How to Tie Knots To Secure A Load For Transport -- KNOTS & ROPES 5 of 8

- www.askwoodman.com/ When transporting lumber or steel I use four basic knots: bowline, sheet bend, alpine butterfly and half hitch. I showed the individual knots in the previous 4 videos and in this video I put them all together. The combination of these knots bundle and pin the material securely to the trailer.
Part of the reason I often use ratchet tie downs is that the cheap popypropylene ropes that are sold in hardware stores don't have the grip or feel of classical old style ropes. But there is something fundamental about using old school techniques like this, and you've rekindled a love of rope work for me today. Thank you.
I will practice that method. The variety of ways to use ropes is really fascinating. To transform a simple line into such a useful tool with a little manipulation has always been a wonder to me. Glad you wrote again. Allan
I'm all about the alpine butterfly, but slip knot is much faster and gives you the same mechanical advantage. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing.
I am so glad you found some information of value here. I am certainly not an expert on knots. I just wanted to share these four which are so useful. A length of rope becomes a powerful tool with just a few knots. Very ancient knowledge still valid today. I like that.
My local hardware store has high quality braided rope that they sell by the foot at a very reasonable price. Often when Sue and I go hiking I put a piece of 5m rope in my pocket just in case. About 5 years ago I did a water rescue of a teenage kid using a bowline dropped out of my canoe. The dam on our lake was releasing and the water was cold and he swam for a dog toy to impress some very cute teenage girls. The look of terror on his face when he realized he was in trouble was scary.
Thanks for showing the example of use. Many knot tutorials online. Not many examples. Many times I am looking for a video like this. Thanks again.
Great videos! Thank you for making these.
I picked up 20 and 24' angle iron and tubing last week. I had a flag at the end and my standard rope tie down setup. I got the serious eyeball of my load from two different cops, but they just zoomed on by. Thank you knots :-)
The Home Depot parking lot on a Saturday morning is usually ripe with some sketchy tie down jobs for the week end project. I learned the hard way too when I was younger.
You must have been watching me. Thx
Mine is the 73 deck. I have a Tundra and that size fits just right behind with only a little stick out. I also have a pretty tight space to park it too. Mine is no super duty trailer. I think it is rated for 4700lbs. I mainly use it for awkward stuff. Steel, lumber and the ever troublesome 5x5 Baltic sheets. There is an outfit from the Houston area called TheTrailerGuys that made it. When I bought mine they had a shack in a pasture off the highway. I think I got it for $1150 4 years ago.
I love your method much more than the truckers hitch. Since i tend to mess up the loop where you put the Alpine butterfly knot and always slips on me, thanks man.
Sub'd, I like your videos. I use the Alpine Butterfly just like you, even after heavy tension, it still unties very easily. I've never been confident in the absolute security of the half shank that so many truckers swear by with the traditional truckie's hitch. I'm more concerned with absolute security rather than a slight speed advantage tying the load off. Thanks again for some great vids.
Always wanted to learn that Alpine Butterfly one. Beautiful. Thank you so much.
Great presentation. I've never used the bowline like that. Normally, I would use a clove and half hitch for that first knot. I'll try the bowline next time. The Alpine Butterfly is new to me. Thanks for the lesson.
This is great man thanks. Starting to bring a lot of wood n steel on top of my jeep and these are really useful, must get them down
Great video. I do the same thing to secure a similar load but I prefect to use a quick release becket hitch after pulling it tight against alpine. Never had one fail in a million miles.
I liked your video and subscribe, I think, more than 7 years ago. Still one of the best.
Those knots working together form a time tested tie down system that has tremendous flexibility. Thanks for watching.
Very good combination of knots in principle. You can get away with extending the 2 short length ropes with a reef knot or double fisherman (if you were just using the ropes for tying down objects) instead of the sheet bend, which tends to work better when the 2 ropes are of unequal size. A looped overhand knot or figure 8 could also substitute for anyone not knowing hot to tie the Alpine butterfly loop. Those minor points aside, that bundle up there looks really secure & i like the clear presentation.
Hey I just want to say thank you for posting this video. Good job!
Nice and secure...and most of all (for us watching) VERY CLEAR. Thank you.
wow, learning this years ago would have saved me some trouble. great stuff.
Excellent info many many thanks! ....
I've always had issue's when its come's to ropes & knots....ty!
You are on Video 5 where I demonstrate the four knots. Videos 1,2,3,4 each cover the individual knots.
Mine is a 16 and I carry 24"s all the time. I can be over the tongue safely 3' and in Texas we can legally hang over 6' with a flag. Did you notice those partitions that slip into the U channel? The tail gate and partitions are all the side pipe level. Really handy for long stock. I made the tail gate out of three pieces so it was easy to get in and out. I bought steel last week and was in and out of the yard in minutes since I took full lengths. There was a line 10 guys waiting for cuts.
Thanks for showing this tie down technique. Very effective.
Beautiful to watch.
Thanks John. These knots cover most circumstances. Allan
I learned a useful knot tying from this video. Thank You and really appreciate it.
Thank you for the video. it helped me in a pinch 👍
That tie down job looks hurricane resistant Nice job.
needed to know this for years...thanks so much.
I love this video. Thanks. I have 2 six foot aluminum handicap ramps to tie down on top of my handicap van. I need to know if the racks on my van will stand the extreme sideways pull your system puts on them. Any ideas?? Thanks and keep it up.
Now thats good info. Sill love the rachet straps. not expensive and last for a long time.
Thanks, that's badass. When I'm short a ratchetstrap, which I'm sure that time will come. This is exactly what I will use, for sure. Thanks again. Very cool.
Thanks brother. helped out a lot. been tying lots of these knots for years. much easier the way you got it down.
+Matthew Yerge You are welcome Matthew. It is always nice to be able to pull this combo of knots out in a pinch.
excellent. thx for taking the time time to do this.
Awesome video. Thank you.
Saved 🔒👏👏
Thanks so much. This is one very important video me. Having almost created a disaster when a pile of wood fell from my truck going uphill. It's quite embarrassing.
What a knotty idea ;) thanks for sharing your knot work!
Trailer is 16". I can overhang the front a comfortable 3' leaving about 5' off the back for 24'. I think the overhang limit it Texas is 6', but I not 100% sure of that. I think the police are just wanting to make sure people are not going to lose the load onto the road, so with a well secured load I have never had a problem.
That's great job ...keep it up.
Very good job man.
good job, that ain't going nowhere!
Thanks for sharing
Thank You, I will have to give this a try with out tie-downs. Great Work
Lion's Light Ratchet tie-downs are great but may not always be on hand. With these knots and a length of rope you can safely secure a load.
AskWoodMan So true, and you know I have been practicing your technique 50 times or so. Your version is not only effective but simple for beginner than the rest of videos I saw last night. Many thanks my friend :) > Again great demo
The rear overhang limit in Alabama is 5' with flag, so 16' would probably work for me. What width did you get? Most common around here is 83" deck.
How easily does the 'alpine butterfly knot' undo after being under so much tension?
very easy as its originally a climbers knot it "cracks" like opening a bowline
after being in the CG for 12 years and I'm NOT a boatswains mate, I can still tie a bowline and a sheep shank, and five others, not bad.... I use 550 para cord all the time, and people give me odd looks for securing something large, I say it is all in the knots.
Do you ever wished you had gotten a longer trailer? I'm tired of having to have sticks cut at the metal yard and looking to upgrade my 8' trailer. Leaning toward a 20' just so metal sticks won't overhang.
Thanks for the video!
+Nagarjun Roy Thanks for watching. I really enjoyed your time lapse sunrise video and you photography/videos from India. Allan
THIS VIDEO IS VERY USEFUL BECAUSE IT SHOWS THE APPLICATION OF ALL IMPORTANT KNOTS..........
Thanks James. That was what I was trying to do. Show the individual knots in the previous videos all working together.
Thank you so.......much I really learned from you , some very important thing .. great .......
Very good Video - thanks!
The great outdoors!
How long was the trailer?
I once neglected to tie down a set of metal shelves in my pickup, figuring that "all that weight" would hold em' down...oops...got up to about 45 mph and the wind resistance pulled it right up over the tailgate and out of my pickup. It was dashed to pieces by an 18 wheeler that was driving about 50 feet behind me. He wasn't too happy about the situation, but I didn't stick around to hear what he was saying. BTW, thanks for the vid.

Mind your manners on my channel or you will find yourself blocked and banned.
worked for me in my truck!
can you slow down on the alpine butterfly... I can see what youre doing....
+Miguel Angel You are on video 5 of the series where I am showing all the knots together. Earlier videos show the individual knots in detail.
+AskWoodMan Thanks you're the man! Great job!
You can control the playback speed by touching the video, hit the 3 dots in upper right hand corner to change.
Look up how to tie knots once and get swarmed with knot videos . Have some Paracord and construction line and join in , replay as often as cared then hang out at the lumber store hoping for an opportunity to amaze others as you're now a knot-head !
Hey man,can you comment the link for the other videos about rope tying ,,can't find it
Ace Cabiao yes the knot tying series is not listed in the playlist. I cant find the other videos either
ua-cam.com/play/PLEBDFE58C7EF20BC3.html
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP ME! I am trying to find out what type of knot will secure a heavy stack of wood onto a palette!
Its videos like these that construction workers need to see, its sad to see people pointlesly looping the rope and not securing anything. I see that all the time, and offten get called away from what i am doing to help out. Intead of them trying to help them selves out by learning these knots
Will it work with a Marlin spike instead of alpine butterfly?
A marlin spike is a tapered tool for loosening knots, so I don't understand your question.
Marlin spike hitch in the right direction would , I've been learning knots and hitches on u- tube for about 6 months so trust it or not any trouble the blame is yours .
Nice job! that stuff isn't going ANYWHERE! Thanks for the upload though...I learned a lot...
I just get my lumber delivered...
: )...Much easier...Or, ratchet straps are dirt cheap at Harbor freight...: )...
MAN YOU ARE THE BEST ............AWESOME .. ALL IN ONE LESSON .
Instead of using an alpine knot you could use a directional figure eight, probably easier on the rope.
No thanks.
nice
Thanks, but as a knot-tying neophyte, the camera work just didn't show things clearly enough for me. I'll check your other videos.
thank u👍😊
Плохо, что не по русски. Но всё очень наглядно и доступно!
het zal zeker niet meer wegwaaien
People who won't take the time to learn the skills and acquire the resources to properly tie down their loads are a menace to society. They have no problem rolling the dice... but betting YOUR life. I almost got killed by a ladder that flew off some idiot's truck on the freeway once. And my idiot neighbor tried to tie a kid's plastic swimming pool to his roof with STRING... flew off and caused a massive traffic jam on the freeway and damaged multiple cars.
great application for the knots, but not very good instruction for a novice with knots that does not already know how to tie them...title says " how to tie knots"....not really.
Well Jim if you learned how to read before whining you will see you are on video 5, where in the previous 4 videos all the knots are shown in individual detail then put together in this video.
It was not my intention to whine at all. But you do have a valid point. I did not read all the way through your title and just caught the "how to" part. My comment started with great application, which it is. My comment was meant to be constructive criticism, but I was wrong.
I did go back and see your instructional videos on the individual knots and they are very well done. I then took a few minutes to see lots of great content that you have put on line.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill.
Thanks Jim. Allan.
'How to tie ...'? Very clever but, from this vid, I haven't learnt how to tie anything. You demonstrate that you use knots but don't show how they're done.
I guess you have also not "learnt" how to read. You are on video 5. The individual knots that comprise this video are covered in detail in the previous 4 videos.
