    was worried that i might have all females (my pair spawned last night) i noticed that both had what looked like ovipositors. but one was was bigger and cylindrical while the other was kind of pointy and cone like towards the tip. I saw your video and it looked exactly like that so im assuming thats the male.

      yes, the genital papilla on male cichlids is always more slender. They usually have to lay eggs several times before they are successful. Good luck!

    G. winemilleri gets much larger than just the 8¨ that you're saying. I've personally had a group of 4 that were over 12¨ big. Was an old group though, nowadays I do again have a group of 5 that are quite young (about a year and a half old) and already ~9-9.5¨ big.

      Or perhaps your winemilleri is a misidentified larger species? Supposedly altifrons should be the biggest

    Great video, how well would 6 geo's and 4 green severum fare in a 125? Also, would love to see a video from you about the severum.

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  4 роки тому +1

      that should work well together - no severums here at the moment, but there will be some in the upcoming discus video

    Geopaghus are the easiest cichlid to breed....their fry strong and already can eat live tubifex since day 5 of hatch.

    I walked past my tank 2:29 am and 3 of them are digging a huge pit. I've never seen them do this but I got juveniles this past june or july. They shouldnt be breeding already right? They dont look as big or colorful as yours. They were sold as winemilleri from imperial tropicals

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  3 роки тому

      they live with G.abalios and G.dicrozoster in nature, so you may have either one of those if your fish are wild caught. if they have reached 3" and they are tank raised fish they could breed that young.

      the males have slightly longer extensions on the tail and dorsal fin, but i would just wait until they form a pair.

    Whats the breeding behavior of the Geophagus .I've got 3 Geophagus surinamensis and I noticed the male is constantly nipping the females and lip locking with them? Is this breeding behavior?

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  4 роки тому

      yes, that is often the start. You likely don't have G.surinamensis (it is rarely exported but that name is used for many species)

    is it okay to keeping a spawning pair in 120 gallon than keeping a group ?

    Very nice! Can these as adults be kept with cardinal and similar size tetras?

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  2 роки тому +1

      no, they have a large enough to eat fish up to 2", most tetras would be a welcome snack.

    • @Constantine_Cvl8
      @Constantine_Cvl8 2 роки тому

      You could try with alestidae tetras, like congo tetras or african red eye tetras, they get larger than your usual south american tetra.

    How to distinguish male and female

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  4 роки тому +2

      the male has slightly longer fins and a bit more steep sloped head. It is subtle, but always better to get 6 fish and let a pair form from the group

    Thank you for this informative video! My 3 year old Winemilleri just spawned today. I have a group of 5, in a 150 tall, with a Satanoperca, 2 Rotkeil Severums, and 3 Red Back Manacapuru Angelfish. A bit overcrowded I know. I don't anticipate any of the fry surviving. Anyway, thanks again.

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  Рік тому +1

      yes, you would have to take them out when they are free swimmingl Angelfish are actually quite efficient at eating fry!

    • @IcecoldDan26

      The eggs didn't last through the night. I'm not sure if the first time parents ate them, or they couldn't defend them against the other tank mates. Oh well, that's life I guess

      @@IcecoldDan26 first spawns don't always get fertilized, they will likely try again in 10 days or so, and improve their process...

      Thank you for the advice. Today is my normal water change day. Is it ok to keep on schedule? Another question I have is about feeding. Should I continue to feed as normal during the spawning process? Thanks again!

    • @belowwater
      @belowwater  Рік тому

      @@IcecoldDan26 yes, i would feed and maintain as normal, you could also skip a water change, feed a bit more, then do it one week later, larger volume and then slow the feeding. That would maximize the amount of eggs, but best let them get this right first. my pair in the video spawned 3-4x before they got it right.

    I was wondering if the water you breed them in is hard or soft water? and If so is it possible for them to breed in hard water?

      yes, they will breed in harder water also.
