Have you ever been listening to a record and asked yourself in frustration, “Why does MY groove not feel nearly as good as THAT drummer’s groove?”
Trust me, we’ve all been there. Your groove isn’t smooth & polished & danceable, so in the end you doubt whether you’re really GOOD ENOUGH to ever play with a band.
And I get it, because honestly this is a must-have skill for a gigging drummer. So how do we gain it?
Well guess what… We can clean up our groove AND make the audience dance by utilizing ONE THING. I’ll break this down for you today. YOU CAN DO THIS!
Check out this additional lesson for all the nitty-gritty on grip & motion if you’re just starting out!

Great lesson. That bit about dynamic consistency is key and a lot of drummers miss the importance of it. Thanks for the tip on the metronome app. I've been looking to upgrade my metronome and it saved me a bunch of money! I appreciate your dedication to helping others develop our craft.

I love the groove played by Questlove in The Roots song "The Seed". I think it's a combination of his super tight playing and the rhythm guitar that make that groove so awesome.
Another groove I love, and love to play, is the groove Zigaboo Modeliste is playing with the The Meters in the song "Sissy Strut".

I just listened to John Mayer Vultures on UA-cam.
Awesome song and drum beat was consistent till end where he lowered dynamics for John’s guitar.
    Very cool song and beat.

What are those rattle thingies on the snare called? Is there a "technical" name for them? Thanks 🎉😊

I just realized you are in Canada. The minute I heard the term ‘wonky’ it clicked! Plus that pad seems elusive to me in the US. What pad is it?

I've been drumming for one day. And all I'm asking myself is. How can I make any of my body parts do what I want it to do with some consistent timing.

go slow, adding piece by piece. for example, start with your dominant hand on hi hat holding a steady tempo, counting 1 thru 4. a metronome can help, but not necessary at this point. once that feels comfortable, introduce the bass drum on 1 and 3. once that feels comfortable, introduce the snare on 2 and 4. that should be your only goal for the week. if you're beyond that point, the same general concept still applies as you progress. aim for accuracy and proper technique - not speed. speed will come naturally with proper technique

Or do as most people actually end up doing. Have fun, play whatever and when you run into a wall, spend months correcting bad habits and learning the technique you should have been using from the start. Make the journey your own by falling into pits of your own making and crawling out of them, focusing of course on having fun along the way. Having fun while playing is the number 1 motivator to keep you coming back to play again so if something is becoming boring and feeling like a chore, look for ways to make it fun, turn it into a game or just do something else for a bit and then come back with fresh motivation.

danceability is probably the single most important thing in a groove. I know you have worship drummers in your susbcribers so I'll chuck in the comment that, for worship music, if you want to create 'worshipability in your groove, to literally move people to worship, what you're actually after is exactly the same thing as danceability.

Um, you know, Stephen, towards the end when you said you were showing different methods on the hi-hat, to be honest I could not hear or see anything different in what you were doing.
