On the farm I used to work on, we sprayed (color) the ewes to show how many lambs they are carrying (we scanned them, sprayed them). As to your drop to 0, then back up, it could well be that you have one or two cells in the pack that discharge too quickly, and the cell balancing capacitors are not large enough to cope quickly with this. The BMS for the pack should have the ability to show voltage per cell, so it would be easy to see which cell(s) are the issue. Most frequently on house packs, it is the connection between the bus bar and the cell that is faulty, and not the cell. Quite often the connection comes loose or has slight oxidisation.

Hi Marc, I think (these are my private thoughts) you have to take into account he temperature of the battery. There’s an optimum temperature and the capacity of battery varies with the temperature. While riding the temperature is increasing and the capacity is diminishing . If you start charging directly after riding , you can store less electricity into the battery and are getting less out of the battery. That’s the reason that after cooling down, you can get extra power out of the battery although it seems empty. Perhaps you can browse through the menu of your bike and see if you can read a temperature sensor. At a cool morning the capacity is less and in that case preheating helps. If it is too hot, cooling down helps. That is done in cars. Perhaps this explains the capacity phenomenon. 😀
I do wish you nice travelling days and I’m enjoying your series!

    • @Protonus
      @Protonus 2 роки тому +3

It's not temperature. The battery actually wants to be warm, range goes up as heat increases. This is a sign of voltage rebound, which happens from permanently damaged cells whose internal resistance has increased, and therefore, they lose voltage faster than the healthy cells. Once the load is removed and the cells recover some of their voltage, the average pack voltage increases, and thus you get some of your capacity back, at the expense, of further damaging the already weakened cells. The battery needs replacing.

  • @score-graffix5694

Marc, you mentioned the "foul fruits in the basket" - it is actually very fitting to what I assume to be the case as well - during discharge a few cells with a lesser capacity discharge of course faster. The mechanism that keeps all cells all at the same level of voltage is the "balancing" (remember the last minutes of charging seemingly taking forever?), but the balancing rate can't keep up with the rate of discharge (or charge, when charging). Then you reach zero % (LOL - no pun intended) and need to stop for a few minutes - that is when the balancing has a chance to kick in and bring all cells evenly back to par on the voltage level, thus giving you another 20 clicks of range.
// The other way around - would the discharge continue beyond the point were some cells are already at minimum voltage, those few cells would go into deep discharge, from which they might not be recoverable and go from weak to broken cells. //
At least that is my technical interpretation of what is happening (@other EV riders - pls correct me if I'm wrong!).
Keep pushing and keep those wonderful impressions (and your authentic attitude) coming - I'm enjoying each and every one!

If it is raining than better to cover it fully. You shall aim to have the battery at .~25 to 30C before taking off if it is less than 22C expect power and rang to be affected. So if it is cold outside cover it for the battery to be worm, if the ambient temp is more than 25 leave it half covered.

I suppose you already noticed this, but if you didnt:
These 14.4 packs, its very hard to be precise on the State Of Charge, SOC.
It seems that each pack has its own personality, based on variability of individual cells, age, use, etc.
Ive ridden my SRS for two years, put 30k miles on it so far. On mine, after drawing down the battery on a fast ride, say, my daily work commute, after sitting for about 20 minutes or so some kind of rebalancing between cells occurs via the BMS and it shows around 10% more SOC than when I stopped. This percentage is different for individual bikes, on a spectrum from being a really annoying limit to how far you can go, to almost completely precise.

    @eefneleman9564 2 роки тому

Well, I certainly enjoyed that ride.
You should definitely make a video for the haters, where all we see you do is plug and unplug Eve.
The battery doesn't seem to be balancing the individual cells. Maybe there's a way you can do that as the owner, or maybe it has to be done at a dealer. Maybe they can do some sort of check to see if the battery is still ok.
Found this on the net, but I don't know if it's still relevant:
"Cell Balancing is a self-maintenance process by the BMS.
It ensures that cells operate at very well-matched states of charge to ensure even load and better battery performance and overall lifetime.
    -Mechanism
The BMS has connections to the battery cells via the interconnect wiring and can sense cell voltage.
There are 28 contacts on the side of the back of the board (as viewed from the front of the bike looking at the battery) which connect to each cell in the "brick" series.
The BMS feeds small amounts of current to cells that are abnormally low in order to maintain battery longevity and minimize the possibility of cell damage.
It detects voltage levels on all cells, through interconnects between bricks that harness each cell in the same position in the brick's series, and through this same path able to balance cells by targeting current to the cells with the lowest voltages.
Cell balancing because of the limitations of this circuit can take a long time and is part of why Zero recommends keeping the motorcycle plugged in when unattended by default.
Stations that shut off when current draw is low (such as ChargePoint) may not allow balancing to complete.
Cell balance may be monitored with the Zero app, however only a single number is presented, the value (in millivolts) of the worst imbalance.
    Schedule
Cell balancing often happens at low current levels, mainly during charge tapering when the charger is operating at the voltage limit in "constant voltage" mode.
It also can happen when the bike is long-term plugged in but turned off. The BMS may wake up and control charging specifically to balance the cells."
If I read this correctly, the cells are balanced by leaving the bike on a charger after it reaches 100% SoC?

Please tell us more about where you are, your journey, etc and less about charging point please? A map? same with all battery charging and useage - if you do it quickly it will falsely tell you its full and if you do it slowly and properly - the charge will slowly come up to full and stay there.
If you drain it fast - the battery will give you to a "minimum non-dangerous for the battery health" and then you see the 0% - after a while it recovers some power.
A car battery will do the same - if your car is on the edge of starrting but won't quite go and the battery is good but low...leave it 15 mins and it will crank normally and engine will start.
Analogy would be trying to fill a water tank with a funnel and just throwing a bucket of water in - the excess will spill over and the tank will only have 80% level. But if you tip the water carefully into the funnel - it will fill to the brim and not spill but will be full 100%.
Have you ever had a AA battery in a device that was running slowly and you warmed it up and it was temporarily recovered and worked again - that's the same - squeezing the last drop out of it.
I do think the manufacturer should allow for this in the software though. But it's early stages of a technical gadget - normally reserved for scientists and technicians at this stage of development - not rushed and pushed out onto general public bcos theres a politcal and ££££ agenda.

In England the sheep are painted for identification by their farmers. Many are allowed to roam freely on the moors and can mix with other sheep. So painting them allows the farmers to identify them. I assume it's the same thing in Ireland.

I find the whole "update your bikes performance via an app on a phone" to be weird, but shows my age. The mechanical issues on the Dominator i could at least understand and fix. Having just come back from a 5000km road trip to France where my "smart phone" decided to be dumb and no internet service, i would have to hate to rely on a signal to fix an issue. Interesting to watch regardless.

Hope everybody realizes that long distance road-tripping is by far the hardest thing for EVs to do, especially when there's no brand-dedicated charging network like Tesla's superchargers. That's no excuse for the lack of transparency on the charge/charging state, but even with a relatively long commute you'd only ever be charging this bike at your destination and not even thinking about it. Road trips are still very much an adventure in a way it hasn't been in gas vehicles for 50 years! If the limit was instead performance, would we even care about them? I used to commute 15mi on my '13 FX and it was borderline especially when I took the highway, but that was only 5kWh and older tech all-around. Would love an SR/S, though I no longer commute!

The only 3 things I can see wrong with electric motorcycles are the price of the bike, the distance you can go on a charge and time it takes to charge up .
