Not much insight into the role of the Ulster Unionists here. So far as I remember the peace process at the time stalled until there was a Labour government in large part because Major had to pussy foot around the Unionists to stay in power.
The official name of the conservatives is Conservative and Unionist Party, they always had a link to the Ulster Unionists, more like an off shoot of the Tories in NI, and they nearly always helped the Tory government to remain in power when required.
Major had an alarming lack of self-awareness if he thought that electoral drubbing called the 1997 election was at the "appropriate time". Not that I would ever vote Conservative.
Thing is... most people did agree with me - that's why in 1997 the Tories lost the most seats in 165 years and why it was one of Labour's biggest landslides, if not their biggest. And that's a fact no matter how you look at it. And not a Trump "alternative fact" either. So I don't think you ought to be calling Farron a traitor when it was Major who ended 18 successive years of Conservative Government - I'd think Major would win that title of "traitor" for losing the Tory Party that election. It's easy to see which party you support because of your childish name-calling and emotive language. Nice of you to try and pigeonhole my politics, by the way. But I am neither right-wing, left-wing or centrist. I'm just interested in British politics in general without support for any political party or ideology. Toodle pip, old boy.
His great achievement was the General Election win of 1992 though it was downhill from there. The reopening of the mining issue and VAT on fuel were the "major" blunders which sealed his fate.
0:26 - "appropriate time" is Westminster phrase for "latest possible date" for a general election.
That's certainly the current Conservative government's thinking. No GE until January 2025 if they can hold out long enough.
R.I.P to Jill Dando
I love this BBC News era
I found the studio design very cold and unwelcoming. I much prefer the 1988 to 1993 newsroom set design.
You tell him Mr. Major.

@@johnking5174 Both parties are vile. Unionism is the worst thing ever. The countries of the island of Britain were never meant to be lumped together.

And the cones hotline. And deep divisions over Europe. And endless political and sexual scandals by his MPs.
Aidan Lunn Sleaze, Europe, ERM, Back To Basics hypocrisy...I first time voted for young Blair who inspired Trudeau and Macron!
The 5 years were up, there had to be a general election.
Interesting seeing this in 2019.
Major was a dull 👨 man.
History seems to repeat.
January 1997?
As stated in the description, this was 16 January 1997. (Check the recorded date of Iain Mills' sad death if you want to verify)
It’s all red tape. Hearsay. We just love predicting the outcome.
Jill Dando...
i remeber her 1961 99
Wow, I don't remember Anna Ford seeming this hot when I was fifteen! :D
