It seems like you either hate Behringer or love them. Below are links to each device. I needed to replace my MOTU HD192 and my budget was $500. The combination of the Behringer UMC1820 and ADA8200 for 16 mic/line inputs was too tempting to not at least try out! The 2 pieces together came in at just under $500*! This video shows how both systems compare for recording 8 channels of drums.
*The price has increased since I made this video. Now it would be roughly $630 for both.

What we complain about and call "Trash" today makes the top end gear from hardly 10 years ago look like garbage.
Our "low end"gear today is still really powerful and higher quality than we are willing to admit on our Sound Forums online.

Yes, there's a certain level of snobery that goes with so called "high-end" gear, most of it unjustified. But hey, if somebody got thousands of dollars to throw at audio gear, go for it! I don't...😐
The UMC1820 has surpassed all my expectations in sound quality and dependability... One of the rare big bangs for the buck...
Do you use it for kontakt libraries and vst synths?

Thanks for your thorough review of UMC1820 / ADA8200 system. I've been using other Behringer stuff (mixers, bass cabinets, mikes) for a while and I'm truly impressed by their performance to price ratio. The UMC1820 / ADA8200 pair seems to be no exception and I'm likely to go for it now. BTW, I have a lovely black dog, Orion, very similar to yours ;) Cheers from Poland!
I have to say its been several years now, and the UMC1820/ADA8200 combo has performed flawlessly thusfar. Behringer has come a long way! Give Orion a hug for me. :)
Nice video! I would personally take the HD192, because the converters are better quality (wider stereo image), but the behringers are very good, especially for the price.
I already have a UMU 2i2 Interface and I was planning to increase my channels for the kit. Thanks to your video I will go ahead and upgrade to the full fat Behringer racks. I may need to double that maybe due to the size of kit. Nice kit. Subbed.

Behringer felt like it had more transient detail, but was a bit more harsh on the cymbals/hat. I have a modded ADA8200 I haven't hooked up yet I look forward to trying it out! Need to get an adat cable first

I recently purchased the 1820 and love it!! Soo much better value than the focusrites! I think youre paying for the brand name of the focusrites than the tech. Midas preamps are far superior IMO! Looking at adding the ADA right now. Thanks for the review!

@@fenderg33k Not really too familiar with Cloud products. All I can tell you is I've recorded drums, bass, and guitar via the ADA cleanly, and the gitar was through a mic'd amp......the noise floor is barely audible. However I don't think the ADA can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of a low output mic....but I could be wrong. That question should maybe be put to Behringer.

From what I know I think u need a adat cable. Connect one side to ur adat out of ur ada8200 and the other to ur adat in of the umc1820.
Eh. That Behringer combo had a lot better low-end dynamics and the overall soundspace was better too. At a fraction of the cost.
We're talking about 2 setups whose differences in terms of specs are not even within the realm of human hearing, if we're talking single channels. Keep in mind that every device that converts from analog to digital adds latency, even when using direct or "zero latency" monitoring. The ADA8200 adds around 0.5ms of latency. I'm not sure what the latency specs are on the UMC1820, but you can safely assume they're different from the 8200. When mixing multiple correlated signals (ie. multiple mics on a single source like a drum kit), even a single sample of delay can cause audible changes in frequency response. If you had some of your kit mics plugged into the ADA8000 and some into the UMC1820, there's every reason to assume that the latency of the converters in the 2 units were different and that would have manifested itself in phase differences (in comparison to having them all plugged into a single HD192 unit) that affected frequency response. If you really want to compare the two units and remove those phase differences from the equation, I suggest using a phase correlation plugin like Sound Radix Auto-Align or Waves InPhase to adjust the timing of the signals to maximize the correlation between the signals. Changes in frequency response as a result of phase differences between correlated signals will be far more into the audible range than the minute differences in frequency response between single channels of any of these devices.

@@joelonsdale Absolutely. You can't reasonably provide a 16-channel-interface, that induces 2 types of latency. The 8200 is a 8xpre/AD/DA converter, not more. The same pres/converters are in the UMC1820 both are clock synced and then sent over the USB-soundcard/interface. There could be 2 ways to sync, with the 8200 as master clock or with the1820 as clock master device. Optimally, plug your "more essential" mics in the clock master device. The clocking of a second device always induces a jitter, no matter what PLL is used, and therefore is more or less compromised in sound quality. There is no way around that if you use more than one AD unit, generally.... In practice, the difference is minimal/unhearable if you have the same kind of converters. Those with bat ears might think differently....

This was a very good video, thank you. I am in the market for the 1820 and didn't even know that I can easily expand it with the 8200. I quit drumming and turned towards synthesizers in recent months and it escalated quickly, 2 or 4 channel interfaces are not sufficient anymore. I bought a Xenyx 2222USB mixer instead of the 1820, but the sound quality via USB is terribly bad, so I can use it without PC for all the hardware, (the overall sound is great, just not via USB) but need a good sounding usb interface on top if I want to work in the DAW. I wish I had known how bad the xenyx sound via USB really was, I would have gone for the 1820 first and added the mixer for dawless jams later on. well, another two months and I should be able to afford it... bummer.
I wasn't even aware of the Xenyx mixers by Behringer. A quick search revealed that they seem to be getting really good reviews on different websites. While I know one should take online reviews with a grain of salt, given the volume of positive reviews I'm compelled to ask; are you sure you've done everything correctly in terms of installation, etc.? I don't in any way mean to seem condescending either....but having gotten disappointing results with new gear many times myself only to discover I did something wrong, I know how that goes. :) Anyway, glad you found the video useful!

here there be dragons: Behringer does not offer a driver anymore since win 10, their link goes to the asio driver. once it is installed, everything should work. it doesn't. no matter which DAW, the usb interface of the mixer does not show up under devices.

but the main problem is really the bad sound quality (only via usb, as I said) the mixer on it's own sounds brillant. Seems I need the 1820 for real usb connectivity, or I go for a livetrak from zoom (has even multichannel and not only master via usb, much better for working in a DAW, but it's almost 500 AGAIN
@@couchcamperTM Wow how frustrating! I hope the 1820 does better by you. All I did was connect it, Logic Pro X saw it and I was off to the races. but I'm on a Mac so there were no drivers needed.

Behringer makes some very decent gear for people on a budget. Will it last as long as a "better" brand, maybe not... but it will get you to where you need to go and might take a while before it breaks down. I remember returning two Presonus unit with issues, third was a charm.
My UMC202HD still holds strong after 4 years now. The only problem it has it the volume knob makes a bit of noise while using it. I put some WD40 but it starts after a while. Just a minor thing, no big deal

What people don't realize is that Behringer bought out Midas a few years back. They really stepped up their game ever since because all the newer mixers and audio interfaces are using Midas preamps. Sure they will continue to make cheap music gear for the average consumer, but people need to stop thinking that's all they do. They started making pro mixing boards like the x32 that alot of venues are now using for live settings and it's really high-tech well built stuff (3000$). Ok, maybe their audio interfaces exterior build quality is a bit less solid than a focusrite or other more expensive units, but in a studio environment where it will stay in a rack, who cares...In a mixed track, I bet that an audio engineer won't be able to notice a difference between higher end interfaces sound and the Behringer. Now a days, the quality between low budget and high end is so minimal!
AGREED! Behringer is no longer the company that makes cheap audio crap. The x32 is a killer board that I’ve seen in several venues I’ve played in, and the sound guys RAVE about it! All I can say is I am really impressed with the results I'm getting with the UMC1820 and ADA8200 combo. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for your well-done efforts! I subscribed. I'm one of those folks who's had and still have several pieces of Behringer gear over the years. When they get it right, they're stuff sounds great, can be built to last, and they usually manage offer feature sets only found on far more expensive gear, all at bargain prices.
I sometimes wonder how Behringer has been able to deliver such good quality at such a low price!

Great video, But I have a question. It seems to me that this video does not really show the capabilities of the preamps in the Behringer gear. Because you use your different external preamps between the mics and interfaces, you would connect them with line in on the two behringer units? Which would mean that the preamps on the Behringers are actually not engaged. For me it would maybe be even more exciting to see the result with your Mics connected directly into the Behringers. Please correct me if Im missing something :)
So you make a good point, and I did think about that. But first, you literally can't bypass the Behringer preamps, so the output from my preamps goes to the input of the Behringer preamps. What you are asking is, what would the drums )or whatever) sound like if all of the drum mics went directly to the Behringer pre's. That's a totally valid question, and definitely deserves another video demonstrating just that. I will do one at some point. Thanks for your comments!
Behringer sounds great, I'm really tempted to pick one up. The only thing stopping me though is I can't figure out if the headphone outputs are independent or if they're tied. I'd like to be able to route custom mixes for each. I don't suppose you know if this is possible do you?
The Behringer 1820 has 2 1/4” stereo output jacks, each with a button that allows you to monitor the outputs from either 1&2 or 3&4 separately. So yes, you can send different mixes to each headphone output. It also has 8 1/4” mono outputs on the back. I use outputs 1&2 for my main output, 3&4 and 5&6 are sent to 2 different headphone amps. This configuration allows me to create 3 completely separate mixes; 1 main, and 2 cue mixes. I hope that helps!

Yeah, Audient gets pricey quick lol. I have an ID4 and it’s great. I’m looking at the behringer to mic a drum kit though so 1 mic pre isn’t going to cut it.

From what I understand of your question, you're after plugging in hardware synths into the 1820 and you're wondering if it outputs the individual tracks through the USB - am I correct in assuming that? If so, that is completely the case and can be achieved through the use of your preferred DAW.
Thank you for your honest review :) It was very informative. The audio demos were very useful to me. I'm interested in buying and audio preamplifier to extend my audio interface via ADAT. I'm also curios how does Behringer's ADA8200 compares in terms of sound with Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre / Focusrite Clarett OctoPre / Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic. Does it really worth to buy Focusrite instead of Behringer (the question is also addressed to all readers) ? I play guitar and in my case I know that 99% from the quality of the recording is the actual performance. I need this preamp for my drummer. Thank you again for your video :)
I haven't used the Focusrite stuff, Scarlett or otherwise, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think today's tech is SOOOO much better than in previous years, and I am very happy with the ADA 8200......actually amazed it sounds so good! That would be my recommendation as you can't beat the price. I have no doubt the Focusrite gear is also great!

I'm asking you because I want to use them with a reel to reel machine and I don't know how much noise there is on the output section. @@valentin80 I have the ADA8200 connected via ADAT to the Behringer 1820, so no, I have not tested the outputs on the individual channels of the ADA8200. I CAN tell you that the 1820 outputs are virtually noise-free.

Hello, Im starting a personal project and...I want to record my drum set (2 kicks, snare, 4 tom toms, 2 floor toms) and Im planning to use 11 mics (9 dynamic for drums, 2 condenser mic for the overheads). My question is if I connect Behringer UMC1820 to Behringer Ada8200 Im gonna have 16 independent channels in my DAW? Other question is If there's a way to control phantom power independently on the UMC1820? If you have a suggestion to me I'll be glad to hear it. Thank you very much for reading me! :)
To your 1st question; yes you will have 16 independent channels with the UMC1820/ADA8200 combo. As to the 2nd question, the UMC 1820 allows for controlling 48v phantom power for channels 1-4 and channels 5-8 separately. Each channel grouping (1- 4 & 5 - 8) has an on/off switch for phantom power. So you can have phantom power engaged on channels 1-4 but not 5-8, for example. There is no way to control each channel individually. However, you can connect a mic that doesn't require phantom power into an input that has phantom power engaged. In my case, all of my drum mics are going through mic pre's, so I handle phantom power at that stage individually. No need to engage phantom power on either the UMC1820 or the ADA8200. I hope that helps!
How did you change the clock settings in pro tools?!... I’m having an issue with that, when i had my 003 it was in settings in the box to the left, now that i have this interface i don’t see it
OK so I don't use ProTools, I use Logic Pro X which is Mac only. If you're in Windows, I'm pretty sure you need to install the Behringer audio driver. You didn't mention what interface you're referring to....the UMC1820? For me, it was as simple as connecting the UMC1820 via a USB cable and launching Logic, which automatically saw the UMC1820. From that point, all I had to do was set up input channels. If you're referring to hooking up an ADA8200 to the UMC1820, all I did was connect an ADAT cable from the ADA8200 OUT to the UMC1820 IN, and set the SYNC to MASTER 44.1K. Does that help at all?
Is there a way to monitor the inputs of the ADA8200 through the Umc1820 without a DAW? (Like using the hardware as a mixer without a computer.)
That's an interesting question! It never occurred to me to use the ADA8200 and the UMC1820 that way. I mean, they seem to be specifically designed to work together with a DAW. Maybe the Behringer SD8 or SD16 is more suited to what you're looking for?
I bought the exact same set up recently, Umc1820 and the ADA8200. I’ve connected them in the back via an optical cable from the out of the ADA8200 to the UMC1820s in with the ADA as the master set at 44.1 hz. So, I can see all of them as inputs in logic, I can see I’m getting signal on both units, but the ADA8200 has no sound whatsoever in Logic. Any tips?
Maybe try a different optical cable?

Exactly. I can't remember exactly what I paid for my 1820, but I know it was just north of $200....so I bought 2, one for backup. The 2nd unit sits unused to this day. I noticed that a new 1820 gies for $299 now....still a bargain in my book!

Well I doubt you're the only one! :) However, I'll stick with my original conclusion as I sat here listening through my Tannoy studio speakers, not UA-cam. :) The MOTU system is MUCH older, and technology has gotten better and cheaper all at once. Lastly, I have been recording/mixing with the Behringer gear now for several months, and I don't miss the MOTU stuff at all. Thanks for your input!
I’m listening on my phone which has its pros and cons. The Behringer has more ring to it, and the Motu sounded warmer. I preferred the Motu but will probably buy a Behringer :D

Hi there. thanks for the video, We have quite similar set ups. I have the same problem as one of the other comments. I have the 1820 and the 8200 ( I got the 8200 so I can leave the drums mics set up). But... I cant get any monitor output from the 8200. I use Reaper DAW. I wondered if you had any new suggestions. I will also try Reaper forum and Behringer support and if I get a solution I'll post it here. BTW it's quite uncanny how similar our set ups are.
You didn't mention if/how you have the ADA8200 and the 1820 connected. I am able to monitor all 16 channels, so here's my setup. I have an ADAT cable connected from the ADAT OUT of the ADA8200 to the ADAT IN on the 1820. I use Logic, but I suspect the setup in Reaper would be very similar. So let's say you have eight drum mics connected to the ADA8200, and other stuff connected to inputs on the 1820, and you want to monitor all of that. First I create an auxiliary channel in Logic to receive on, and set the INPUT to whatever BUS I'll be sending monitor signals over. Let's say BUS 1 for example. I then assign each track that I want to monitor to send over that same BUS. So each track's main output would be to Stereo L&R, and also each track has a BUS 1 OUTPUT sending to the above mentioned AUX channel, which is receiving on BUS 1. Each track should have a volume controller for BUS 1, totally independent of the main slider for that track. I can adjust each track's BUS 1 SEND level via each volume controller. Thus I have a mix going to the AUX channel that is completely separate from the MAIN mix. I hope this description sheds some light on your problem! Thanks for the comment.
@@thecreativedrummer5546 thank you for your reply. I got quite frustrated on Friday night that I gave up and had a fresh look on Saturday. I started at source. My Stage box which I wired myself. I should make an appointment to have the donkey ears surgically removed from my head. The problem was me. I totally wrongly labeled the snake stage box that I had wired. ie.lead 1 to socket 7, 2 to 6 and so on.
So, no wonder I could not hear much. So sorry to have troubled you with my daftness. It all works perfectly.

I have no direct experience with any Tasca audio interfaces so can’t comment as to how the Behringer 1820 compares. I’m sure the Tascam stuff is good as they are a legit company.

What sample rate did you use on the HD192? Max on the ADA8200 is 48 kHz while the MOTU can go up to 192 kHz. Apples to apples would be 48 (or 44.1) on both, but that wouldn't be fair to the MOTU since it can go up to 192. I think 96 kHz is probably the most popular sample rate so I'd love to hear 96 on the MOTU versus 48 on the Behringer (I realize the UMC1820 can do 96 kHz but when paired with ADA8200 it would be limited by the 48 kHz max of the ADA8200).
I recorded everything at 44.1kHz. The human ear cannot hear anything above 20kHz. This is well-established by research in the field of audiology (www.audiologyresearch.org/human-hearing-range - see citations at the end of the article for sources). That diminishes further as we age, so by 30 yrs we can only hear around 16kHz on average. No one would hear a difference between 44.1kHz and 192kHz.
IO just started getting into this last x-mas....Behringer seems to be the ones to go to. They seem to offer more for less. I don't hear why so many people say they are bad? Their synths are really nice and most of their new stuff has some form of android or ios connect. Even some of the synths. so....Right now I need a mixer with sd card record and again the Behringer looks like the one.
Behringer has come a long way in terms of quality. Their reputation as a company that makes cheap, low-quality gear is no longer valid, but some people will never admit that! IMHO they offer one of the best price/performance ratios out there right now. Which mixer are you looking at?
You missed the dark years of behringer brother. (Of which there was still stuff that I liked like the v-verb rack)
Ive run the ADA 8200 from my MOTU 828, 896 world-clock and the hi-end gets pristine! I guess the clocks inside the ADA's is not great. You can hear a huge difference from internal, ADAT to external clock input;. The problem i find with the 1820 is the absence of world-clock in/out.

I got the UMC today but i found it sounded completely different (sounded worse) to my focusrite scarlet solo while listening to Spotify and UA-cam through my Adam audio 7" monitors. All the bass seemed to have left and it was significantly brighter in the higher frequencies.. i would like to know if this is something you or anyone else may also have noticed or if Spotify sounds the same between interfaces for you.
I'd expect an audio interface to spit out the audio it receives from Spotify or UA-cam without colouring it in any way but for me this doesn't seem to be the case :/ hopefully there is a fix for this or maybe I've just gotten a lemon
i don't use my interface to listen to commercial content via any platform. I only use it for recording/mixing etc., so I can't really comment, but it does sound like you got bad unit.
So you are inputting preamps into preamps? Is that okay to do? Or when you plug in as a line input, does that bypass the preamps?
The Behringer definitely sounds better/clearer. Great drumming, btw.
from what i know, most people i know with external preamps, use their external preamp and leave the preamp in the interface neutral, so it technically passes straight to the conversion, don’t take my word on it tho, im a drummer, drummers are stupid lol
You can't bypass the preamps inside the Behringer units. I use a tube pre on my snare before the UMC1820. I do so not really for gain but for what the tube does. I also use an old analog Focusrite Octopre because it has a built-in compressor that is pretty nice. In short, I use the preamps as effects.
Hey man. I'm considering getting the UMC1820+ADA8200 combo. I noticed that the 1820 is 96khz, but the 8200 is only 44.1/48khz... Is this going to cause a problem when I mix? I'm very new to mixing but have been drumming for a long time. Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks!
After further investigation it seems that it would need to split each into 48khz, like other units do. I'm seriously considering the roland studio capture, seems like a great all in one unit with 12 mic pres, all with choice of phantom power. I'm such a damn newbie, excuse my dumb questions, cheers!
I'm sure I'll get flak for this, but honestly, the entire issue of 44.1/48 vs 88.2/96 is overblown. In terms of getting a really good recording, the quality of your signal chain is FAR more important, and then second would be bit-rate (24bit is preferred). At very distant third in terms of audio quality would be the sample rate. You will get great results at 44.1 at 24-bits with a clean, transparent signal chain (and a really good performance of course). The human ear can only hear AT MOST 22k cycles anyway. Most of us older folks (especially those of us who've spent a lifetime playing music professionally) can most likely not even get close to hearing 22k. In short, don't let the 44.1/48 "limitation" dissuade you!

How did you plug up you 1820 to your ada8200... i cant seem to figure it out
I connect the 2 via lightpipe (ADAT) cable. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Digital-Optical-Audio-Toslink/dp/B00NH11H38/. On the back of the ADA8200 you'll see an area labeled "Digital I/O". Below that it says "ADAT", snd below that are 2 connections, one labeled "OUT", the other labeled "IN". I connected the cable from the OUT on the ADA8200 to the IN on the 1820 in the section labeled "ADAT/SPIDF". Then, on the front of the 1820 I set the OPT IO switch to ADAT. Hope that helps! :)
Serious Question, what if i were to have 2 more additional ada8200, does that mean i can get 24 channels?
So the ADA8200 is designed to work with a digital audio interface as a way to add additional tracks. I don't think you could connect more than one unit to a Behringer UMC1820, for example. However, if you have a device like the RME Digiface USB, you could possibly connect 2 ADA8200s and a UMC1820 via ADAT lightpipe, and the Digiface would connect to your computer. You would then set the Digiface as the audio interface in your DAW. I know you can connect up to 4 ADA8200s to the Digiface, but I'm not absolutely certain about the UMC1820. It does have an ADAT OUT connection so it should work.
Hi! Really liked your video. Great work. Did you consider the X air line? They're two that offer 16 in and on the top of that, also offer some on board DSP processing, and a bunch more features. I had one once, and I really loved it. The only downside is that they have to be remotely controlled by a mobile device or computer app, so, no physical knobs. But still a good option.
I did not consider the X Air units, but a friend of mine has the 8 channel version. I am a bit confused as to what the application of that piece is....isn't it designed primarily for live PA situations? Plus, since I use Logic Pro's FX, I don't feel the need for the onboard effects on the X Air. That siad, it really looks like an interesting device!
What are the benefits of getting ADA8200 instead of second UMC1820?
The ADA8200 is designed to be a “piggy back” unit to the UMC1820, allowing you to add 8 more channels of I/o by simply connecting the 2 with an ADAT cable. If you have a Mac you could connect 2 UMC1820s together by creating an “aggregate device” in the Audio/Midi control panel. You cannot do that on a PC. If it’s just so simple to use the ADA8200 with the UMC1820 and your only option if you use Windows on a PC, so I’d go that route, unless you have specific reason to want 2UMC 1820s and you use a Mac. Sorry dude, I have zero experience with the Tascam 16x08. I can only speak to the quality of the Behringer system. As I said in the video, the Behringer UMC1820 combined with the ADA8200 is a solid system that I'm very happy with. I hope that helps!

Maybe I can help because I've owned both. I am currently using a Behringer UMC-1820 which I bought when my Tascam 16x08 just stopped working one day. I used the 16x08 for about two years connected to an iMac before it died. It worked really well, when it worked. Both units sound excellent. I didn't buy another 18x08 because I was a bit annoyed that it died after only two years. I have had some gear for twenty years and its still going strong. Getting just two years out of the Tascam was pretty annoying. I have a lot of Behringer gear which I have used continually for over 10 years and it is still going strong. Because of this I bought the UMC-1820. I've had it about a year now and it has been excellent.
What I do like more about the UMC-1820 is that six of the eight inputs are on the back of the unit. This is much tidier for me in the way I use it. Those six inputs have cables permanently plugged into them (four mics, and two cables from a e-drum head unit). The cables run neatly down behind my desk. The front two inputs on the UMC-1820 I use for temporary connections, for example when I want to plug in an additional mic and/or a guitar, or a bass. The 16x08 has all its inputs on the front so my permanent mic connections used to have to be plugged in the front then run around or over the interface to the back of my desk. Much less tidy.
The 16x08 has 10 inputs on the front that you can use simultaneously as long as two of them are line or instrument inputs. The 16x08 actually has a total of 16 inputs which can be used at the same time: as long as they happen to be the inputs you need. Here is a comparison of the inputs:

More inputs on the TASCAM, sort of. Better arrangement of inputs on the Behringer. Both sound fine. Maybe reliability issues with TASCAM. Maybe it was just my unit.

its hard to compare interfaces with just a drum beat. What really stresses an interface is a long session. Do a 3-4 hour live stream multitrack with 16 tracks going and see if there are any dropouts in audio during the entire session. That would be the real test for me!

Sir, I have a question... I bought the behringer 1820 and the ada 8200. I can't get direct monitoring of the adat channels... I can only hear the 8 analog inputs of the Uphoria on my headphones... The question is, the only way I can get monitoring of my Adat channels is thru the Daw??? There's no info about this on the web...
These units are mostly designed to work with a DAW. I can definitely monitor all 16 channels via Logic Pro, so I'm assuming that yes, you'd need a DAW in order to get that to work. However, it seems logical to assume that audio sent through ADAT should work in a self-contained way. Maybe try Behringer support for a definitive answer? I'd be interested in what they say as well.

MOTU had better low end. Behringer had better transient detail. I have to admit I preferred the Behringer.

i can not get my behringer 1820 to record 8 mics on 8 separate trax. no matter input n mono switch, i get track 1: kick left, snare right. full hard panned. ive even restarted interface and pc. nothing changes.🤬🍻
Without know what DAW you're using it's impossible to know what's going on. In general, you have to make sure your DAW recognizes the interface, and that it's set up for multitrack recording.

Do you think the Behringer UMC1820 might be a better purchase against the 15years old RME Fireface 800? Also I wonder, can the Behringer be connected directly to the Mac Pro Toslink IN port and being recognized as audio interface?

MOTU still sounds better but the 1820 is holding its own for sure.
I think the Behringer UMC1820+ADA8200 sound decent for the price point, yes, the Motu 192HD is getting older, but their weak link was the op-amps, and some Dc coupling needing to be done, I've got both a stock one and a Black Lion molded one, huge difference. Also have the Motu 1286 with all new filter caps and Brown Burr op-amps in that one. I run at 48 or 96 only. I think the big difference with a better world clocking for the Motu system, I went with a used Apogee Big Ben and what a Steller difference now. The other thing is I go out of the first Motu 192HD's digital out into a Benchmark 11 D/A converter. So I've taken my Motu system to a far better system sonically. Yes, it's still old but I don't care. The thing I like about using the Motu is you can have the 2408, 24 i/o and all the other ones they have built in the past hooked up to 4 units at one time. So I have a stock 24 i/o hooked full time to my 24 track analog recorder, so I can either bonce other peoples old recordings into digital or use my 24 track to just warm up tracks as an effect. I use the Midas M-32r Digital mixer for monitoring for my bands, and they split all 32 microphones into both the Midas and into 32 tracks of outboard preamps and compressors into my DAW. This is nice cause I don't have to patch anything or go behind my mixer. Put in all Mogami gold cable snakes coming off my splitters. That cost me a lot to run them to both the Midas M-32r and also all the analog 1073 Pre’s, Api, LA-2a, LA-3, Warm audio 1176, and joe meeks, etc. Just the cables I notice a huge sound difference, it was night and day. So yes, the Behringer is fine for what it is and does sound pretty darn good at that price point. A lot of my friends use Apollo by UA and that's great gear, but what I would need for my small studio it was way out of my budget. I give my buddy's run for the money any day with all the upgrades I've done in my studio, I've used Motu for many years, first gen 1, 2 and 3. Still have my gen two ones. lol. At the end of the day it's what works for you, I mean I spent 2k in just 8 Mogami snakes, and I also spent more on short 8 channel ones to go just from the analog preamps to the converts and then to the inputs of the Motu converter boxes. So right now I've got 3) 192HD's, 2) 1296Hd's, 1) 24 i/o but some are for back up, just in case. I use two 192HD's, 1) 1296HD, and 1) 24 i/o hooked up all the time in the studio. So all my channels are hot all the time, not patching and I also have a few the open channels with my API, Joe Meek, the UA 710 hooked to my large studio microphones. So we do a scratch vocal tracks and then come back with the real overdubs. Cause most of the time we record live in one room, don't have to but it's more fun like that. It all comes done to what your budget is and can you make a good recording with it. I think what helped my Motu system the most was a couple differnt things. 1) was better world clocking to get rid of jetter and then your coverters can work way better, 2) was the better op-amps installed in a couple boxes, big differnce. Another huge improvement with adding the Benchmark two channel converter right off the channel one and two on the the main mix buss, No jitter with that box the way it was built, and the last huge update with the great Mogami cables, I never knew it would matter that much but my sound is pretty steller now. So I'm a happy camper. So bottom line is if it works for you and you get great sounds to your ears then it's right. Cheers! Great face - off
*LOOK EVERYONE, here is the real game! Open up the units today and 13 years ago and its roughly the exact same chip set! The real difference is the newer stuff is BRIGHTER SOUNDING and the older stuff is a bit DARKER - NOT DULLER - DARKER sounding! You can do awesome with either one. I still use RME MULTIFACE I/0 with the Behringer ADA8200 Mic preamps...seriously fkn awesome, with my custom HIGH END DAW/DIGITAL MIXER!* So do not allow yourselves to be caught up with all the BS ENDLESS JARGON! .........If you want AIR, use EQ and boost!
I don't think this is a fair comparison as you are comparing MOTU pro gear to a Prosumer interface. MOTU is known for making high end stuff esp thier new AVB line up that's up there with Avid, RME etc. The new MOTU's even share the same DAC chips found in the Apogees.
I think that's the exact point he's making, the cheap Behringer is at least equal to an older, pro level MOTU. Good news if you're on a budget :)
@@leftmono1016 Behringer stuff doesn't last long as I wouldn't put them in the same category as MOTU or any other high quality brand like Apogee, RME, Avid or Lynx. The Behringer stuff is more cheaply made with lower grade components. My buddy had a one of those rack mount Behringer headphone preamps that died on him after 4 years of buying it. Motu stuff and others will last you over a decade or more.
Eman 08 - if you have the budget certainly spend the extra on higher grade products. However, if you’re not making money out of your gear you can spend much less without a noticeable, if any, drop in quality. Sure your Behringer might not last as long, but from experience of working in pro audio sales, don’t think that the big names are without their own issues!
Of course you’d expect the likes of MOTU to use higher grade components but for the home user it’s a case of diminishing returns - you won’t get the benefit.
We can probably agree that it’s a good time to be buying hardware - lots of choice at all price points.

If you dont like/trust the Behringer's only because its "cheap", go waste at least a thousand extra bucks for a system like this!!! AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!!! LOL!!!! This makes me wonder ... Why a company can make a good device at such a cheap price and other companies charge you so dearly for the same ???
Well for the most part it has to do with branding. For example, Focusrite has a very good rep as a brand, which they've earned over time by making high-end signal processors back in the day. Behringer used to make cheap crap. Either way, the audio tech has gotten cheaper while at the same time better. That allows companies to keep the price down, as the chips and other tech components are vastly cheaper to manufacture and sell. Focusrite makes 3 different audio lines at different price points, with Scarlet being the cheapest, then Clarette, then at the high end, the "pro" Red line. Is one objectively better than the others? Who knows!!
sorry but MOTU is better ... and I hear it even on not very good equipment ... just more low end and more "natural" symbols , high end is also cleaner
