I think the importance comedy has been lost.
The court Jester has always been important because, on an archetypal level, he is the only person allowed to publicly make fun of those in power and steers a very dangerous path between what is socially acceptable and what is not socially acceptable.
Alistair Williams' point about how if you are in the centre you are seen as right wing is so true. I have done the political compass test twice and I am just right of centre and towards libertarian. However if you looked at the political views of my relatives and friends you would think that I am a brown shirt.

I was really surprised to see who your guest was and what a fantastic comic Alistair is. I was quite shocked to hear him not understand the term alternative comedy as that's what split comedy in two. In my job, I have worked with many star comedians over the years many now have passed away and as was said at the time the alternative to comedy is tragedy and to me, that is what it has become. Many of our greatest comics of the past were just funny people with funny bones they were as funny on stage as they were off. Now it is different many so called comedians are not naturally funny people with funny bones anymore and would never know how to construct a gag with a beginning a middle and an end. They just don't have the god given talent of simply making people laugh without it having to be a political statement. Alistair is a funny lad with funny bones that jumps right out of the screen. I for one really don't watch comedy now as it isn't funny to me but I would watch Alistair in a heartbeat. Larry Grayson once said to me about critics. A critic is someone who writes about something they can't do themselves and put like that you see there opinion is neither important or relevant. I think that's why many so-called comedians today go onto TV shows in packs rather like wolves as many could never hold an audience on their own. Well done to Alistair and Peter Whittle this has made my weekend.

Alistair you are a clued in young man and breath of fresh air in these politically correct delusional times, i know there are plenty out there but unfortunately they are rarely given a platform, but times will change, the push back is already in progress. cheers Peter for having him on your podcast. keep up the good work Alistair and stay strong.

AW’s Burger King Brexit sketch has to be the best piece of comedy writing in over a decade!! Utter genius.

The middle-classes have got a lot more touchy. Back in the day, according to Alexei Sayle, he used to go on the stage at the Comedy Store, call the middle-class audience a load of c****, and they used to love it. The change can only have been brought about by a guilty conscience.

Stewart Lee still does quite a mean audience-bashing routine.

The anti-Brexit group think of the British comedy circuit has put me off all the comedy panel shows and stand-up shows that I grew up with and used to love. I can't watch HIGNFY anymore as I am bored of effectively being called an idiot. I did catch last Fridays episode and at the end of it I noticed I hadn't even chuckled once.

Agree .. stopped watching it years ago . because it had no equanimity, I don;t think Ian Hislop actually realises and Paul Merton is often very quiet (when I have seen repeats flicking through the channels. I think the rot set in when Angus Deayton was kicked off.

I’m telling everyone I know how great this man is... and I didn’t know his opinions on real food- he’s completely correct, most people don’t realise that just eating real food is how you can stay healthy ( who’d have thought it!!) Alistair you are a very talented young man and you deserve to go far xx

Alistair is a very gifted comedian, MSM comedy is so boring and stale. He’s a breathe of fresh air.

A fascinating insight into modern comedy - or lack thereof. It's quite sad that a pleasant young guy like Alistair should be finding things so difficult. In the west generally, we are living through times in which most things are so very controlled. Almost everything has to be approved by some sort of authority before it is allowed to go out into the public arena. Basically freedom of expression has been sacrificed in the name of political correctness or "wokeness." Freedom always has entailed some risk but it's how most of us learn and grow to be well-rounded people.

In the sixties England ruled the airwaves with our music blaring from pirate radio ships. When the government introduced the Marine Acts to stop the ships the music died. Instead we got BBC radio 1 plus commercial radio which was similar to it. Approved music for the masses, criminal.

The challenges faced by this guy just to get his comedy in front of a wider audience are extremely worrying. It is good that he can laugh at things that are not a laughing matter.
