The Grapes of Wrath is my favorite book. I have read it a half dozen times. I have probably given away 10 copies of this book. My youngest son is reading it now. I hope he also reads In Dubious Battle by Steinbeck about the fruit pickers strike in California. I hope he develops a love for all Steinbeck's work.(Even the Pearl) The movie and the book. I loved the book. I also loved the movie. It wasn't as harsh as the book but it was so well written and so well acted that I can't complain about it. Well done John Ford. Woody Guthrie was so taken by it he wrote The Ballad of Tom Joad. I woould love to see a remake with Kathryn Bates as Ma Joad.
Ah, yes! Charley Grapewin (Uncle Henry from The Wizard of Oz) and Jane Darwell (the indomitable Mrs. Merriwether from Gone With the Wind)!

She would be PERFECT!!!!
It's too bad the movie didn't end like the book. The book ending was much more powerful, even with ma's assertion "we're the people."
