Karen, I have a large sewing/craft/art room and have two of these racks. Super functional. My large rulers hang from one that butts up against my cutting table. I use cloth covered baskets to store fabrics. Great ideas here!

You don't have a quilting basement with your 6ft by 4ft cutting station? I know right, very few do. It's more of a home office at that point.

We are so grateful for all the little details you explain that others don't, like WHY you put things where you do, WHAT KIND of power outlet or lamp you use, what NOT TO DO that isn't obvious (like hang things on the outside of the cart or put all your tools in one box) and what ought to be obvious but isn't (that the thread catcher can store something when empty or you can hang tools on yourself while sewing). You are my FAVORITE sewing vlogger. I learn something from you every time and have been sewing for 64 years. (That is not a typo!)

This is very helpful. We bought our current three bedroom home with the anticipation of our adult children moving out on their own. I had planned on making the smallest bedroom my sewing room. Years later, they are still here due to economic reasons, student loans, and so on . I got sick of waiting on my dream space, so I am carving out a space for my sewing "corner" in the master bedroom. It's not ideal, it's not what I dreamed of, but sometimes you just have to work with what you have. I sacrificed some wall decor to make a hanging pocket organizer for all my quilting rulers, marking pens, graph and template paper and some tools. I bought a small cabinet on wheels for my tools. I have a desk that does double duty as a sewing table with a folding table set up as my cutting/ironing station. The tool chest gets pushed under the cutting station, out of the way when I'm not sewing. Above the pocket wall organizer, I hung four wire thread holders with enough space for 128 spools of thread. I still have my fabric in clear plastic bins in the closet, and no, it's not convenient to have to drag them out every time I want to look through my fabric, but at least my sewing area is neat, organized and clutter free . I still hope to move into a room someday, but for now this works. And I have a happy space, which is what matters. So to all you other ladies, and gents with limited space, just letting you know it can be done with a little forethought and some creative storage ideas . You don't have to spend a fortune either. Look at thrift stores for storage containers. Think outside the box. A knick knack shelf can hold small jars of buttons and pins. A paper towel holder can organize spools of ribbon. You get the idea. I enjoyed and did my best sewing when my space was a closet and dining room table. I have a 13’x13’ room now and sometimes I dread going in that room. I have a large sewing/embroidery machine set up on one table and about 125 spools of embroidery thread and more embroidery designs than i could use in 20 lifetimes and I haven’t touched any of it in 3 years. I also have a 1938 Singer Featherweight that my hubby just thought was the best thing he could buy for me. Nope. It’s sitting on a shelf in a closet. I have a Pfaff Passport 2.0 that I piece my quilt tops on and I love it. Sometimes I wish that’s all I had. Then I wouldn’t feel guilty about all the other stuff in the room. I haven’t done any garment sewing in probably 40 years. I used to sew most of my and my daughter’s clothes. I doubt I could create anything now that would be decent to wear. I do enjoy piecing quilts and i would love to quilt them. Right now I send them out to a LAQ. I have really enjoyed finding this channel. I doubt you will see this comment due to the age of your video but I have gotten much inspiration from your videos.

If you have one of those elastic rope with hooks on the ends ( automotive section) use to hold your cutting mat straighter so it doesn’t bow while in the holder. My kids called them hookie-bookies. Because I explained you could use them to hook your books to a bike.
We call them bungee cords

Ahh! Great suggestion. That was my only worry about storing the cutting mat vertically. Once they bow, they never lie flat again!

@@Ejlrstn my moms mat bowed and she couldnt afford a new one. Someone told her to put it out in the sun on concrete or asphalt for a couple hours. Worked like a charm!! Just remember it's out there and dont drive over it! :) (also I wouldn't leave it out more than an afternoon as prolonged exposure can make them weaker).
Oh my god thank you! I'm moving in with my fiance soon to our 750 sq ft NYC apartment, and unfortunately, there's not too much space for me to have the same sewing space I had in my parent's basement!
This will be especially great since I can wheel it wherever I feel like sewing ☺️
In a few years I'll retire and we're going to be living in a school bus renovated into a tiny home. I told my husband that we had some serious talking to do about the design and how to fit my sewing supplies into it!

When you live in military quarters they are nothing like they portray on TV. Bedroom closets not only store cloths but everything, Christmas/holiday, air conditions in winter, everything you want to keep, and yes sewing things. Having it on a cart really would be the way to make it transportable to where you want to sew. Love watching.
Hi Karen Sometimes I have to watch a video a couple of times before the message gets to me. Your sewing triangle is also a computer "triangle". I figured out that if I clean off my desk completely, I'll have room for my scanner next to the computer on one side and the printer on the other. My work is portable with my laptop in one bag and the scanner and cords in another. The external hard drive fits in my bag, so I grab 2 bags and I'm out the door.
Believe it or not many of your ideas work outside of the sewing realm and that makes your ideas even MORE flexible! So, just keep up the good work.

I wish I would have had this video 18 years ago when I lost my sewing room because of having more babies. I stopped sewing because it took too long to gather things from 4 room, because I thought I had to keep like things together. My oldest two kids got married, and I have a sewing room again!!

Nice Video. I am not too much into clothes so half of my huge 8 drawer dresser is my sewing storage. My sewing machine is right on top, so very often I hop out of bed and just start sewing. After COFFEE of course!

I'm lucky to have a dedicated sewing space, but I fall prey to the tendency to fill whatever space I have and it's often messy. So happy when I see you have a new video.
So I just started to learn quilting this year and as I was working on my first quilt top, my sewing triangle was on 3 different floors of my house. I got a lot of exercise, but I definitely need to work on making it fit into one room or at least 1 floor of the house. 😅

Wow! This is AMAZING!!! 🔥 I was contemplating putting some heavy duty shelving over my desk to store all the sewing supplies & crap ;) but this idea is so much better! I have very little space but now I can actually imagine choosing the "caddy" size small enough to still have access to the cabinets behind them when moved. And this video came to my attention at the just right time - my second machine, an overlock, just arrived and I had no idea where to keep it! Love love love you for putting this out!!!! ❤️❤️

Thank you so much Karen for sharing your heart with us! I love all your tips & tricks! Since I live alone, my apartment becomes a quilting Studio from September to April/May. I use my dining area with a 70" folding table set up in front of an 8' window. I leave it set up since I love quilting during those months. One part of the table, I have my cutting mat, the other part I have my old singer sewing machine with a tray for supplies I need on hand. The sewing machine is so heavy that I don't remove it until April. I have a lovely aqua colour decorative cabinet in my Living Room with doors and shelves where I keep all my quilting fabrics, batting, library, containers with misc leftovers from projects/fat quarters/charms, strips and some string blocks. Also, my iron, sewing machine parts and rulers.
Then in my spacious bedroom, by a 6' window, I have my Mother's Singers 401J zigzag sewing machine in a cabinet. I use that one rarely since presently I have a computer sitting on top. Besides that sewing machine, I have a 4 drawers rolling caddy with all my quilting tools.. My ironing board is easy access in a storage closet so I usually put it away when I'm done quilting for the day. I began quilting for my grandchildren after I retired and fell in love with it. I don't call myself a quilter since I do it as a hobby and for my kids, grandkids & 5 sisters. I enjoy it! I'm 75 and I still clean my son's 3 bedroom house each week. It gives me money for my quilting hobby. I make a quilt or 2 each year. Thank God that I have Faith and not Fear during these times. I love all your videos and thank you so much for being an inspiration to me! Blessings!
Ps...my biggest quilting challenges are purchasing fabrics & choosing patterns! It is a learning curve for me!

Wow, I’ve now watched this 3 times. It is the quintessential video for efficient design of a tiny sewing space. I’ve also used the same racks, minus the wheels, under my 30 year old folding cutting table. I pushed the legs to the center, cut PVC pipe to length to uphold the top and voila I’ve got 4 of these racks for storage under a table top that had no storage under it before. In my small sewing room square footage was a premium and now under the table I’ve got tons of useful space. I configured the top section to hold long rulers and a couple of project boxes on one side and the embroidery unit (large) on the back side of the other. These racks are terrific! Your adding the electrical plug, swivel lamp and the pocket is brilliant! Can’t see where you’d need much else if you’re short on space. I also like the rolling stool you’ve used. Can you tell how much I liked this video by my gushing! Lol. !!!

I love the table cloth pocket idea! I want to make one for my zone 1 tools because I am terrible at keeping bins organised lol. I can hang it on my sewing table and use my machine's weight to keep it from shifting around. While my sewing space is very small, it is dedicated to sewing so I luckily don't have to shift around anything when I'm not sewing.
Easy enough to make...and that table cloth was just something I had
While the pocket for the mats is lovely, it bothers me that my mats would not be kept flat. I store them under the bed on the floor so they will always stay flat. I have ruined my largest most valuable mat by keeping on an uneven surface. It never flattens out, once bowed.

@@dorsetboronia4551 I can't remember which sewist it was, but I have seen a video where she used a hair dryer to fix a warped cutting mat. I havent tried it myself, but you heat up the mat then weigh it down to try to flatten it. Once it's cooled you repeat the process until the mat lays flat. I don't know if it will work but it's worth a try if your mat is already ruined.
@@nataliestanchevski4628 Yes it already useless. Certainly is worth a try. I never use it, but have kept it. What happened is that the chest I kept it on was shorter so it draped over the side. Or actually the back. I didn’t realise and when I came to use it , it was bent almost at 90* angle. So I’ll have a go. Thanks.
My house is very small, and my family of five takes up all the room... so I have a space set up for sewing in my garage. When we love to quilt, we can make it happen anywhere!

Great video! I have a rack like that in my bathroom lol. I sew in my apartment kitchen. So I got a chest of drawers from a flea market really cheap! It holds everything! And the top I laid down some shelfing plastic and then my cutting mat. Perfect height!

This made me rethink my sewing room and want everything on a cart! Is that wrong? 😅 It's reminding me of how much I use to get done before I had more room and stuff. When I could actually see everything I had to work with.

I'm a lucky one that has an entire (not huge) room dedicated to sewing and crafts, but am always looking for ideas to get more organized, and thought hmmm, put all my sewing stuff on a cart, that would be awesome. And the 1, 2, 3 Zone ideas is one of those forehead smacking duh moments for me too! lol
@@debbiebeemer4795 Isn't it funny how we want for a big space to sew and end up with more of it for storage than actually using to create. It's hard to keep track of all we have especially when we do many different types of crafts. I sew quilts and garments but also bags which have different needs. Then add in hand sewing, crocheting, and anything else I can get into anf it becomes more than I can keep track of. I've tried to use an inventory method but that just seems like "work" to me lol and I still want this to be fun!
I have entirely too much stuff.
Love this idea and I already have the same cart! When I did home hemo-dialysis it kept all my supplies close to my bed and my machine. I no longer need it for that since my transplant. I need to get it out and organized like this. Thank you so much for the great idea.

I took your idea in my RV. Since I live alone I took out my dining room table. One bench I made it into a sit down table with shelves underneath.the other side is a stand up workbench. The rack sets i between the benches in front of the window.

This is awesome! I have a huge loft dedicated only to my crafts, but I was never able to make it function properly. Now, I realize it's not the amount of space, but rather how it's organized. You are a genius. I have all of my sewing equipment hidden away from my toddlers hands but this gives me inspiration to move it into a corner of another room that she can't access. I think this is doable without taking over the other room.

When I sewed in small apartments, I used something similar. But I never had enough space to roll it into a closet. I made a fitted cover for the rack and it functioned as an entry table when I wasn't sewing. I used a tall slim thrifted lamp as my sewing light source that lived on top of the entry table.

The rolling shelves look like a game changer. Some of my less-used items are kept in the attic, so, sewing is my exercise. Up the stairs, down the stairs, up, down, ....... Thanks, Karen, for the helpful video!

WOW! I live in a 600 sq. ft. apartment and I'm taking one small corner of my modest living room and turning it into a quilting area. I've been trying to think ahead and plan out my area to meet my needs but, as a new quilter, I wasn't quite sure what all I would need, how to set it up and how to store it neatly so it isn't an eyesore for myself and guests to look at. This video is a true gem for people like me. I can't thank you enough for sharing all of your ideas.

Can I just say, I think your amazing. You have wonderful ideas. I have a bedroom as my sewing space, which is wonderful, but I think I have too much stuff. This cart looks like a great idea. I wish I could send you pic of my room and you could tell me what my problem is. I keep trying different things to no avail.
