I have a 2018 X1 fully loaded. I'm sorry to tell you that the engine in the X1 is the B48. It's the same engine that you find in the almost all the new BMW from the 2, 3 and the base 5 and the X1, X2, X3. Mine is 2 years old on January 25th and hasn't needed a single trip back to the dealership for a warranty issue. It is in fact the best vehicle that I've ever owned in my 40 years. I just turned 65 last week and I'm a huge car guy. I also have a modified 2012 Infiniti G37xS Coupe (Red) with 87k kms and never winter driven. I have also kept the 18" wheels for winter and have 19" Niche aftermarket wheels with larger tires: 245/40 performance summer. I've had a professional programmer add software options to the car and tuned the engine to higher output. I've also added things like a new rear view mirror with homelike, a box under the armrest that looks OEM to cover the empty space there, LED Fogs, the car came with LED lights front and back and my programmer added quite a few software options. I also added LED door lights to illuminate the logo on the ground. I have the optional adjustable dampers and larger screen. Not sure if you knew this but Canada gets the thicker glass for the quieter ride on the highway not available in the US model. My wife and I are very satisfied with this vehicle. We each have our pocket key Fob customized to our preferred settings which includes seating and infotainment system. 40 presets each with a mix and match combo of AM, FM and Satellite stations which we saved on the 1st of 8 preset custom buttons to easily access them. I don't mind that the dash guages aren't fully digital. I prefer the cool analog gauges as they're electroluminescent like in the M2 and I have a very cool HUD display. I would say that with the better wheels, tires and power it's more like a hot hatch! So many cool features. Some BMW owners would like to think that the X1 is a watered down BMW but that's far from the truth today. Maybe a few years ago but not now. The new X1 is the same size as the old X3. Mine is Metallic white and I plan on adding BMW pin stripes along the character lines this spring. I'm looking forward to the newer one in a few years. Hi, that’s all good, we also went for these in the past because of the great drive. Yes, if you want one, stay away from V8s and my recommendation for new ones is the 40 series which is the turbo inline 6 called the B58 or the slightly older 36 series which is the n55 also reasonable to own. Diesels are great, when they are good, but when they start letting go, the emissions will bankrupt a person.

Look everyone. All you half to do is change that oil often. NOT 25,000km once per year. BUT every 7,000km. Then the inside doesn’t get sludge. I put 400-500,000km on all my BMWS. 22 years never had the dealer or any garage fix my BMWs. I do the work myself
I change my oil every 1500-2000 miles. That didn't stop my 135i's VANOS bolts from shearing and migrating into the oil pan, or the starter starting an electrical fire, or the two clutch failures, or the boost leaks and charge pipe failures, or the tin and plastic FMIC fail, or the rusted-though rear ignition coils, or the convertible top failure and 15-20 fabric leaks, or the pleather seat failures, or the full dash delamination, or all the flatscreens melting, or the DSC stability system failure, or 3 of 4 M wheels developing 3-5 inch cracks, or the lethal airbag issue, or the massive oil leaks gushing all over the VANOs solenoids and out the rear main seal and pan all over cardboard bottom cladding, and the serpentine belt, or the 3 vacuum leaks. I'm forgetting 90% of these putrid dogshit "cars" created by utterly incompetent fools.
@@FFE-js2zp Sorry to hear 👂 your bad luck. My first E36 (1996 328i) with M54 engine. 480,000km. Just did maintenance, valve cover gasket, alternator. Then a 2006 E90 (330i) with N52 220,000km. Just tune up. Then a E83 (X3) with N52N engine. Just maintenance 380,000km, I use it everyday and performs like and looks brand new. I’m a machinist/hobby mechanic, I have a big garage with a lift. All my vehicles get Krown every year. Detailed by me twice a year with ceramic coat. My only concern with BMWs is that the new ones are starting to require programming for regular parts requiring ISTA. O by the way changing water pump and thermostat, serpentine belt, hoses to me are just maintenance items. No big deal.
@@FFE-js2zp I tend to agree. I watched a BMW documentary a while back and they interviewed an executive who said “We don’t want the car to come back, we want the customer to come back”. That means they don’t want what was going on in the late 80s or mid 1990 where cars like Volvo, bmw, Mercedes were lasting past 10 years ((I have a friend who bought a Volvo in those years, the dealer said his 960 (I think that was his model) was a “17 years car”.)) They want to sell you a new car every 3-5 years. They (all automakers) say that life expectancy of a vehicle is 160,000km or 100,000 miles. So for me, all those plastic cooling system parts, I know there designed to fail at 160,000km, I just view them as consumables parts and just change them all. I use to shop from Bavarian Autosport (they went bankrupt after 35 years) now I shop at Rock Auto or get parts at dealer. Never Amazon/eBay, too many fakes.
I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on a certified 2017 or 2018 X1. While I totally understand the BMW cost of ownership, after owning certified SAABs and Volvos off warranty I don't see any disasters. Just have to stay up on maintenance.
I had a 2008 328xi that had no issues until the vcg leak and the dealer said my oil pan gasket had a leak, but I never saw the leak myself. That was at 80k miles. Other than that, the car was great.
I currentlydrive a 2020 X5M with the 3.0 litre turbo diesel. This is my 4th X5 and by far the best. I've had X5's since 2001 and apart from the 4.4 litre petrol, they've all been diesels. Never had a drama apart from standard servicing and my last X5 purchased in 2013 was traded in with 250,000 miles with few if any hassles. Good driving, good servicing and a quality car in combination will make for longevity. My friends with the GL and ML series Mercs on the other hand have had no end of problems.
Damn shame you can't get a diesel in the U.S. now. I have an x5 35d with over 130k mi on it & have no plans to replace it any time soon. Had the harmonic balancer go out a few months ago (which wasn't cheap to replace) but compared to a new car payment I'll take an occasional repair bill. Interested in potentially moving to a Cayenne at some point down the road but for now I LOVE this xDrive 35d..... As you know it's a performance tank (fun to drive SUV).
@@ECPP Have you heard the newer Merc v-6's are having issues with the #1 cylinders burning down? Step son is a service writer for a Merc dealer & was telling me over the weekend. Apparently Merc is blaming North American fuel for the culprit rather than any design or manufacturing flaws.

I wish you would have spent alittle more time talking about the X7. Could you make a video about BMW X7 to buy or not to buy...thx....very helpful watching your videos
You talk about the “open deck” design and “closed deck” design. What’s that mean? I have a 2011 35i. Have noticed a coolant leak. What else am I supposed to prepare myself for? The x5 has about 140,000 miles on it. Runs really good. Not sure if I have the N54 motor or N55???
Yes, the B58 is their best engine so far. The newer gen's of that engine have been improved as mentioned in the video. First gen were pretty solid too but later is better. Overall least problematic and fairly tolerant of mods, as per the Supra upgrades.
I just don't get that you are talking about X1 20i has N20 engine. From what I know, X1 20i has always B48 engine.. Is it different in Europe and different in US? Because that's really strange. In our market there are 3 petrol engines available 1.5i three cylinder B38, 20i four cylinder B48 engine, and also 28i which is B48 with more power.
I don't understand why overpriced BMWs for years suffer from the same reliability issues. Why can they just make them more reliable. My own conclusion is that they are still making a profit with these junkies and unless sales start dropping they won't do anything about it.
Great videos. I learn a lot from your content daily. I’m looking for a low mileage used suv something German and cannot decide what to get. I would like something luxurious but still easy on the pockets in terms of maintenance. What would be my best options. Can you please help
I took the time to watch your entire video and you really need to be better informed. You started off talking about the f48 x1. Your obviously not aware of what engine comes in this model because the majority of what you said was untrue. Then through the X5s you kept showing different generations but spoke of them as they are all the same. Each generation had different engines even different ones within the same generation. Please stop speaking as your some sort of specialist when it's clear that you are ignorant to many factors of BMW engineering, models and engines. If you don't like BMW's or any other brands stick to making opinion videos but do not profess to know what you are talking about because it is far from factual
I agree with this comment ... Scott wants to sound like an expert , but he does lack the basic understanding of the different generations and engine choices . I have a 2018 X2 s Drive 28i has the 228 bhp B48 engine .
Mark, I contacted BMW regarding the B48 needle roller bearings in the counter balance shafts that you discussed in your last video. I was told that indeed this problem occurred in about 240 engines built in the USA and Canada between 2019 - 2020. Is it possible that you are overstating this problem? Of course BMW could be understating the problem. I have a 2018 X3 with the B48. Do you know if anyone has had their B48 self-destruct or been contacted by BMW under a silent recall? I enjoy your honest reviews.
Sorry but sounding like you know what your talking about and actually speaking facts are 2 very different things. Some truths thrown in with mostly speculation doesn't make him any type of expert
People need to understand that your experience with a car can differ to someone else. S58 is still fairly new so whatever the complaint is that someone may have would be addressed by the warranty. People need to honestly stop believing they're going to buy a premium brand vehicle and have the maintenance cost of a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Be realistic the engineering is night and day
They are fairly mixed but stay away from the twin turbo V8s and diesels have good engines if you are prepared to do a delete. Straight 6 is best especially latest 40 series B58
I just think you have to be very lucky, I had a 2006 320i, many people told it was very unreliable, I drove that car for many year without any problems, was it me or the car.
See exactly my point , perfect example of it doesn't apply to everyone. Also I love how he left out the fact that majority of "problem" cars are due to neglect
hi can you tell me you're touth's please im planing to buy a bmw x1 2011model with xdrive20d twin power turbo engine and has 120k miles on it, timing chain has been replaced already . ? thanks 🙏

I have a 1998 Honda civic coupe. I want to update to a BMW 1 series, X3 or 3 series made between 2000 to 2006 but am afraid. Which should I get in terms of reliability and quality ride
Its hard to answer that question because #1. The models your looking at are older so their reliability strongly is based on if they were even maintained properly. #2 your coming from a 98 civic, totally different type of vehicle. Question for you would be what are your expectations and what's your purchase + maintenance budget?
I'm on my 2nd EV, this video reinforces why I swapped, not only the cost savings on fuel (with my solar), but all these issues are ridiculous in this day and age. Why aren't all ICE cars bullet proof by now? Only concern I have is the battery degradation, most batteries with a thermal management system can last 200k+ miles with 70% charge. I can't wait till MB/BMW bring more EV varieties, no more timing chain, injector, coolant and other issues in the 21st century lol. I miss my BMWs but I'm over their below-average reliability.
You live in a cold climate. I live in Southern California. How does a harsh climate affect owning a luxury car? How does this factor into your thinking about exotic/luxury vehicles?
As long as you warm up your car and keep the RPMs below 4,000 for the first 25 minutes it’s just like anywhere else. That and making sure to wash your car often during the winter to keep all the crap that they put on the roads off the car which can eat away at the undercarriage of the vehicle.
@@freddyebong for me the main thing was the reliability. I really did like the x4. It just came down to what would be something I knew I could put some miles on. Zero issues so far, my mom has had her lexus for 10+ years so that aided in my decision.
Hey there, isn't it funny and odd how this guy responds to viewers who just say hi, or stay warm, or basic bs questions but when a viewer like you asks a legit question you get no posted response.. and its obvious he read your post, (these guys don't realize it takes 2mins to hack this info from their channels) and the fact is they give selective responses.. The facts of the automobile industry are this: ANY AND ALL AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS HAVE HAD RECALLS AND ISSUES WITH RELIABILITY AND MOTORS. SOME HAVE HAD MORE, SOME HAVE HAD LESS.. ANY BRANDS ISSUES CAN BE COMPARED TO ANY OTHERS AND MADE TO LOOK BETTER OR WORSE THAN THE OTHERS AND THATS JUST WHAT THIS GUY DOES... PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

Not the new ones. The BMW engineers learnt a lot from working with the Toyota engineers while co-developing the engine for the New Toyota Supra and BMW Z4. The new 4 cylinder engine will be an option this year along with the 6 cylinder. It's the B48.
hard to believe that maintenance can cost nearly as much as putting down 20,000+ for a three year rental. leasing is the most expensive way to own a car
Why are we talking about oil and coolant leaks on $40,000-$60,000 cars with 60,000-70,000 miles!? Is it THAT common!? Holy Shit I'm looking at a 2011 X3 i35 whatever with all 4 packages and every option v6 dual turbo, etc. 60k miles, 2 owners (2 years & 9 years). Am I about to spend $14K AND have all these problems!? I think I may be better off with a honda.
Great Vid! The old E53 X5 3.0 diesel with the 6 speed auto can be a great daily too. That’s only if you want an SUV that’s 15+ years old. ‘99-‘06 They have their issues, but definitely not as bad as the 3.0 petrol with the 5 speed auto. There are many more horror stories with the petrol model. I think they made a manual for the E53 too. I got this info from BMW Doctor.
P.S. I mentioned in another video about how my mid-size Toyota/Nissan sedan rental was upgraded for free to a BMW X7 i40. That single-turbo V6 was pretty amazing with a combination of power and smoothness, and if I were to try to upgrade my current Toyota Avalon Hybrid to an SUV, I might still look at an X5/X7 i40 (the X5 would be more my size) and stick with the turbo six. Twin turbos such as the i50 and the Lincoln MKX/Nautilus with the twiin-turbo V6 means twice as much that can go wrong, and I would rarely need the kind of power the V8 would provide. (That MKX was a hoot to drive from a standing stop at a traffic light, but then I think about potential repairs... I remember turbos that started rolling out in the 1980s that frequently had coking issues.)
BMW not reliable? Must be the cars build in America. Here in Europe where we have real German build BMW’s There are no reliability issues. BMW is a top quality brand. American brands should be avoided by the way. Poorly build and cheap.

@@Paul37Ontario
Older BMWs were durable if not reliable. Modern BMWs are outright fraud.
The new BMW engines B48 or whatever it is and B58 are said to be reliable… ofc the older ones are bad
I agree they are great
@@ECPP Have you heard the newer Merc v-6's are having issues with the #1 cylinders burning down? Step son is a service writer for a Merc dealer & was telling me over the weekend. Apparently Merc is blaming North American fuel for the culprit rather than any design or manufacturing flaws.

I’ll take that n55 any day..great vid
N55 is a good engine. Makes great sound even when turbocharged

I wish you would have spent alittle more time talking about the X7. Could you make a video about BMW X7 to buy or not to buy...thx....very helpful watching your videos
Very informative. Thanks

N55
I thought the B58 was supposed to be reliable! That’s why I went for the 340i 😤
Yes, the B58 is their best engine so far. The newer gen's of that engine have been improved as mentioned in the video. First gen were pretty solid too but later is better. Overall least problematic and fairly tolerant of mods, as per the Supra upgrades.
is the newer 2022 x4 reliable? Liked and subscribed!
So far it looks like the latest Inline 4 called the b48 seems to be an improvement from previous engines such as the n20. Time will tell.

Hey Mark happy Thanksgiving. I've a question is bmw x5m 2017 o 2018 reliable?
I just don't get that you are talking about X1 20i has N20 engine. From what I know, X1 20i has always B48 engine.. Is it different in Europe and different in US? Because that's really strange. In our market there are 3 petrol engines available 1.5i three cylinder B38, 20i four cylinder B48 engine, and also 28i which is B48 with more power.
Thanks for watching
@@ECPP I expected an answer, not just random reply..
Lmao damn
Mark, I contacted BMW regarding the B48 needle roller bearings in the counter balance shafts that you discussed in your last video. I was told that indeed this problem occurred in about 240 engines built in the USA and Canada between 2019 - 2020. Is it possible that you are overstating this problem? Of course BMW could be understating the problem. I have a 2018 X3 with the B48. Do you know if anyone has had their B48 self-destruct or been contacted by BMW under a silent recall? I enjoy your honest reviews.
I would not believe a single word those crooks say.
@@elzorro8787 I fully understand....thanks

Your videos are awesome - Very informative. I should come to you when I finally make enough money to buy an X5

Sorry but sounding like you know what your talking about and actually speaking facts are 2 very different things. Some truths thrown in with mostly speculation doesn't make him any type of expert
What’s the update on the x4’s balance shaft bearing where the engine can start coming apart?
The b48 engine ?
@@ECPP yes
Have you done a review on the i3 (2021)? Did I make a mistake for committing to a 2 year lease.
Not really but it has made lists
What do you think about the sDrive18i found in the new x1? I’m looking to buying one
Great video curious have you heard any bad news or complaints about the S58 engine platform?
People need to understand that your experience with a car can differ to someone else. S58 is still fairly new so whatever the complaint is that someone may have would be addressed by the warranty. People need to honestly stop believing they're going to buy a premium brand vehicle and have the maintenance cost of a Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic. Be realistic the engineering is night and day
Hmm, between the BMW and the Mercedes Benz, which is best for reliability and which is your favourite?
Take care and don't let the Bug Bite!
What years of the X5 and models have best reliability long term? Like the SUV but want a good one.
They are fairly mixed but stay away from the twin turbo V8s and diesels have good engines if you are prepared to do a delete. Straight 6 is best especially latest 40 series B58
@@ECPP thanks! Yeah those turbo V8 cost more to buy as well so the six cylinder better as you mentioned.

What of X6 ?any problems?
Can you please talk about the old 2006 bmw Touring 5 series

You live in a cold climate. I live in Southern California. How does a harsh climate affect owning a luxury car?
How does this factor into your thinking about exotic/luxury vehicles?
As long as you warm up your car and keep the RPMs below 4,000 for the first 25 minutes it’s just like anywhere else. That and making sure to wash your car often during the winter to keep all the crap that they put on the roads off the car which can eat away at the undercarriage of the vehicle.
Do you consider catalytic converter theft and car breaks in as as part of our climate?

The facts of the automobile industry are this:
ANY AND ALL AUTOMOBILE MANUFACTURERS HAVE HAD RECALLS AND ISSUES WITH RELIABILITY AND MOTORS.
