People forget, all this UL gear is a relatively new development. When I was a kid, it wasn't unusual to see people carry 7lb, 2-p tents and backpacks that weighed nearly as much. Then we'd also be hiking in cotton clothes with denim jeans and a pair of tennis/running shoes.

At 1:39, when you say "That sounds like an awful idea," is meme-worthy.
The bad advice I was given (not really advice) was that "you can only really go backpacking out west." I live in Ohio. We don't have the wide-open spaces or the huge national parks, but we have our share of wilderness, plus the neighboring states have plenty, too. What matters is if you enjoy it, not whether someone else thinks it's "real backpacking."

The best way to do it is take a basic kit. If its just a school backpack, a granola bar, a cheap water bottle, and other basic stuff: thats a fine start. I've gone miles with just that. But while you're doing that, take notes of issues you run into. Did you get hungry while hiking? Take more food. Does your back hurt? Save up for a new bag. Incrementally improve your loadout until you find what works best.

When I look in the pack I am using this weekend, same deal (poncho liner instead of the bag, but hey). Working with what you got and having a good plan B is all you need to have fun.

Hey Jeremiah, great Video! Tip from someone who has endured the same thing...set your white balance to manual and lock it in before you film. It will keep the camera from going "hot" on you. You don't have to get fancy with white cards, just adjust for you skintone on the screen until you like it. You'll never chase down auto WB in post 😉

Great advice thanks for the video. I selected a Osprey Levity 45 (framed pack) as my lightweight pack. It has a frame and weighs in at only 860 grams (1.9lbs). The thing to be cautious about is that it is only rated for up to 20lbs of gear, but for my 2-3 day trips that is plenty. Just wanted to put another option out there for your viewers who may want a light weight framed pack.

Once I get it on my back I am fine. I suppose, if I left my 35mm DSLR and two lenses I could lighten the load that way but I never know when there is an drop dead gorgeous image that I must catch.

Brutally honest backpacking advice: 95% of the backpacking youtubers are advertisers. Gear reviews are advertisements. Lists like "7 items every backpacker needs" are advertisements. "Gear I regret buying" is an advertisement for gear you should buy instead. When you look for videos on backpacking, you mostly find ads and sponsored content, videos of a dude sitting at home, talking about gear (they don't have or got for free) and sneaking in affiliate links and referral codes. There is some value in those, but always take it with a grain of salt.

I agree- you don't need the latest or greatest but- coming from someone who lives in the Appalachian Mountains and volunteers in rescue at times- please don't come unprepared. I don't work the AT- I work the Lamarion Hunting Reserve when they need me but, I hear the stories and I can definitely relate. Season just opened not long ago and I'm sure any day now that phone is going to ring- and I'd say the biggest problem we've had over the last few years is ppl abandoning traditional navigation for technology- which then fails them. The best piece of advice I heard in this video- please get a compass, print a paper map, and know how to use them to find your way out. So many guys come depending on just their cell phone or, other technologies- they all fail at times. We've got it pretty easy- the ppl we find are generally scared and shaken up but o.k.- it's not a particularly dangerous area tbh. We have a few swamps but, if you have common sense you'll be alright here. But the guys who work the AT- man I don't envy those men. They risk much more than we do and they don't always get a happy ending. Don't be afraid, just respect it for what it is and be prepared- you'll have a great time.

All this UL stuff hasn't been around that long, but I will say, it sure does make things easier. I do endorse getting a good pack tho. Speaking from experience, I have loaded up a cheap old pack with a heavy 50lb load many times and been in a good deal of pain on the trail. A good pack can make a heavy load seem a lot lighter. And then you can upgrade your heavy gear down the road. When you're struggling to make it to camp because your pack is loaded up past its limit and is digging into your shoulders and hips so hard that you're risking exhaustion/passing out on the trail, that can be a dangerous safety issue involving search and rescue. And it does happen to people. Unfortunately that's one of those things that takes a few trips to figure out.

I am relatively hard to fit for a backpack. I am short, with wide shoulders, and a barrel chest. In order to get a good fit for me - I prefer a framed backpack with a LOT of adjustment features. Yes, the backpack is "heavy" at about 3.5 pounds. But, it has a large enough adjustment range to actually fit me well! I have yet to find an ultralight pack that will actually fit me well enough to be comfortable. Adding 2-ish pounds to my base weight out gets me a LOT of comfort when actually carrying the load.
Fit is as important as weight.

I always say the best way to learn is just to GO AND DO IT. Test your gear and bring back ups! That means bring a GPS AND a map, bring a few fire starting methods, and know how to mend gear on the trail. It's not about being paranoid of the worst, it's about being PREPARED for an unexpected hiccup or fault in gear. My sister and I at ages 7 and 10 would spend a week every summer camping on our property and challenge ourselves not to go in the house. We learned a lot just from that about planning ahead, what worked last time, what we needed to leave behind, remembering what the weather could do, how to ration water and bathe, and how to store food. Our parents tried to come out and do supply runs, but we would make them go away unless dad was making a fire lol. Start SMALL if you can and learn what it really feels like to have to plan for life in the backcountry, you will come away from your first trip with so much knowledge. My best advice for a beginner would be to try and use videos like this as a supplement for real time experience, and not as a way of planning for your first trip( and that's not an insult to Jeremiah, who is a cool dude and makes great content) . Just know, you don't know until YOU go and do it. Your experience will be unique.

    My worst advice was:
    1) take dehydrated food as it’s lighter. Makes sense, but where I hike it’s an upland area, so I need to carry water which means I ended up having to carry water to rehydrate expensive dehydrated food, rather than just taking “normal food” that’s cheaper and tastes better.
Sorry to say but imho you can’t beat tinned spam or tuna with any meal that you make on the trail :)
    2) “2 is 1” so carry a spare. This is true if I was prepping (trade off is weight versus survival) but not for hiking (trade off is weight versus comfort). If I’m hiking and my kit fails and I couldn’t work around it (never happened yet) I would go home early, or drink water rather than coffee and eat cold food.
Best advice was lose 1 pound carrying heavy kit rather than £1,000 buying lightweight kit that you will only use for weekend trips.

Right now the garmin in-reach is the only thing eating at me in terms of buying stuff. Living in Southwest Kansas and many trips to the Colorado mountains since they are just next door, you just can never rely on any signal. People rely a lot on the phone to save them. Those wicking t-shirts stink up if they are expensive or cheaper and you will have to replace them eventually or not be able to stand your own smell no matter how many times you wash them, eventually the smell just won't go. Hey buddy thanks for the video...though I couldn't disagree more with the "what you're comfortable with" setup...IMO YOU, have no idea what you want other than ALL the comforts that you have at home...you want nothing to change but the scenery. That is the last person that should be making those decisions...mostly because the bad ones will cost you money that could have been used elsewhere and will ensure that your first trip is miserable (and expensive). For example I give you....every backpacker that ever lived....thats how we all start. The smartest one of us, yet to be identified, might pick up a recipe from Julia Child before entering a cooking competition with a Michelin star chef. Why would this be different. Right here on youtube, you can invest the time to know the difference between camping, survival and backpacking before you buy gear piece one. You can learn every mistake, what to look out for...you know...the good part of the internet. Once you are fine tuned on an idea....follow the recipe. Pick one and follow it. I call my kit the youtube special and guess what...its great gear. It's not perfect but I've only bought 2 tents and I just bought my third pack ever...always smaller.
You, newbie, don't know diddly and it would go a long way for you to shut up, take good advice, and FOLLOW.
Backpacking cost between 1500 and 2000 dollars. That will outfit you with the best for years to come and I will argue there is no cheaper hobby...unless you do it like the rest of us ....then yachting is cheaper.
Unless you are already a minimalist, follow a recipe, or get the heck out of my kitchen
signed: a guy with zero video's and 3 followers.

Worst advice I was ever given: Ultra light dog packs are just as sturdy as the regular weight ones. Umm no, not even close. Dogs don't care what they bump into at speed or scrape and duck into chasing something. You want thick wear resistant ripstop, double stitching and extra strong buckles and a reinforced handle just in case you have to heft the pooch. Great video, had me laughing. I have been hiking and camping for over 40 years and it amazes me on the bad advice I have heard over the years. Use common sense, judge your abilities realistically, if it looks dangerous or stupid don't do it and have fun. Cheers and keep them coming.
