Because of Gene's suit, I wondered when we first started wearing pinstripes. The oldest reference to them is in Chaucer's _Canterbury Tales_ (late 1300s) wherein a character wore a pinstriped silk belt. Pinstripes were on suit pants only, in the early 1800s, and London banks made employees wear them as a sort of uniform. It was when Americans began wearing them in the 20th century that the stripes were put on suit jackets, too.
I wonder did the celebrities come up with the responses on their own or were there writers feeding them, I want to believe that they were all that witty and clever.
I believe they were coming up with those on their own, Mark Goodson didn't like that on HS that they did brief the celebrities on the questions and wrote the zingers that they said before answering the question. that was one of the things that hurt The MG/HS hour because Mark Goodson wouldn't let the celebrities be brief and/or write zingers like on the original HS. It just happened that Richard was good at seeing where the writers were going with the questions, and at times Charles as well.. Or some of the panel would try to work together to get the matches so the contestants could win the money..
I know they did that on Hollywood Squares, even heard quite a few stars mentioning it. I've often wondered if Match Game did it, too. However, I've never heard anyone say that they did.
Wow, John's mustache is just out of control, but his wife is such a hottie! Apparently, she doesn't mind hairstyles that went out o0f style in the 1920's, God bless her. Perhaps he has compensating qualities, like the size of his BLANK?
Wow! I thought that when I saw "yesterday's" show, but chose not to comment. She does resemble photos of a college-aged HC -- it's the cheeks, the glasses, hair, and mouth that give her a fair resemblance to the future lawyer and politician.
Gene and Brett didn't know much about pop culture either. Remember there was no internet and the 3 major TV channels. Newspapers were a major source of news but many were focused on local stories. I think the writers were more in touch with current events than the stars of the show.
John made a mistake of choosing Brett to help in the Super-Match. Brett was never much good at the game and by 1975, everybody who watched Match Game knew that.
That is so funny because the first thing I thought of (before reading the comments) was Stranger in the Night, then I realized that was the wrong song title (it's "Strangers" as Gene pointed out) and decided to go with Stranger in Paradise. I hated to see the contestant not get his big match though!
Arlene Francis is a very poor celebrity to have had on Match Game. The people on this show all need to be up on pop culture. A person who doesn't watch TV is not going to be good on this show. They need better vetting.
This is Arlene's second week on MG so far and she's been a sheer delight. It's good to have a variety of celebs as far as personality and age. She did a far better job than Dr. Joyce Brothers or Rona Barrett in that seat. (edit) After seeing this question, it's pretty clear that Arlene not knowing who the Pillsbury Dough Boy was didn't affect the game in the slightest. The contestant gave an answer that wasn't likely to match even if there had been 100 celebrities writing answers, and the answer Arlene gave was certainly no worse than any of the others. It wasn't that great of a question, frankly. One answer that came to my mind was "poke" (since the PDB was always getting poked in the belly, and maybe the bagel was made by poking its middle to make the hole).
Arlene is so funny ! I love this episode I love this show match game!Elizabeth Vasquez 😇
I loved the Pillsbury Dough Boy when I was a child.

I would have thought the Pilsbury Doughboy would try to *poke* a bagel.
Cute
12:18 “that’s the blind leading the blind” 😂
Bretts outfit reminds me of Mrs Roper from Threes Company
Yes. For sure.
The Pillsbury Doughboy tried to poke a bagel. Inuendo intended.
John looks like Woody Harrelson. His wife is gorgeous!
She looks kind of like Joyce Bulifant
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought that. Lol
Woody Harrelson, with a handlebar mustache.
Niles Crane! from Frasier.

Two days in a row that Arlene didn't know a pop culture reference....
she was also 68! I think for the dramatic cultural shifts in technology and culture throughout her lifetime, I think she always did pretty well :)
I was surprised that Arlene, living in New York, didn't know what a bagel was.
@@templetolleson She was joking
@@sallyversace Arlene didn't have to watch TV to be on TV.
How did Jack Klugman put up with being married to Brett Somers!
Anthony Jona not well as they were divorced by this episode and it was Jack that begged them to put Brett on the show to get her out of his hair
@@shoeshooey5464 yep . So thanks Jack. Leesa the Brett police 🚓🚨 is never far behind
They were the real odd couple.
@@garfield2439 shut up Cecilia you stalker.
@@shoeshooey5464 GROW UP!!!!! I am SO SICK of people's assumptions on here it's not even FUNNY! as if you KNEW him personally.
Gene said unicycle, but he meant UNIBAGEL.
I wonder did the celebrities come up with the responses on their own or were there writers feeding them, I want to believe that they were all that witty and clever.
So do I, but some of their answers were just so daft that I think they must have been spontaneous.

Sharron Walker looks a lot like Hilary Clinton.
I thought that too....a young Hillary Clinton....
Wow she really does😲

On one show they had a caption Shirley Williams look a-like, (I didn't think so) but this show, they should have had Hillary Clinton look a-like!
You as the panel have been told several times to go with there first thought, but no one on the panel cares.
But Gene you have kissed Richard before, why not now?????
I think Gene said a few shows back, that he wasn't kissing anyone because he had a cold.
John's wife is hot
Arlene was a nice woman, but she was inappropriate for this show. She didn't know anything about popular culture.

Actually, the contestant flubbed that Super-Match, not Brett. "Paradise" was a much better answer than "In The Night".

I LOVE Betty, but that playing with Gene's socks is so OLD it's ANNOYING!! How can she even THINK that's still funny?!
Sounds like "Strangers In The Night" ruined the Match Game writers.
Why?
