I just started playing Horizon Zero Dawn. I’ve had it for many years and just never bothered. Now I’m hooked! Everyone is right, it should’ve been on this list.
My thoughts exactly. Precious little in the way of female leads although Chloe was mentioned. HZD is often undersold for its story against its technical panache. Could easily have excised Yakuza for HZD.
World-building was excellent, but I found the story to be tired, and badly told. I feel there is no meaningful interaction with any other charakter (be that in game or through cutscene). Did not help that much was told through boring holograms with nobody really there ecept for Aloy. It was a cool idea, reminded me of The Valley of the Wind, but execution in storytelling fell on its face.

The vid is about the 10 best single player games on ps4 that contain a story. No question HZD is in that top 10 overall imo. It follows Aloy from childhood and paints a unique tale of the future with runaway AI and climate change as cautionary underpinnings.
I have played almost all of the games on the list, but I was expecting Horizon Zero Dawn to be in the top five at least. I was surprised by how impactful that story turned out to be and it is my number 2 favorite game, after The Last of Us.

HZD is mostly liked for the great world building. Its just weird because geralt is literally the biggest self-insert type character ever with how he talks in literal grunts and has little personality besides being hated for being a witcher but nobody talks about it when they mention the game lol
@PS Effect I disagree I think it's very underrated I think the story is very emotional, the themes are very deep when it comes to dealing with death and family. Plus the gameplay is very original because you not only control a person but also a ghost who tries to protect you but at the same time has its own motives. There's no other game like that. Also the acting performances are amazing

The AI of the robots is insane. I enjoyed the open world a lot as well. I sunk 120 hours into that game. One of my favourite games ever, with Last of Us, God of War and Days Gone.
@Urayis wish l I got sick of listening to all the audio and reading the notes tbh. It detracted from the flow of the game. It was silly to have huge paragraphs of text included so frequently. I'd read most of them then just say fuck it and move forward. I skim read most of it. That was my only complaint about the game.

Great games, but in both I think the stories aren’t their strong points. Spiderman isn’t exactly an original narrative and I found that the main story of what Horizon is was great but the warring factions were super forgettable.
MegaD96 // Agreed. Haven’t played Hellblade yet, but I can definitely say that Horizon is a much better game than Journey. Then again, the real travesty is the fact that Bioshock isn’t on here.
Spiderman is really fun and the story is great, however that's kind of all it is. People love it cuz it's great Spiderman game, but in terms of story, it's got a long way to go.
I liked Beyond: Two Souls but it did have a couple of lame cringeworthy scenes in the middle that felt worthy of a 5:00 kids TV special. Once you reach the native Americans it becomes phenomenal and the build up to the end is one hell of a roller coaster.
Phil Yates I agree, I would also would have preferred a linear approach to the story with just a couple of flashbacks, instead of the continuous back and forth way that they presented. But still it was a good game, not the best, but above average.
@PS Effect tbh I think beyond two souls isn't that bad the storyline is good tbf but it's just that the gameplay sometimes may seem unrealistic at some moments but need to keep in mind that the game was made back in 2013 so looking back the standard and quality of the games were lower therefore it can be an acception. I think the three quantic dream games has a very unique and amazing storyline. I am not saying that beyond two souls is the best game but it definitely isn't a bad game. After all David cage is a really good director.
I've not played all of Heavy Rain, but of what I did play, it was a good game. There's just something about it that didn't keep me hooked. Not exactly sure what it was.
@PS Effect Its actually a "I hate" or "I adore" game. For sure its not for everyone, such as those who like intense gaming controls and gameplay experience. But what I say is that the majority do not appreciate the hard work and the large sums of money spent so as to be created ( famous actors, endless outcomes and stunning graphics). Even if you don't like it you should at least respect their amazing work. That is my opinion of course.👍

It has shit reviews because when it came out there was alotttt of bugs and in some way it still feels like a rushed release and not 100% polished but despite that it's incredibly fun and I loved the story even though it was derivative. With all the patches released and bugs fixed, this game is possibly my favourite ever.

I started playing video games in the mid to late 70s when my mom brought home a pong console...and I played all thru the 80s, 90s, 2000s... Then life got in the way and I didn't play video games for almost 5 years when I randomly picked up TLOU on Dec 26/15 and I started playing it in early 2016... I fell in love with video games again and have put in thousands and thousands of hours over the past 5 years. I was lucky enough not to know anything about TLOU prior to playing it...I didn't even know how beloved it was...the case and the synopsis on the back looked interesting so I bought it on sale. As a single parent dad with 2 daughters still living at home, TLOU struck a chord. Now all 3 of us are massive gamers and we are very fortunate enough to each have our own PS5s and gaming rigs...I finally snagged the third PS5 approximately a month and a half ago for my youngest. No scalpers involved...I will never support scalpers...I just kept checking various legitimate on-line retailers everyday.
Horizon zero Dawn is by far one of the most engaging storylines it just keeps you going. You cant drop the controller wanting to know what will happen next.. and its not on this list!!
I liked horizon the game was really fun to play I found the gameplay to be very easy an enjoyable but the characters were not that great and the ending was a bit underwhelming.

Bruh I just started playing The Order 1886 this morning and hell yes, pretty cool game! For a game released in 2015 the graphics are OUTSTANDING! While many of the non combat sections can be a bit of a slog the combat is fun and exciting. And the weapons are an absolute blast! Love the main assault rifle analog. And the werewolf killing Lightening Gun. I haven't got far enough yet for anymore cool weapons but I'm sure they will be coming up soon.
I have just started replaying HZD for the umpteenth time, so to echo literally everyone in the comments WTF DUDE?!! Why is not on the list?! I usually become so engrossed in side quests and worlds that are getting bigger and bigger, that I almost always lose sight of the actual plot in most games I play, but HZD was one of the only ones that kept me engaged throughout!! I get that some players would be put off by having to *gasp* play a female character, but there is so much to love about the game!!!

When The last of us came out, I beleived that Elie was actually Ellen Page, who was the protagonist of beyond two souls and I was like how she can find so much time as to be the main character of two games, simultaneously which came out in the same year
Seldom are open world games ..... story driven. Narrative driven games are usually linear. Open world games have usually a weak main story (if any) and very slow (story) progression due to the many side quests. The most underrated story driven game is "a plague tale innocence".
Can anyone please make a list of best non open world games on PS4? I like both types, but after playing 3-4 huge open world games back to back I'm kind of bored with the countless side missions and hours of traveling and just want to play a few games which have a good story and gameplay but are not open world.
I liked it a long time ago but it wasnt interesting to me since it is very long (for me) and sometimes my saves get corrupt or lost which turns me down even more

Bought PS4 console last Friday as I've only had xbox360 and xbox1. Basically I wanted to get a VR headset as it's now in the CEX for under £100. I picked up the last of us remastered as I'd heard so much about it, and also getting used to PS4 control pad. I was gutted when to my surprise it ended last night after a week of playing it. The best storyline ever. I'm surprised your top 10 didn't include the assassins creed series, far cry series and the mafia series. 3 games I feel have brilliant storylines, and are excellent single player games. Loving your reviews and as a 56 year old gaming Nanny found it really helpful. Now I'm off to CEX to see what I can purchase after your reviews.

Knowing that people rated it so highly I kept thinking maybe I was missing a key element somehow. I'm sure I'll go back to it some day and give it another go

I liked Beyond: Two Souls but it did have a couple of lame cringeworthy scenes in the middle that felt worthy of a 5:00 kids TV special. Once you reach the native Americans it becomes phenomenal and the build up to the end is one hell of a roller coaster.
Phil Yates I agree, I would also would have preferred a linear approach to the story with just a couple of flashbacks, instead of the continuous back and forth way that they presented. But still it was a good game, not the best, but above average.
@PS Effect tbh I think beyond two souls isn't that bad the storyline is good tbf but it's just that the gameplay sometimes may seem unrealistic at some moments but need to keep in mind that the game was made back in 2013 so looking back the standard and quality of the games were lower therefore it can be an acception. I think the three quantic dream games has a very unique and amazing storyline. I am not saying that beyond two souls is the best game but it definitely isn't a bad game. After all David cage is a really good director.

@PS Effect Its actually a "I hate" or "I adore" game. For sure its not for everyone, such as those who like intense gaming controls and gameplay experience. But what I say is that the majority do not appreciate the hard work and the large sums of money spent so as to be created ( famous actors, endless outcomes and stunning graphics). Even if you don't like it you should at least respect their amazing work. That is my opinion of course.👍

@@erundorgames8941 days gone is basically a 100 hour open world the last of us. With a motorbike. It's amazing. It has shit reviews because when it came out there was alotttt of bugs and in some way it still feels like a rushed release and not 100% polished but despite that it's incredibly fun and I loved the story even though it was derivative. With all the patches released and bugs fixed, this game is possibly my favourite ever.

The last of us on the other hand , I can still play the story over & over & never get tired of it . & the online multiplayer for the last of us is soooo underrated.
The last of us made me reconsider playing single player story games. It was so good.
I started playing video games in the mid to late 70s when my mom brought home a pong console...and I played all thru the 80s, 90s, 2000s...
Then life got in the way and I didn't play video games for almost 5 years when I randomly picked up TLOU on Dec 26/15 and I started playing it in early 2016...
I fell in love with video games again and have put in thousands and thousands of hours over the past 5 years.
I was lucky enough not to know anything about TLOU prior to playing it...I didn't even know how beloved it was...the case and the synopsis on the back looked interesting so I bought it on sale.
As a single parent dad with 2 daughters still living at home, TLOU struck a chord.
Now all 3 of us are massive gamers and we are very fortunate enough to each have our own PS5s and gaming rigs...I finally snagged the third PS5 approximately a month and a half ago for my youngest.
No scalpers involved...I will never support scalpers...I just kept checking various legitimate on-line retailers everyday.
"Norman Reedus and the Funky Foetus" should have been the smash character we got
Horizon zero Dawn is by far one of the most engaging storylines it just keeps you going. You cant drop the controller wanting to know what will happen next.. and its not on this list!!

I liked horizon the game was really fun to play I found the gameplay to be very easy an enjoyable but the characters were not that great and the ending was a bit underwhelming.
Even when i know what is going to happen i can't take my eyes off the monitor

Bruh I just started playing The Order 1886 this morning and hell yes, pretty cool game! For a game released in 2015 the graphics are OUTSTANDING! While many of the non combat sections can be a bit of a slog the combat is fun and exciting. And the weapons are an absolute blast! Love the main assault rifle analog. And the werewolf killing Lightening Gun. I haven't got far enough yet for anymore cool weapons but I'm sure they will be coming up soon.

I have just started replaying HZD for the umpteenth time, so to echo literally everyone in the comments WTF DUDE?!! Why is not on the list?!
I usually become so engrossed in side quests and worlds that are getting bigger and bigger, that I almost always lose sight of the actual plot in most games I play, but HZD was one of the only ones that kept me engaged throughout!! I get that some players would be put off by having to *gasp* play a female character, but there is so much to love about the game!!!

When The last of us came out, I beleived that Elie was actually Ellen Page, who was the protagonist of beyond two souls and I was like how she can find so much time as to be the main character of two games, simultaneously which came out in the same year
Seldom are open world games ..... story driven. Narrative driven games are usually linear. Open world games have usually a weak main story (if any) and very slow (story) progression due to the many side quests. The most underrated story driven game is "a plague tale innocence".

Can anyone please make a list of best non open world games on PS4? I like both types, but after playing 3-4 huge open world games back to back I'm kind of bored with the countless side missions and hours of traveling and just want to play a few games which have a good story and gameplay but are not open world.
Failing to mention Horizon Zero Dawn on this list is just wrong. Arguably one of the best single player games in the entire PS4 library!
I liked it a long time ago but it wasnt interesting to me since it is very long (for me) and sometimes my saves get corrupt or lost which turns me down even more

Bought PS4 console last Friday as I've only had xbox360 and xbox1. Basically I wanted to get a VR headset as it's now in the CEX for under £100. I picked up the last of us remastered as I'd heard so much about it, and also getting used to PS4 control pad. I was gutted when to my surprise it ended last night after a week of playing it. The best storyline ever. I'm surprised your top 10 didn't include the assassins creed series, far cry series and the mafia series. 3 games I feel have brilliant storylines, and are excellent single player games. Loving your reviews and as a 56 year old gaming Nanny found it really helpful. Now I'm off to CEX to see what I can purchase after your reviews.

@@GPowtlaw2 it was more the mechanics which felt repetitive. For some reason I thought it was going to be like Sleeping Dogs, which it wasn't. Knowing that people rated it so highly I kept thinking maybe I was missing a key element somehow. I'm sure I'll go back to it some day and give it another go
