A lot of your experience will likely be determined by the university's reputation and the type of degree you get. I did STEM so I didn't have to deal with too much political drama, most of that came from my Arts and Humanities courses, but they were still fun. Also, like pissbreakchatsupervisor said, you hear about these issues as they are always in the media, but it is definitely not the norm. You should have a good time, just stay focused and study.
