Social bias is huge. If I went back to eating animal products tomorrow, my friends and family would probably congratulate me and welcome me back to the ‘tribe’ with open arms. The hardest part of being vegan is how other people isolate you, even if you don’t even advocate or discuss veganism. People who are normally science oriented become hypocrites when talking about veganism and give higher value to anecdotal evidence rather than peer reviewed journal articles.

    • @davidhughes1825

If you went back to eating animal products again the vegan community would ostracize you especially if you were some kind of vegan influencer.Your vegan friends would no longer be your friends they would say things like u were never really vegan and that you are just selfish etc, they would also try to discredit you and tear apart your character. The vegan community treats ex vegans the same way as most religious cults do to members who leave.

@@davidhughes1825 Not really. Most vegans do have non-vegan friends and you don't see them ostracise them. Vegans are sadto see them go back to bad habits but everyone is well aware ofthe social pressure involved in following a vegan diet, so they understand

@@davidhughes1825 There is a significant difference: non-vegans dislike vegans simply for doing something not culturally normal. Just ordering a vegan option in a restaurant inevitably results in someone at my table making a snide remark. Vegans don't dislike non-vegans themselves: they dislike animal suffering, factory farms, environmental destruction and antibiotic resistance. If one of your friends started beating their partner you would have choice words for them too. Being vegan doesn't harm non-vegans, but being non-vegan harm vegans and all other humans and animals on the planet.

For years I fought nicotine addiction. I would quit tobacco for a while.....and every time that I went back to using that terrible drug I would experience a sudden drop in problems like anxiety, depression, headaches, etc. Does this mean smoking cigarettes is good for me? I don't think so. I think it is just my brain referencing past positive feeling memories associated with tobacco. Likewise, since most of us grew up carnists, we have positive associated memories of meat eating. That doesn't make good for us.

There is a diffrence between a drug and whole foods. How do they even compare?? The fact that there is so many ex vegans coming out and so much people feeling better with animal products says a lot, vegans are just so stubborn and loyal to their cult, regardless weather the animals are GMO so is plants everything is not good for us , the air the water , the pesticide sprayed vegetables and fruits. Eating grass fed beef pesticide free veggies and eliminating sugar and processed junk and refined carbohydrates have been proven by many people to be effective physically and mentally, stop relying on studies and start communicating with other individuals in your community. Understand that whether its vegans or strict carnivores know one really gives a fuck, its all for money and selling products its all a bloody scam and its so sad people give in to it.

Placebo effect in all it's glory.
Not denying a person's ailments, but I've seen it soooo many times. A close friend of mine says they're feeling weak and tired after eating too clean (NOT a well planned diet, and lacking certain micro/macro nutrients), so they talk themselves into eating cottage cheese and scrambled eggs because it's this protein/fat dense caloric overload food. Then BOOM they claim to immediately (within minutes) feel all better and have energy...when it's biologically impossible to digest and gain some form of "energy high" that quickly, especially from dense animal products like these. The brain and it's illusions have powerful effects on the body.
The problem is - People are then quick to place blame and cure labels on things they're eating instead of addressing the actual flaw in their diet.

Yes, and while that may be true, you should understand that diet in regards to an individuals health is a very subjective thing. You hate it when someone tells you that you need to eat meat to be healthy? It's the same for those of us that are really, REALLY trying to stick to the vegan diet even though it's making us feel ill.
Believe it or not, not everyone thrives on a vegan diet, no matter how much we love animals.

TheOrientalNightFish maybe you have an underlying medical condition? I have always maintained that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. If you are genuinely harming yourself on a vegan diet, it may be reasonable to add in just enough animal products to meet whatever you were missing. If I was in that position, I would consume pest animals that are culled anyway - in Australia that would be kangaroo. Even though it is possible to get everything you need (save b12) from plants, I understand that some people have malabsorption disorders etc However veganism is appropriate for the overwhelming majority of the population and at all stages of life.

One thing that I’ve thought of in regards to Maddie’s situation is the effect of the break up psychologically. I’m not a doctor or here to diagnose by any means, but this is just something that crossed my mind based on personal experience. Being with someone for 7 years, creating a life, having animals, traveling, buying a house...it’s massive. Especially during times in our lives where we are going through a lot of developmental changes. I briefly separated from my current partner of almost 6 years and it was devastating. I couldn’t imagine being in the public eye on a certain level or being expected to make content. There’s no way of knowing what kind of emotional trauma that may have either triggered the break up or occurred afterwards. And it’s very interesting to me that her and Alyse got into relationships not too soon after ending these long term ones. No judgement whatsoever. But there’s a lot that needs to be done emotionally in order to get to a place of not being so emotionally vulnerable after something like that. And I know that my emotional state has always played a huge role in my physical state. And I know when you are feeling emotionally, and/or physically, vulnerable the instinct can be to find some way to gain control over your environment again. Especially if you haven’t fully processed whatever emotions you are feeling at that time. Again, just some thoughts that I had. Loved the video Mic. The ex vegan exhale feels truly spot on.

Unlike the ex vegans of UA-cam whenever I ate it I felt queasy and I realized that it wasn't making my life easier in any way, plus I felt disconnected from my values. Eventually I went back to not eating fish. But briefly, I experienced that ex vegan exhale that Mic referenced.

I think it's all psychological. I know with me, I went vegan overnight when I saw Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar speech. I didn't give myself any time to mourn (I know it sounds crazy) my former animal diet and I also did not research the vegan diet. For a month, I lived only on salad and took in maybe 200 calories a day. One day I said "I can't do this anymore, I need meat", so I ordered myself a cheesesteak and a hoagie. I wolfed them down and I "felt better". But I really didn't, not physically or ethically. I immediately got a bout of constipation and stomach cramps and the gnawing feelin of having paid to eat a murdered being. I figured out it was because I did not transition to veganism properly by researching, shopping and preparing for this change, and yes, mourning the taste of the food I had enjoyed all my life. I went back to veganism the next day. I have felt physically better and in five monts brougt my diabetes down by 4 points and expect it to be reversed by the end of the year. It's all psychological to me.

I took his advice and completely cut dairy (previously I had it a few times a week, but was trying to limit). My periods went from 15 days a month to a normal 6-7 and the amount of bleeding became manageable again (I had a tubal, which is when these issues started). I was able to cancel my surgery and feel confident in my decision. I've had a few "bad" months where I'll have several dairy based meals and I always end up paying for it. I think many girls with EDs that have fitness and lifestyle channels used the "healthy vegan" lifestyle as an acceptable way to under eat and overexercise. Hormonal issues can be a result of an ED. Quitting veganism could be them trying to heal from the ED but to me it's more likely they are trying to switch up their diets because of their ED in order to lose more weight, also it might be very hard for them to admit having an ED if their job is selling "health and fitness" online. I feel sorry for them but also many vegan and non vegan "healthy fitness lifestyle" content creators are harming their audience by promoting an unhealthy, restrictive (vegan/nonvegan) lifestyle and we know the lifestyle they promote is unhealthy because all of them are making videos about their health issues and blaming it on veganism when in reality it's the health consequences of having an ED long term just catching up. I feel like there are several things we should rescue about Maddie's video:
    - she knows where she stands and she's not fully convinced in having gone back to animal products, it definitely sounds like hey, I was at a breaking point, I tried it and it worked, but not like she's swearing off veganism/vegetarianism forever or concluding that veganism is not sustainable.
    - she stopped posting so she would not have to 'fake' being vegan, and only opened up when she was ready to deal with the backlash and effects
    - she knows the impact of her change on others, and the vegan community as a whole, and she treated the manner with respect. I feel like sometimes veganism cannot be a 100% change, and once someone drops to a 98% commitment people are ready to 'burn the witch'.

I am vegan for the animals, and weight management is a non-issue, and am in better shape than ever. I never felt societal stress. I feel badly when people stop veganism, and blame their conditions on a plant based diet. many times I think they may not look into other factors, but just go to doctors that blame veganism or they themselves blame a pbd. I've been told my vitamin d is low, but when summer rolls around that's not the case. I've been told my iron is low, but it was like that before veganism, and I have never felt any symptoms of lowness or deficiency.

I've thought of this exact thing too and completely agree, funnily enough I commented it on one of vegetable police's videos. All of these ex-vegans always describe how they instantaneously "feel" better as opposed to providing any evidence of their health status actually improving (in cases where it might actually be impossible within the timeframe). It really signals to me how psychological bias and outside pressure may really be the thing that's making them "feel" better. It's a shame because these ex-vegans are just making the problem worse for other people because they are now essentially promoting and touting how a non-vegan lifestyle is superior thus influencing this bias on other people. It's also noteworthy that these ex-vegans when they first went vegan also claimed to have felt significantly better after doing so. So that's also interesting...

She said that she had been struggling with cramps ever since she became vegan and stopped taking birth control pills, so she assumes that it was the vegan diet that caused the cramps and not that she was no longer taking birth control pills that had been regulating her hormones. A person needs to find out what is medically wrong otherwise the problem is not going to be addressed long-term, but it’s hard to find a doctor who will help track down a problem (MDs are sometimes actually the worst in that regard). Rather than solving a health problem, the health problem can become a convenient, unassailable reason for leading a “normal” life again without having to deal with the moral choice.
BTW here’s a different anecdote, I stopped having problems with period cramps when I started eating a whole plant diet.

I went Vegan almost 4 years ago because of chest pains. I had read Dr Dean Ornish's book on heart disease prevention and reversal back in the 90s and had that much knowledge at the time.
I didn't know whole foods, plant based, oil free helped other health issues, too.
I was beyond surprised that when JUST DAYS after deciding to go Vegan, I noticed a whole laundry list of life long health issues start to simply vanish including severe body pain.
I really didn't believe it at the time, so I tested it. I ate some animal products just to SEE if animal products were the source of my health issues. And they were. The first, second and third meal with some animal products didn't bring back my health issues but the 4th meal did and the body pain came back with a vengence.
That's when I knew I could physically never go back to eating animal products and the way I had always eaten.
These UA-camrs are young and maybe they can get away with this type of eating animal products for now but it will rear it's ugly head in the form of health issues down the road. It's only a matter of time.
I'm proud to be Vegan and to have gained enough knowledge and information to be Vegan for the animals and the environment, as well as my health and pain free life!!!

Who knows, maybe she might decide to go vegan again in the future. I wonder why she went off of birth control, since it sounds like her period pains and hormone problems they weren't issues, or at least as bad, when she was on it. Obviously no prescription drugs can be cruelty-free or even may contain animal-derived ingredients - but if it's something life-saving/medically necessary (which if your period pains are landing you in the ER, but hormonal birth control can prevent that, YEAH) then by the Vegan Society's definition of veganism, it's not "practicable" to refuse it. A very perceptive video, I think. So many logical and reasonable explanations: vegans with 'issues' which tempt them to take fish and eggs would be well advised to watch it. Here in India dairy is similarly viewed though of course only 25% are vegetarian, so fish, chicken and eggs are most highly regarded here too as well as bovine milk (a lot of it from water buffaloes). And 'ex- vegan exhale' is cleverly coined.
My niece at 22 has just turned vegan, of course surrounded like I am ('surrounded' in a manner of speaking: I live and eat alone and am very reclusive, but all the family, friends, relatives, people I know and am in touch with are non vegan). However, I've also been suffering from debilitating period pains for over 6 years, with having to take ibuprofen + paracetamol + weed + hot compress + cry just to make it through the first two days - every single month. This is something I think no man could understand. If I suddenly found that fish solved that, and I could live my life pain-free, I may not be vegan anymore as well. I even joined facebook group and first thing that I noticed was that everyone write about having pain free or at least low pain and shorter periods after changing pads for cup. I've tried it and it hapened to me as well. No pain anymore and periods went from 7 days to now 3. Like wtf? Why? I have no idea.
