The almost surreal situation where a pocket of Afghans lived in relative peace and a normal life, while the rest of Afghanistan was not. This reminded me of an oasis built in the middle of chaos and unrest. Perhaps another good comparison is a castle with high walls. The people live within the castle are constantly being threatened by incessant enemies from without. Constant vigilance and armed protections are needed to keep the enemies away. The economy within the castle needed cash injections to pop it up.
This is the vision I see in the "westernized" Afghanistan, and I suspect this is what John Major is talking about. But he is being idealistic. Sooner or later, the defender of the castle will find it too taxing and too costly, financially and in human costs, to keep dong the same for another 20 years. What happened in Afghanistan was far from normal. And John Major believes that the West has moral obligations to keep propping up that unrealistic world. I think The West aren't doing it because they believe in democracy. They wanted to maintain a presence in that part of the world because, like Major said, it would be a vacuum if the West pulled out, leaving room for China and Russia to take over. But does the West have a choice? I think they realized that their global power is waning, staying is not an option.
Establishing an oasis-like island within Afghanistan is very unrealistic anyway. For it to last, it needs stability which Afghanistan is lacking. And it never ever enjoyed peace and stability for centuries anyway. To try to achieve the impossibility is beyond America, NATO, Britain, Australia, Canada, and the entire set of kitchen sinks thrown in. But how do you create stability in a situation that is beyond being chaotic?

The comment section has already plenty of comments to support part of what I am about to say and that is that John Major suffered from an image issue. However, what he has just said is by and large a very realistic and honest view of the UK and the Afghanistan issue. I think he is one of the most underrated Prime Ministers. Being a supporter of Welsh independence, I wish to state that Welsh nationalism (read: separatism) is not dangerous. Naturally, he meant 'dangerous' it in terms of breaking up the union. What else he said was absolutely correct. The Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are fully aware that because of the overwhelming number of English MPs in Westminster, that what England wants, England gets. So his point about English nationalism being far more dangerous is very true. Boris Johnson's administration thought it would be a good idea to ignore the devolved Governments at a time when he is in fact duty bound to consult them and to rub salt in the wound, his administration stupidly thought it a good idea to paste a union rag (aka flag to some) right in the middle of Cardiff. We all remember that stupid song he wanted school children to sing at the beginning of summer. It is as John Major says, not the correct strategy.

    • @dnmurphy48
      @dnmurphy48 3 роки тому +1

In what way has johnson ignored them? We are all currently part of the UK and so showing the national flag is correct. Only nationalist fanatics believe otherwise. The UK does a great deal for all parts of the UK, including heavy financial subsidies and the success of the vaccine rollout, that needs to be understood. You as a nationalist fanatic wants to hide the truth as it will impact negatively your support.

Over the centuries and even thousands of years, different parts of the world evolve differently.
The US using their military superiority to impose their ideology on others is self-righteous and arrogant.
It has resulted in the misery and deaths of millions of people all around the world.
    Few examples:
    > Vietnam War (1965-1974) 1.4 million civilian casualties (US Senate subcommittee report in 1975)
    > Iraq War resulted in 185,000-208,000 violent deaths.
    > US-led War in Afghanistan (2001-2021) 171,000 to 174,000 people were killed in Afghanistan, including women and children.

    - Biden ‘handed’ Afghanistan back to ‘savages’!
    - Dozens of women gathered in Kabul to demand the continuation of the rights and freedoms that women enjoyed in the two decades after the Taliban. The women say they were attacked by Taliban forces with tear gas and pepper spray when they tried to cross the bridge to the presidential palace.
    - "Twenty-five years ago, when the Taliban came, they forbade me to go to school," said journalist Azita Nazemi.
"I studied for 25 years and worked hard for a better future. We will not allow the past to happen again."
    - "The Taliban also hit women in the head with guns, and a number of women bled to death," said Suraya, another protester.

In October 2001, the United States sent troops to Afghanistan, and while attacking Al Qaeda and the Taliban, it also caused a large number of civilian casualties. Due to the lack of authoritative statistical data, all parties are inconclusive with regard to the civilian casualties in the war in Afghanistan. It is generally believed that since the US military entered Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, more than 30,000 civilians have been killed and injured by the US military, and about 11 million people have become refugees. After the US military announced its withdrawal in 2014, Afghanistan is still in turmoil. The New York Times website reported on July 30, 2019 that 363 people, including 89 children, were determined to have died from US military bombs in the first half of 2019. According to the assessment of academics at Kabul University, the war in Afghanistan caused an average of about 60 million U.S. dollars in economic losses and about 250 casualties every day.

John Major needs to see more of the world. If a country can't control who enters, a country of 50 million could easily attract 500 million migrants before the place looked so terrible that the rush to leave becomes the news. Control means making an illegality of an unauthorised activity in this type of case with a penalty of return to place of origin. If people are flooding out of their countries we should act to improve the situation in their home country - that does not have to mean regime change by military means.
The UN may be imponent, and down to 3 super powers - US, China, EU, of which only two have a security council permanent vote, the UK has an opportunity to create more permanent voters due to the veto provisions. France should declare the EU has a veto it will honour, and the UK should declare India has a veto it will honour. If Major travelled more, he would realise India is now in a similar position China was when its veto was recognised.

he was an abysmal prime minister and quite petulant in his behaviour. His thoughts on devolution are wide of the mark - the more you give the more they want., The SNP is using every means at its disposal to gain independence, and for the UK to surrender to and pander to them will make it inevitable. Devolution was very badly handled by (of course) Blair and left too many anomalies which allowed a cynic and fanatic like Sturgeon to exploit them to push her cause. As to illegal immigrants, which major disingenuously and emotively calls refugees he is wrong there too. He seems to advocate allowing in anyone who chooses to come, regardless of their background. The pressure this already puts on our social infrastructure is unsupportable, Our housing stock is way too low for the current population, our NHS is creaking, schools are overwhelmed in some areas wtih all the languages and cultures we have to support. John Major is not personally affected by any of this - he lives in a nice, white middle-class part of the country.
he made one interesting point on Afghanistan about the youth of the population and what it has lived under. However he forgets that most Afghans do still support Sharia law and an Islamic state. maybe not as puritanical as the Taliban but not much different. There are plenty of Muslims in this country who have known nothing about democracy and women's rights, but who support Sharia. A for staying in Afghanistan, it would have cost tens of billions more (paid by the US not the rest of us) and more western and Afghan lives lost.
Part of the reason the US is closing inwards is due to the abysmal support it gets forom the other NATO and western countries. Everyone wants US support and money, no one will step up to the mark and share the burden fairly. But we all whine about their behaviour.

It was easy to say that when a person sets foot in England he is a free man because he was very likely a cut of the same cloth. His language, culture and religious beliefs could easily be absorbed by the locals. Otherwise he was just passing through. That is not necessarily the case today in many instances. For instance, a Muslim moderate in Canada said on September 12th. 2001 that "9/11 was good for America and another 3 or 4 wouldn't hurt." It was eerily apparent at that time that one of the attacks would be a Tet Offensive similar to Viet Nam. That turned out to be Al Bad Baghdadi's caliphate and now a resurgence of the Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. I think Trump's lack of empathy towards his own people and his sowing discord everywhere has really hurt America. A Hollywood has no business being in the White House!
