I want to take a moment to say thanks to everyone who has shared their one piece story here. This video wasnt exactly easy to make so I am grateful to see so many others have similar stories and how this story has effected so many of you 😁

I'm probably old enough to be your mother. Starting there just because of your opening comments about a grown man watching cartoons. If it's not hurting anyone, there's no reason to feel bad about what you like.
I caught a few episodes early on, but I had a job that didn't pay great and didn't have cable so I couldn't watch regularly.
Fast forward to 2019, I finally cave and get a streaming service - Hulu. They had One Piece. So I started over.
I spend a lot of my free time in a library when I was a kid. Hyperlexic, I read a lot and I started young. I've read Tolkien and Shakespeare and Douglas Adams and Lewis Carroll and many others and I've liked - or loved - all of them.
As far as I'm concerned, Eichiro Oda belongs on the list of great writers and storytellers. No sub category, no qualifiers, he is truly a genius storyteller.
The medium he chose is irrelevant. He is a brilliant storyteller. That's all there is to it.

That is such a well thought out and nicely put comment with many things I agree on. I only mention the age because, while it is becoming more socially acceptable to watch cartoons at any particular age, there are still many people that consider it immature and childish. (Which I personally think is wrong). So I agree with you. If it doesn't hurt anybody , who cares?
The only thing I disagree with, is that I think the medium in which you deliver your story does make a difference. There are so many ways, like manga, anime, novels, songs, paintings, and even interpretive dance, to tell a story. And I think he has found his medium and push the envelope on it. But that isn't a diminish his genius or talent. 😁

@@L4NIER2 It matters as far as choosing the medium and genre that works best with the story he's telling.
It doesn't matter as far as determining whether it's good enough to be listed with other great literature. That's the point I was failing to make.
I do hope this video gets more views, especially from those who are not quite sure they want to start this journey. I think you make some excellent points. Quite a few that resonated with me.

There's something about this goofy story that magically resonates with me in a personal level. Some quotes of stories in One Piece really helped me to get through my lowest time too. That's why this manga has a very special place in my heart.
Not to mention I love Oda's humor, especially with Luffy and Usopp. 😂

When I say much of the values, beliefs, principles, and how I treat people came from One Piece. One belief I shared to my members when I became president of an org was Sanji's quote "I'll do what you cannot do, and you do what I cannot do" and it honestly helped us conquer everything. 😀😀

Started One Piece on my first year of college. Went to their bookstore and read the chapter when they made it to Fishman Island. Then, I went home to start from the beginning. Been hooked on it ever since. I may have dropped college, but haven't dropped One Piece!

We have a very similar introduction to the series, kinda shelve it after the first couple episodes, and then DEVOUR it. I haven't gotten quite caught up (just about to finish Dressrosa), but like you, this show fundamentally changed who I am as a person.
I'm a FIRM believer in the theory that One Piece finds you when you're ready and needing it. I'm glad it found us when it did, my friend.

Turned my world view upside down and inside out. I am appreciating the little things, looking forward to the future. Feels like I am seeing the world in a clearer lens. Seeing and understanding the people around me. I can't really explain it, but I know I am a better person.

and i just want to let you know that yeah, i get it. with how it resonated to you, and how it shifted your view of people and certain stuff. i think it's a gift for us adults. a sweet little reminder of a lot of things we lost or have to regain back.

ISTG by this point I've seen maybe 10 or so youtubers who have begun reading One Piece after seeing Totally Not Mark's analyses series of the franchise, and its interesting because those youtubers will then inspire others to read the story as well, making Mark potentially one of the most influential One Piece youtubers. About the thing with the "not having an interest/hobby that you were really into" I relate to that because I was like that back then as well, my thing was not just One Piece but anime as a whole, but now its a million and one things, but that reminds me of Jaiden's Hatsune Miku video. The FOMO and kind of slight envy of seeing people be so genuinely passionate and full of fervor for one thing, one field, one industry, one sportsball team, one media franchise, a music genre, etc. and the eureka moment when you finally find the thing for you, the happiness of finally understanding what all those other fandoms were all so hyped about. I get it, and I'm so happy you found the thing for you with One Piece.

I will also say, we don't frown upon you gushing about One Piece or animes. Your takeaways from the story however "obvious" they may have seemed to you on hindsight, are completely valid imo. And we certainly don't mind the rambling, we're One Piece readers, we can endure yap sessions and 1000 chapters worth of exposition, lol. I hope you're not too hard on yourself, I thought your opinions and experiences were wonderful and I'm glad you shared them with us!
Also, also this has nothing to do with the video, but I felt sad when you were talking about your heartbreak, so when you said you were rewatching the anime with your fiancée I was so happy. I'm glad you managed to find someone new, and I'm glad you've since gotten out of that low point in your life.

I was the same I had heard people endlessly recommend it for years before I decided to try it out. I got to almost 200 episodes and wasn't really feeling it but about half a year later I decided to give it a try again and I have never been more grateful for any decision I have ever made. Truly a very impactful story and now when I see people that haven't tried it yet or say is it really that good? I understand where they are coming from and I can humbly stand knowing what they are missing out on. One Piece has a couple of hiccups that might be difficult to get through but once you do you'll never look back.

Thanks, for having the guts to talk about how you were inspired and touched by One Piece. A lot of people refrain from talking about how a fictional story helped them through hard times. I think in the next 10 or 20 years fiction and anime will be more widely accepted and socially acceptable to talk about in evert circle.

I’m only 19, I started One Piece through the Netflix adaptation, and afterwards decided to finally watch the anime, I'm halfway through the Marineford arc and wow, this series has changed my life for the better
When I started One Piece and realized the meaning behind the story Oda is telling and the themes he explores, my perspective changed. I used to think of pirates in fiction as purely evil, based on their common portrayal. However, One Piece has shown me that pirates can symbolize freedom. I see myself reflected in some my favorite characters: Luffy represents the freedom I desire. As I grow older, I sometimes feel held back by others, but watching Luffy has taught me to embrace my own freedom when the situation calls for it. I also connect with Chopper; when I first watched his backstory, I felt a deep connection with him. Although I haven't had the exact same experiences, I have faced loneliness and bullying in my past and then eventually found someone who respected me and wanted to be a lifelong friend. It's safe to say that my assumptions about One Piece when I was 15 or 16 were completely off or bare bones basic, like seeing one clip of Luffy stretching his arms on a ship and immediately assuming that's just the entire show. This series has transformed my worldview and how I approach life, especially concerning my mental health, and It has just truly helped me grow.

just wrote a whole prompt - but not sure if it's entirely kosher for here (involved sexuality/orientation acceptance) so i'll leave it elsewhere
let's just say im gonna try doing a series on here where i get my mom into the anime through the remake by WIT Studio that's on the horizon. she loved introducing me to classic disney, looney tunes & CS Lewis. i tried getting her into parasyte, jojo, beastars - but only succeeded in parasyte lol. if i pay this forward through one piece, while also learning to draw on the side with noboru koizumi's design schemes (character designer for one piece episodes 1-402, my favorite stretch of that)/HunterxHunter 1999's, hoo boy. this is basically everything i wanted for now.

I think this video is very important to hear for people who don't normally consume fiction or watch anime. These stories that the majority of people write off as goofy or childish became successful worldwide for a reason. I mean u gotta remember that for nearly 50 years comic books like Marvel and DC were looked down upon up until the 2010s with the popularity of the MCU movies. Now everyone and their mom has seen and enjoyed a Marvel movie.
