  • Disturbed did a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's song "Sound of Silence" This song instantly spoke to me and the message I took away from it really made me think. I knew I had to interpret it. I hope you enjoy it.
    Lyrics:
    Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left it's seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
    When my eyes were stabbed
By the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
    People writing songs
    That voices never share
    And no one dare
    Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "you do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out it's warning
And the words that it was forming
    And the sign said
    "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sound of silence

Orion Jackson it’s true “ASL” so if you’re new to ASL maybe you’re used to English signs or PSE? But this is true ASl and the greatest 3D version telling this songs story. I was an Interpreter & lost my hearing in car accident 15 yrs ago. It allowed me to enjoy this song again. Thank you Michael

This is beautiful. I found this when my ASL 4 class was told to look for a signed cover of a song (we have to copy what the person in the video does sign for sign, facial expression for expression). This is perfect! My teacher was really impressed with the way you interpreted and signed this song.

It's so beautiful to see you make poetry... This song has so much meaning and when you make it a story with true ASL it takes on a beautiful meaning. It's even beautiful when people sign the exact words, although when you make it a story it is astounding! Thank you for your story ❤️

Oooo, goosebumps. I don't speak ASL (or any other SL), but I when somebody signs with feeling (like you do here), it makes the music so much more... intense....alive....real. Even without knowing the signs I could tell it wasn't a literal translation, and I loved it. Thanks! :)

@Michael Scott First I want to start by saying that I once in a blue moon comment on any videos on UA-cam. So I just want to put it out there that this was something worth commenting on. Secondly, I’m a student at a university and taking ASL but I’ve been learning ASL for about 8 years prior and you have one of the best interpretations of songs I’ve ever seen! As far as I could tell, it was a perfect ASL interpretation. If there was any PSE or SSE in there, I couldn’t find it. You did such a fantastic job portraying the meaning of the song, kept to the beat the song was going to, and your interpretation flowed amazingly. A “fantastic job” doesn’t do you interpretation justice either, I can’t find the words to properly describe your interpretation. My university has an event where students of the local college and university are signing for our local Deaf community and I recently found this song and was looking for some inspiration on some parts I didn’t exactly know how to translate into ASL. Side note: this event requires the songs to be in proper ASL, no PSE or SSE unless that’s just how it comes out in the song (basically an ASL translation that just happens to correlate to the English words). I thought I was going to be searching for a while since most songs on UA-cam are PSE/SSE. But your interpretation...flawless. Props to you, glad to see the Deaf community has access to a song that does their language and culture justice. 👌🏼

Thank you for your kind words and taking the time to comment. I read all my comments and try, as best I can, to reply to them as well. It means a great deal to me. I am glad you really liked the video and my interpretation of the song. I wish you the best in researching, Interpreting, and performing for your upcoming event. I’m sure you will do great!

Michael Scott No, thank you for providing excellent work and access to the Deaf community. I myself am not Deaf, I am hearing, but I have been involved in the Deaf community it’s and I know they always appreciate the access to songs and other things that aren’t usually redly available to them. I don’t speak on their behalf but on my own.
Thank you for your kind words as well. I am not going to school for interpreting, I wish I were, but I love the language and the community so I wanted to stay involved by taking classes and honing my skills in ASL. My main passion is in Physics but i also have many fields I wish I could major in. Unfortunately it’s just not possible for me to do every field I’m interested in otherwise I would do interpreting.
Again, excellent work on the interpretation and the performance. I definitely had to give props and my respects where it was due. It’s rare to see an actual ASL translation so I was quite impressed.

I love how visual you managed to make it. We started with your interpretation and are now making it our own. We can only hope it turns out as well as yours!

There is a Signed Song competition happening In Jersey (UK) in November and one of the entries have chosen to interpret this, going to be very interest to see what they come up with in comparison. Yeah there are some very close similarities that link all the languages, its always good fun!

I loved this, thank you so much! I was learning ASL years ago, and had many friends who used west cost ASL. (I am more pidgin) I don't recognize some of the signs, and I was wondering if you use east cost ASL? My kids are learning ASL in homeschool this year, and this is a good topic for us to explore. East cost vrs west cost sign. Thank you, the emotion you convey in this is wonderful, this is the example I used to show the kids how you talk with your whole body, not just your hands.

I currently live on the east, but I'm from the west. Generally speaking style and pace are the biggest variances between regions. When it comes to music, most times I stick to whichever form best fits my needs for the song.

Do you have an ASL gloss of the signs that you used? I have a school project where we have to find a song done in ASL and perform it in front of the class and then analyze the ASL gloss?

    • @mikews13
      @mikews13  5 років тому

Nikolai Kolcheck I’d have to look. I’m not sure I have the gloss anymore. I don’t have have a lot of time to rewatch and gloss it again. I might be able to, but if you’re on a time crunch I’m not sure I could do it in a timely manner.

    • @nikolaikolcheck1073

@@mikews13 I completely understand. I appreciate the quick response also. I am on somewhat of a time crunch but if you don't have the time to re-gloss the song again if you don't have the original gloss, I totally get that. I don't expect you to go out of your way to do that, especially when it's a short-notice request on my part. Either way, great job on your interpretation of the song! I just found your channel and you have amazing interpretations of songs, the best I've seen as most songs are translated into PSE/SSE. It's amazing to see that someone understands the ASL language fully and can properly use classifiers to truly show the meaning of the songs as ASL grammar would suggest. Keep up the amazing work!

Right! I can't simcom for my life and I've been deaf - and known ASL since - I was 13. I speak, I sign, but I don't speak and sign. It's not a functional possibility for my brain because of the differences in gloss. I start speaking in ASL gloss or signing in a really funky, mixed up way that doesn't match any language in any way cause my brain is 100% confused lol

Which part? There are instances of classifiers and use of setting up a 3D environment which would have no literal word equivalency.

Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Interpreting in general, but music interpretation especially, does not use signs for words. Musicality is done with, classifiers, concepts, 3D space, and lastly specific signs. It is for this reason that just because someone who “knows” ASL, does not mean they can interpret it. They are two different skills.
There is no translation to this because I didn’t translate the song, I interpreted it through concept and classifier use.
      I hope this helps.

    • @CADIatears

@@mikews13 Michael Scott True. Let me clarify. I do understand interpretations. There are some very good signers on UA-cam channels. I'm a subscriber to a great many. But as you watch the signs, you have to understand the interpretations as well. Your interpretation was well done, was well displayed, was well conveyed. But if you can't bring the watcher, along with the story, it's just noise. That's whether it's in spoken word or in interpretation. I agree with a lot of the comments here that it was a beautiful interpretation of the song, one of the best I've seen. Maybe even, the best I've seen. And I do understand that ASL is not a word by word interpretation, it is a concept. It is a living language. When I come across signers who don't interpret their signs, or use signs that I am familiar with, the effort loses something in translation. Because in order for me to evoke the response that would be elicited by the video, I have to understand it. I'm not looking for a literal translation of every word that was signed with a sign that accompanies that word. One of the commenters on here said that they had a Sign by sign extrapolation of your video. I'm only asking if anyone has that they share, so that I can fully appreciate what I see. I do understand the difference between ASL, PSE, and SEE. I was raised with ASL. I'm a little rusty, so I have taken recent classes. But with every language, what good is it if you can't understand it. I love French because it sounds beautiful. I love Latin because it is the basis of most of the world's languages. I love ASL because it's expressive and it's emotional and it's ethereal. I feel the same way about the written word. I guess what all this is trying to say is that, in order for me to follow along and share the experience, I need to understand the sign that you're using to convey it. I take a clinical approach to learning. When it comes to ASL, I like to learn words so that I have more than one way to express or convey a concept, and idea, and expression, a feeling, an emotion, a story. I'm familiar with the use of classifiers, concept and 3D space.

Is this really ASL? Because currently I am learning ASL, and I know a few signs, but there are some signs that don't fit to the text. Like nearly at the beginning, it seemed you signed "always", but there is no "always" in the text. Could it be English Sign Language or a kind of regional "dialect"?? But althought, the performance was great.

    • @mikews13
      @mikews13  5 років тому +1

      eriKtainment
Yes, this is ASL. Signing word for word is English. A music interpretation will regularly not be exactly what word is sung but rather an “interpretation” of the meaning. ASL will not “fit to the text” more often than not.

All is good. 😉 Interpreting music tends to be highly concept based and following meaning rather than spoken (or sung) words. It can also be difficult for beginners if they are trying to match up words to sign especially when classifiers are being used.
Good luck with your classes! I hope you fall in love with it as I did!
