    Great video! I worked for Public Health in a community/county in Virginia that had a high Hispanic population. They were migrant workers that worked seasonally for the local apple orchards! I LOVED my job. It was early in my nursing career (2008) and after a year I left to finish my RN to BSN program and to also get more hospital experience. I was so lucky they hired me with only 3 years of nursing experience (mainly in psych and dialysis). I regretted my decision for leaving and have been trying to get back in to PHN. I know the bedside is NOT for me and I love community health and patient education. I have been working in Case/Care Management for 5 years. My local health department had a position posted in September. I applied and interviewed in October. I was offered the job and I accepted!!! I’m so excited!!! I foresee myself staying in this role until I retire. It’s a state job and my district covers 4 counties as well. I took a pay cut (not major) but I’m just overjoyed!!! There is nothing like Public Health and I’m so glad you have brought light to this role for nurses. I’ve been a nurse 16 years and have done a lot but nothing compares to Public Health ❤️❤️

    A public health nurse helps with the community instead of rotating patient like bedside nurses. I think this appeals so much to me because of my goals of becoming a RN and minor in public health. I would love to help out the community and become part of a program to help the public.

    I have been looking into nursing because of the variety and different pathways of careers but I had also been looking into doing public health. I think I found my two passions that fit into one!! Now I’m REALLY excited! I love health, nutrition and wellness but I also don’t completely love the hospital setting. That’s amazing that you can work in many more settings as a public health nurse other than just hospital mostly.

      @@MayelaPerez I will say that if it were not for COVID, we probably would not have known about the different opportunities that PH offers. My school does not even mention PH as an option for new grad opportunities. They are really pushing us to do bedside, which is not for everyone. I've learned through this experience that you really have to choose what makes you happy.

    I'm currently in Nursing School in LA and I had a couple questions. When you say we need experience as an RN, do you mean we need bedside experience, or just general experience? Also I am interested in fitness, educating people about fitness and nutrition; do you think Public Health Nursing covers those needs? Really informational video!

    • @MayelaPerez
      @MayelaPerez  4 роки тому +2

      Hello and thanks for watching! It really depends on the type of population you will be working with. Most require some RN experience, clinical or other. Also, fitness and nutrition are important factors of public health so I'm sure there is a PHN role that incorporates this. I suggest to start looking at your surrounding county's PHN job postings to see what's out there. Hope that helps!

    • @MayelaPerez

      Yes. Each role will be serving different populations. My role is with farmworkers, others may be foster children, etc.

    • @Kay-kf8ds
      @Kay-kf8ds 3 роки тому +4

      This was the main question I asked the nurses that interviewed me for a full PHN position. They all said PH nurses can be 100% successful with no bedside nursing experience. In fact, one nurse who had 10+ years of ICU experience felt like she was starting brand new as a PHN because of just how different the two positions are. You definitely may have to study/brush up on clinical manifestations of certain disease processes or developmental stages depending on the population you are working with, if you don't have clinical experience in that particular area. But it is totally doable.

      Thank you so much❤ That means a lot. I would recommend working in a community clinic setting. It can be admin staff if that's what you have experience in. If you want to be a PHN, I don't think becoming a CNA is necessary. CNAs usually work in the bedside settings and PHNs don't.

    Hello I am a senior in High school and have to choose a major. My question is what is the difference between being a nurse and then getting the public health certification v.s Getting a master's degree in Public health. The jobs that you can get with those degrees/certifications to me are pretty identical and I'm very confused on what to major with. All I know is that I want to help people as a whole and have an interest in health program specialist and disease investigator. Thank you!

    • @MayelaPerez
      @MayelaPerez  2 роки тому +2

      Hello! Hope I can clearly answer your question. These are 2 separate degrees. With a public health degree you are not eligible for a RN license so you would not be able to do any "Nurse" roles in any capacity. You would have to get a degree in NURSING. I'm not too familiar with a public health degree but would think you would work with health organizations in policy planning, etc.

      You can become an RN with either your ADN (associates) or BSN (bachelors) often times the associates program is as long as the bachelors program and most hospitals / jobs are requiring your BSN now, if you don’t have when first hired it will be a requirement after working there. It’s makes much more sense to get your BSN

      Yes! In California you need a BSN to apply for a PHN certificate. No extra classes needed.

    Hello,is it all public health nurse cant work to a hospital?

    • @MayelaPerez
      @MayelaPerez  3 роки тому

      Hello! A nurse usually wouldn't work in the bedside with the title of PHN but all PHNs hold a RN license. That has been my observation here in CA but it may be different in other states. Hope that helps.

    Hi, I am currently double majoring in pre-nursing and public health, however my gpa for pre-nursing won’t be competitive enough for the nursing program. Do you think it’s still possible to become a public health nurse?

    • @MayelaPerez
      @MayelaPerez  3 роки тому

      Hello. You need a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing and a RN license to apply for a PHN certificate. At least here in CA.
