  • ‪@alinghiredbullracing‬ really made an impact with the first reveal of a Version 2 AC75. It seems to be a radical extension of the philosophies seen from the winning yacht of Ac36 - Te Rehutai. This video gives an initial analytical reaction to the dramatic night in Barcelona.

    I like it, the most interesting angle for me was another picture I saw from the front quarter. Really highlighted the nice long scoop between the nostrils and cheeks for directing the apparent wind over the hull towards the sails, and below the scoop the nice the curve of the hull to lift and drive it (the mid section angled part).

    So what’s the chances of team nz completely rethinking the rule limitations and coming up with a drastically new concept to everyone else this time? It really is a case of hurry up and wait to see what they come up with in my opinion.

  • @jamesaron1967
    @jamesaron1967 3 місяці тому +2

    The aft pod design is very interesting and something I didn't expect. The bow treatment where there's a stepping I believe is called a _chine._ It is increasingly being adopted by cruising catamaran yards for their high-performance models. As would be expected, it provides more volume above the waterline while retaining a sharper profile below and is an acceptable compromise between all-out performance and interior space. Although a bigger concern for cruisers, chine also provides slightly more buoyancy in rougher waters. As you pointed out, this will only make sense on a pure race boat if there is a minimum volume regulation. Boy, am I stoked to see what the other teams have designed!
    Pronounced hull chine on production performance yacht... ua-cam.com/video/lx_nNp9q_Eo/v-deo.html

    • @barryscott6222
      @barryscott6222 3 місяці тому +1

      The Chine also directs more water/spay off the bow, and keeps the boat a little drier.
      And hopefully also... less spray on the faces of the helm and navigator.

    I'm guessing the large, bustle/skeg in the front might compromise sailing up wind, Crosswinds might push it away... One would think, too much free board certainly affected upwind performance for New Zealand in San Francisco.

    • @Penguinracer
      @Penguinracer 2 місяці тому

      The apparent wind direction at the speeds at which these boats sail means that in reality there's very little crosswind component & the wind is really approaching the boat about 13- 15 degrees off the centreline.

    I'm no Te Reo speaker, just an ordinary Kiwi, but your pronunciation of the Te word, ["The" in Maori] grates. The E vowel is more akin to the english word tear than tee as in a golf tee. Something to do with the way the language was transcribed into written form using only 15 letters and French vowel sounds. Unlike English, the spelling is consistent. Keep up the good work on the boats though.

    yeah you seem pretty much spot-on with you analysis, steroid induced bustle, lowered deck, planing step on the bow. the wasting of the pods also reduces weight at the stern. re foils a lady always saves some secrets for the final undressing

  • @richardjames1970
    @richardjames1970 3 місяці тому +1

    why are they not looking at the hull as a lifting surface?

    • @neiltwaterhouse
      @neiltwaterhouse 3 місяці тому +2

      probably because the maximum amount of aerodynamic lift your could generate by the hull (at the expense or compromising wet/displacement mode drag which would equate to more difficult transition to foiling mode) it makes more sense to generate that lift by the foils (with much better lift to drag ratio) and minimize aerodyamic drag of the hull through the air.

    • @nedoneil123
      @nedoneil123 3 місяці тому +1

      Or should the hull be a downforce surface once airborne to increase riding moment? It is almost like you want lift whilst touching the water and then you want to switch.

    • @nedoneil123
      @nedoneil123 3 місяці тому

      @@neiltwaterhouse So are we saying hulls just need to get you out of the water first and then be as close to zero drag as possible? Surely a lot of races will be won without touchdowns? So do you design something super fast when it flies and give up on the light wind days?

    • @Si-jk4iy
      @Si-jk4iy 3 місяці тому

      This was covered off in the last cycle.
      Not chasing suboptimal lift from shapes that will increase global aero drag once foiling.
      Use the foils for better lift characteristics. Decrease drag on the hull and give better spanwise treatment from the skeg. Improve Lift and Drag from mast and sail interaction.

    • @jamesaron1967
      @jamesaron1967 3 місяці тому

      @@Si-jk4iy Indeed but I wonder where the tradeoff between increased drag and increased lift lies? The French offshore racing team, Gitana, was researching lifting surfaces added to the airfoil-shaped arms for the amas of their Ultim trimaran. They were considering it for the next version that will replace their current boat. The rationale was lowering the foiling threshold by increasing aerodynamic lift to supplement the foils in marginal conditions. That might improve average time foiling a little which can add up to a lot of time gained over long ocean races. Granted, with movable surfaces the crew can then adjust for a decreased drag profile once the yacht is foiling, something not possible with a speculative lifting hull inquired upon by the OC.
