I read in reddit that one of the core message of Maboroshi is how one grapples with the a life that doesn't go anywhere. Not everyone can or want to aim for 'success' or 'better life'. The film showed that, even in a stage of life where one is 'stuck', there is meaning to life. I think the way it handles the romance between Mutsumi and Masamune is okay. But I do acknowledge that I got a bit bored watching the beginning of the film and found myself just enjoying Enoki Jun's (Masamune's VA) voice.

Yeah, Enoki Jun is superb in this. Probably because I got used to his role as Yuji in JJK, but boy his voice stood out.

Same. Overall, it was weird for me. I had a lot of questions after I watched it. I was so excited when I started watching it and weirded out after I watched it.

I think the weakest part of the movie is the pacing and plot. It meanders a bit and while it almost feels intentional that it does that, I also wish it took a slightly more straightforward approach. That being said, I absolutely loved the overall concept and theme of the movie that I think hits harder if you're older. Naturally, our response to hardship in our lives is to be envious of the past, to pine for a simpler nostalgic time where we didn't have to deal with the loss of others, the stress of reality or just feeling stuck in general. The movie takes this and flips it and presents the idea that if this nostalgic illusionary dream world was an actual world with people in it, majority of them would actually be envious of reality -- of us.
They're stuck in a situation where they cannot change. Trapped in a specific period of time, at a specific location, and aren't allowed to feel emotions or change. Whereas, even though reality can be difficult and painful -- we all still have the freedom to change ourselves and venture out and see whatever we want to see. The overall theme of appreciating that you live in the present in reality is so good and is what resonated with me the most. However, it feels like the film doesn't focus on this concept as much as it should and instead has multiple themes and concepts surrounding it that do end up feeling like they overshadow the characters and the film's pacing and plot. Fantastic themes and concepts but a bit disappointing character and story attached to them.

It's similar to how the Akira movie was. Compressing a long detailed story or a story that depends on manga elements usually doesn't quite work as well.

I'ma be honest I'm having a hard time reconciling with the film. It was good enough but so melodramatic, and boring i struggle to explain it to others without them getting distracted. I also think the setting is a little weak... Conceptually the author makes a cage and says don't leave, representing stagnation or whatever... But it the whole story seems like a divine act from the author to the characters. It just didnt feel immersive enough. I felt rather detatched from almost everyone.
