It is probably better to think of the first beat count like this, "ah-1". So we do the Bun-butting (Hitch) at the "ah" count and step on the "1" to keep the step timing. This automatically causes us to think at the onset in half beats. (ah= half beat, then number "1" automatically follows that lead as the last half beat). Reason -- If we use the "1" as the first reference to the beat, we have to shift automatic thinking of the number "1" = full beat to the "ah" = half beat. This makes it harder.
