with birds that keep grackles in check to protect song birds.for example blue jays can bully grackles off feeders and kill their nestlings.but people often kill blue jays cause they view them has pest cause they bully other birds.another common predator song birders mess with are hawks cause they don't like seeing what they view has their birds be eaten.

      Plus the grackles have been around us humans so many decades that they don't see us as a threat mainly because we are docile to them and moat would be around public parking lots where cars are moving, farm areas, etc.

    The Steller's jay (a relative of the blue jay) is a very aggressive bird. If you ever eat outside when they're around they will hound you mercilessly, waiting for an opportunity to get to the food.

    Grackles are so gorgeous! They look related almost to corvids. What bird family do they belong to? Have you ever had crows, ravens and grackles feeding at the same time?

    • @jackmorrison7379
      @jackmorrison7379 7 років тому +4

      Grackles are related to blackbirds, but not to crows which are in the Crow/Jay family, the Corvids as you rightly say.

    Grackles are a menace, they are there birdfeeder bullies. They add stress and anxiety to the kinder songbirds. Flock of thousands gather they’re scary, I read my yard of them with a pellet gun. My songbirds are so happy and content and stress-free sorry if I offend anybody.

      I've never had a problem with grackles, usually just one or two resident breeding pairs around. No large flocks of Grackles here. I should inform you though that it is illegal to just kill Grackles which are native migratory songbirds and are protected by federal law without good reason . They can be humanely killed under certain conditions such as:
      www.aphis.usda.gov/sites/default/files/Grackles_WDM%20Technical%20Series_April%202020.pdf
      All grackles are federally protected by the Migratory Bird
      Treaty Act, but actions to control damage, including lethal
      take, is allowed under a “Standing Depredation Order” (50
      CFR 21.43) which allows take of grackles “…when found
      committing or about to commit depredations upon
      ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock or
      wildlife, or when concentrated in such numbers and
      manner as to constitute a health hazard or other
      nuisance.” The federal standing depredation order
      overrides state regulations or the need for a state permit.
      I'm not an expert so do your own "Googling" for your area.

    I have usually a couple blue jays and a couple grackles eating sunflower seeds in my back deck, today there were like 6 to 10 grackles there and not letting the blue jays (or smaller birds) in.

    Birds don't like those hard milo seeds. I suspect seed companies put them in for cheap filler so the bag'll look full of good stuff.

    I love ALL our native birds, including the grackles. There are a lot of bully birds, including some folks call their favorite. Maybe they just don't know those particular birds' behaviors, some of them not pretty. But grackles are fascinating, and I have a common grackle that visits on occasion, sometimes every day just to grab snacks from one of our platform feeders. He would just eat, many times with a cardinal or other bird right across from him, and then he'd go to the bird bath, get a drink of water, and leave. Never bothered or bullied anyone. I love the weird sounds they make and crack up at the puffing up thing they do. Those displays are pretty cool. Love the video.
