  • Samoyed vs American Eskimo. Which would be a good fit for you? Yeti's Mom has owned both breeds and has loved and adored both. A Samoyed and American Eskimo, both Spitz breeds, look quite similar, but have different personalities and are known for different traits. American Eskimos are good dogs for one person and are great guard dogs. Samoyeds love everyone. The larger the family, the happier they are.

    Confused on what the difference is between a Samoyed and an American Eskimo? There is a big difference between them, from their size, to personalities and their working ability and energy level. They both love the snow. Muppet, my American Eskimo, would roll around in the snow and he'd get excited when it was snowing. Yeti loves it too.

      From my reading, the Eskimo,- once called the German Spitz, is related more closely to the Pomeranians, who once were larger than present- at 20-30 pounds, but Queen Vicky took a fancy to them and bred them down to smaller sizes that are common now, our Pom Jasper was a genetic throwback to more of the original size, and just to confuse the issue, our female Sammy was 35 lbs, the same size as our Eskimo. The Sammy is supposed to have originated in central Asia, and with their people were pushed north into northern Siberia. They are said to be one of the more ancient breeds and are little changed from the wild canines. I've read that evidence of them in domesticated form has been found dating back around thirty thousand years They were the first creatures to set foot on the south pole, as they were pulling the sleds, and got there first, the people being behind them on the sleds.

      Hello, Cranky Yankee! Muppet, the American Eskimo I owned when I was growing up, looked very similar to Yeti. They’re the Mini-Me’s to Samoyeds, as far as their looks. Yes, it’s true that female Sams are between 35-50 pounds. Yeti weighs just over 65 pounds.
      The big difference between the 2 breeds, is their personalities and that Sammies are northern breed working dogs. Wow, are they hard workers, who rarely tire out. Muppet (American Eskimo), had some energy, but not the high energy and strength and sheer power of a Sam. Sammies are super friendly dogs, who love and adore everyone. Eskies are particularly fond of normally just one person and are very protective.
      Thank you for taking the time to comment. Interesting hearing about Poms, as I don’t know much about them. I’ve never owned a Pom, nor have I been around for them too long. They are cute little fuzzballs.

      @@crankyyankee7290 my Pom looked like an American Eskimo except he was the standard apricot colour. He passed away and I got eskie because I knew it would be difficult to replace my Pom. He was that special. My eskie however acts like how the person in the video speaks of her Samoye. He is super friendly with everyone whereas my Pom wasn’t and super protective of me. I prefer that as I didn’t have to worry about him getting stolen. My Pom only barked when he wanted something - outside, pet me, my toys under the couch, get it. He was super smart.

    One thing you forgot to mention: Samoyeds can be extraordinarily protective. If they think someone is harming a member of their family they can go into full tilt attack mode. I've seen this with both Samoyeds I've owned. Children have to be careful not to "roughhouse" with their friends in front of a Samoyed.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  Рік тому +2

      I’ve been around many Sammies over the past 40 years. Yes, they can be protective and they can also run into another room if there’s an argument. Both of the Sams I’ve owned have run into another room when my husband and I have a verbal disagreement. None of the Sams owned by personal family members have gone into protective mode. I haven’t seen it happen before, which is why I didn’t mention it. If a child is roughhousing with friends, I could see them barking and jumping up on the friends.

    I've never heard Samoyed pronounced this way. I've raised a Samoyed and an American Eskimo. I loved them both with all my heart. The Eski was super quick to train. The Eskie liked my husband more than the rest of the family. I felt a little left out at times. She was by my side all day long but when my husband came home I was second best. Our Eskie loved visitors and especially women.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  Рік тому +2

      Eskies are definitely one person dogs. They’re super quick to train, as they had been circus dogs.
      When you watch the big televised dog shows, Westminster and The National Dog Show, Samoyed is pronounced the way I pronounce it. Professional breeders pronounce it that way too.

    • @agvella777
      @agvella777 Рік тому +2

      Either pronouncement is fine. Samoyed is pronounced that way because it is the “correct”, albeit not the “common” pronouncement, it's named after the indigenous Upper Siberia Samoyed people. An excellent book through many iterations is “The Complete Samoyed” by Ward if anyone is interested in these tibbits.

    Hi, I recently adopted a 2yr old Eskie girl named Aura. True to that breed, she's supposed to have a dense, DOUBLE coat by now but all she seems to have is that her outer guard hair and I can see right through to her pink skin! She's my 3rd Eskie and I recall they had nice, thick double coats.

      @YetisPlace  10 місяців тому +1

      I’m sorry to hear about your American Eskimo. I feel that she had either undergone stripping of her inner coat, or shaving it all off. When you shave a dog you shouldn’t shave, it leads to rough growth, the undercoat doesn’t grow back as it should. That happens if a groomer isn’t properly trained.
      I’m really sorry to hear this and do hope her inner coat can grow back.

    Hello I recently got a Samoyed puppy and I had a few questions/need advice she’s five months and can’t sit still at all when I try to brush her she constantly try’s to worm her way out or chew on my face,arms
    Also do they usually drink a lot of water because she drinks a lot a lot
    And is okay to trim the fur on the inside of her ears and this is the last question is it normal for the fur to curl a bit?

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  4 роки тому +16

      Hello, Jade_Draws. Congratulations on your new Samoyed! 5 months old, she is an active, chewing puppy, with a lot of energy. Exhaust her before grooming, by playing a lot and bringing on a good walk. It will make controlling her easier. Brush her in and enclosed space, such as on a grooming table, or in a bathroom, door closed, with limited space. Bring treats and give them to her, the moment she settles and is good. You can gently drape one of your legs over her, to make her feel enclosed and protected. It will help calm her. Start off with short grooming sessions, using one brush and lots of treats while she’s being good. If she bites you, yip at her, like a puppy does when hurt. She’ll listen and begin to realize she shouldn’t do that.
      Yeti drinks a lot of water, so we don’t fill his bowl all the way. We fill it about halfway. Otherwise, he’d just keep drinking and have to go potty all day and night.
      I would not trim the fur inside their ears. The fur helps keep their ears warm. You can trim the fur between her pads of her feet. Trimming foot pad fur, eliminates painful ice balls in the winter and provides better grip for walking/playing/running.
      Yeti has areas of fur that have gentle, loose curl. Mostly, it is very long and straight.
      Great questions! Thanks for watching!

    I’m a bit shocked at what this lady says about Eskis. My late eski was great with everyone and didn’t love just one person above another. He was a great family dog. Great with my kids of all ages. Never bit or lost patience with them. He was super smart…could find a way to escape out of our dog room gate, while our other two dogs had no interest in doing so (and are different breeds). He was a good watch dog and while he did bark especially when people came to the door, it wasn’t excessive. The hair is essential to keep maintaining…it will get everywhere lol

    We have had both ,plus, _3 Sammy's over the years,1 Eskimo, 1 Pomeranian ,and now 2 Eskimo /Pom. mixes,yeah the Eskimo's can be very wary of strangers,and need to be watched carefully around them,our sams loved everyone ,and everything,our Pom. ( a throwback at 26 lbs,,, a rescue)was a once in a lifetime dog,just incredibly well behaved,the most outgoing dog I've ever encountered,he made friends with everything he met sadly, he had a tick borne disease when we got him ,then developed other serious problems,and left us at 6 years old,miss him badly ! Then we rescued our first Eskeranian 20 lbs ,a bit touchy at first(don"t touch her backside,or tail,as you would be snapped at,she had just been dropped at a shelter, at 1 1 /2 years and I question her early treatment. She has since become very gentle,trusting,and loving,and very close to me,then another Eskeranian came along, needing a home,(the first looks like an Eskimo with a Pomish face,the second looks just like a miniature Siberian,mostly black with white,and a Siberian face,and build) who is orientated slightly more toward the wife,both great dogs,who love going to car shows,meeting people,and visiting nursing homes ,the first spending a lot of time in one while I enjoyed a longish stay in one for recovery,and therapy from a fractured neck,(doing great now).The second was raised as a puppy with a mature cat,and has some comical cat behaviors.
    When I was a kid we had a huge Husky,half Malmute,half Wolf,a big fearsome looking ,gentle baby.

      Please don’t sell your puppy. Involve play with your training. Tire them out first, by bringing on a long walk. Then, train for short times, multiple times daily. If you own an American Eskimo, they’re very smart and learn quickly. Use fun ways to train. For sit, involve treats and play. For stay, immediately after they’re staying put for a short time, reward with play and treats. Make training fun for them.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  4 роки тому +2

      Samoyeds are very difficult to train. You have to think like they do, which is tricky if you’ve never owned one. Goldens are much easier to train. Their coats are oily, they can get stinky, but they listen. Sammies are odorless, but they shed a lot and don’t listen. Both breeds are friendly. Sammies don’t bark when there’s someone at the door. Goldens do. Goldens are good for first time dog owners. Sammies are a challenge for first time owners, due to inability to listen, becoming bored easily and thereby, becoming destructive. If you know and understand all of this, you would be a good fit for a Samoyed. I talk about how to work with the breed in many videos. Our channel would be a big help to you.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  3 роки тому +2

      Sammies are bigger, therefore more cuddle space. They often enjoy playing more than cuddling, but once they get tired, they do enjoy cuddling. They’re super friendly, happy dogs, who love everyone.
      American Eskimos, attach themselves to one person. All other people, they don’t pay much attention to, if they’re family members. If anyone else comes over, they become guard dogs. Muppet, the American Eskimo I had while growing up, was attached to my Mom. He bit everyone, other than my Mom, at least once. He didn’t feel remorse. When I’d be petting Muppet, sometimes he didn’t like it and would snarl.
      Sammies love everyone, don’t snarl, don’t bite for mean reasons. Not a single mean bone in their bodies.
      Sammies need a ton of exercise. A lot of long daily walks, plenty of playtime. If they don’t get that, they become destructive and will eat your house.

    • @lucky5627
      @lucky5627 3 роки тому +1

      Yeti’s Place How much exercise would you consider to be a good amount?

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  3 роки тому +1

      They’re working dogs, who originated in Siberia, hauling heavy loads of wood, food and equipment for their owners. Their energy is unstoppable throughout their entire lives. Yeti is brought on 3 long walks daily, of at least a half hour each time. He’ll often beg for more and needs a lot of playtime, fetch, wrestling with his humans. Samoyeds aren’t good dogs for first time dog owners, due to their energy demands and extreme intelligence. They’re one of the smartest breeds of dogs. Meaning, they don’t listen to human commands. You have to train them how they want to be trained. Use work, play fetch, while instituting training sit, stay, come, down. They don’t learn how many other breeds learn. Dog and puppy training, provides basic skills. When you come home from those training sessions, you have to combine the training with having fun, playing, allowing them to haul equipment, or while pulling you on roller blades/skateboard.
      I stress, they’re not good dogs for first time dog owners, due to the difficulty training. Once you’ve owned another breed of dog and have accomplished training the traditional way and are up for the challenge of owning a Sam, then they would be a great fit.

    • @YetisPlace
      @YetisPlace  3 роки тому +1

      That having been said, if you’re up for the challenge, they’re the friendliest, most loving dogs. They need a lot of grooming, nearly everyday. Grooming can be a challenge, but provides good bonding time.

    Wow, am I glad I watched this! I rescued a dog last year from a high kill shelter, who is half or mostly shiba, and looks very shiba coat-wise, but has short legs, shorter tail, broader chest/body, shorter snout, slightly straighter ears, and her eyes are more almond-shaped and bulge out a bit. All this time I thought she was half pomeranian, but I just happened to fall on some AE pics, which were making me wonder if perhaps it is half AE genes. Now that I've listened to your breed descriptions... omg, she must be half AE! She is very aggressive toward ANYONE other than her one person (who is now me), is very protective and barks accordingly, and generally does not tolerate even the other animals... 1 shiba she wants to fight with, my submissive one she actually loves now. But she has attacked everyone (human and animal) in this house since being here (over a year now). She just bit my husband last week, in fact, and we thought she had decided he was mostly okay. I do think there is a lot of error in former owners training, likely had none. I have come close to considering euthanizing her, as I have to keep her on a leash ALL day, holding it or tying it to the table, as we've yet figured out how to get her to stop being so fight/bite oriented. She is 10. I would love to send you a pic of her so you can determine if she looks AE! If I could find your email, I'd love to talk a bit if you have any suggestions for her! Thanks!

    Lol love this video I have an eskie mix I adopted when he was two. I've had him for over two years and finially bought akc and ukc puppy from a farmer who breeds and shows his dogs I've adopted all of my animals including my snake fish cats ect. But I wanted an eskie SO BAD and searched for years and could not find one anyways I agree with EVERYTHING you e said, besides the kid thing. I had my kids when my older one was around 6yrs old. He stopped sleeping with me. Stopped cuddling with me. Everything. If the baby cried and I didnt immediately get up he would bark at me. The kids are a little older now he diesbt di that any more but he still sleeps with the kids over me lol. The new eskie though is a nipper idk if that's an eskie tarte or a teething puppy thing but the kids handle it well. After this video I'm interested in a samoyed. Great video!!!

      Thank you for your comment, daddysgirl102938. My late Eskie loved my Mom and snow. He was cute and loved being brushed by me. Would beg me every night for a nice brushing and really enjoyed his belly brushings. They are cute dogs and good guard dogs, who don’t need as much exercise as Sammies. If you want a really friendly, non-guard dog, who’s super energetic l, a Samoyed would be a nice fit. Thanks for your comment!

      Yikes! Scott, did your dog swell up? That’s as bad as chasing after a baby skunk.

      @@YetisPlace that’s in Russian .
      Stress on first syllable .
      Sæ moid moid not like in anthropoid or carotenoid , but like the Brists say oi .
      And you’re welcome . I loved your video .

      Thank you for loving our video and for the Russian pronunciation. In the United States, it's pronounced by professional Samoyed breeders and at the largest dog shows, the way I pronounce it. The world is a large place, with many different pronunciations, depending on where you live.
