    Gardening season is in full swing and I'm trying out some raised garden beds on the farm thus year to improve or water drainage issues. We've been getting a lot of rain and or clay soil is getting really compacted and takes forever to drain. So raised garden beds it is! We are trying the very popular square foot gardening method made famous by Mel Bartholomew author of the Square Foot Gardening book series.
    In this video I tell you what we are filling our raised beds with and I teach you how to create the grid that really makes square foot gardening what it is.
    Supplies you'll need:
    • measuring tape
    • hammer
    • nails or screws
    • twine, rope, etc. (you can also use wooden trim or sticks, pvc, etc)
    • pencil for marking wood
    This 4 foot x 4 foot raised bed cost me just under $15 and is a great way to start growing food, herbs or even just flowers. This is the size suggested in the Square Foot Gardening method. You can learn how to make this raised bed with my step-by-step video tutorial here: • How to Build a Raised ...
    Before using any woodworking tools please practice safety precautions to ensure proper and safe use of all tools and supplies. Read and follow manufacturer's instructions for the tools and supplies you are using. Use eye and hand protection if the project requires it and of course, have fun!

    Nicely done! I used square-foot gardening at our last house and loved it. I did use the Mel's Mix and it worked well in our Midwestern clime. One thing I did was used eyelet screws to hold the rope. It worked well and I didn't have any problem with hurting myself on the eyelets even though they stuck up probably 1/2 inch from the surface of the wooden raised bed. Good luck with yours!

    Today i bought all the wood for my raised bed garden. Went to the home depot and asked for the scrap wood. The had a huge cart full of unsightly lumber. I bought 1 x 6 by 8ft for $1.04 each piece! I bought 4 pieces. I also bought a few 2x4 x 12ft for $2.10 each! Im so happy! I saved a lot of money. They also had burpee seeds buy one get one free!. If anyone is thinking they cant afford the lumber just go to the home depot or lowes and ask for the scrap or the bad lumber. They always have a cart full of the bad stuff they cant sell. They have all different size lumber on that cart.

I just have to get the wood from home depot. And chicken wire. I like how you explain everything in detail. I cant wait!!

    Wonderful step by step, I also watched your how to on the raised garden beds. Did you happen to take any photos of your garden after you planted in it? I live in the city and will be doing these this year. I live in a pretty hot climate so I've started ally seeds indoor and they're about ready to be harden for outside. Hope all is well with you and hopefully you post an update.

    I tried the SF garden many yrs ago using the Mel's mix. I had good initial results but my garden was not in a close by location & out of sight = out of mind, so I ended up scraping the whole thing recently after it filled up with weeds. :(

    • @ledfootdude
      @ledfootdude 9 років тому +1

      Adriana Vega The grids make it easier to see the "square foot". Each square will grow something different. Its a great method especially if you're new because you can grow a lot of food in a small space and its very easy to tell what are weeds because they are not in the "grid" pattern. Here's a great page I found that has a summary of S.F.G method. www.plantandplate.com/how-to-plant-a-square-foot-garden/
