My children gave me a Swisstool for Christmas, 1998. It has remained with me, in my pocket, in my work and play since and is still quite serviceable. I have never been without. It has seen action in every continent, at sea on my sail boat (impervious to rust and corrosion) and as part of my motorcycle tool kit. Just a few moments ago, I gave it a good cleaning and sharpened the blade, after using it to repair the automobile of a stranded motorist. There is no better multi-tool. Maybe I will replace it with an MX but why? It is still in great condition.

In my opinion; keep yours because when come to the gift itself especially from your kids it become attached to your soul just add pocket clip which is you can buy it separately. If you need one blade opening just buy lightweight Spyderco para 3 what a great knife for all conditions. Now I want Victorinox spirit because it have better corrosion/rust resistance than LM

That leather pouch, is the BEST pouch I've ever used. I carried the Spirit X everyday, in a hard enviroment in my job, for 4 years. Both the pouch and the Spirit X seen a ton of use and abuse. Both work and look day one! The leather got darker from my sweat and looks cooler! The velcro works like day one. I recommend people giving it a try first, before judging it. IT's really high quality, like the Spirit X itself is.

After 6 years of EDC carry, including with forestry and arborism fieldwork the velcro was starting to wear out on mine. And with ADHD, you know that velcro saw a lot of use!
Replaced it with a snap button and now it's a donor sheath as I lost the tool :(
Though initially due to the velcro, currently it is my belief that if you have the least bit active lifestyle (and if you don't, do you really need the Swisstool?), there is always a risk of the fastening coming undone. And that alone means I would never want a horizontal carry.
So yeah, the sheath is beauty in simplicity and functionality. Allowing for a better focus on, well, product quality. Something most other multitool companies seem to really struggle with.

@@user-zh4vo1kw1z I use mine for years. It's all day on my belt. The most years and time of use, are on a very long private beach which a 5 star hotel owns and I'm responsible for it's maintainance. I really use it all day, everyday. My sweat, the sun, all that use, the only part that holds almost like new, it's that velcro!
The Leather has a very dark colour and the lower corners are almost black, probably from the steah hiting everything I pass by, when things gets tight and I don't fit to pass properly! However,e even those small black spots, are barely noticable in person, and only if you get the sheath in your hands because they are on the bottom part of the outer corners!
Thanks for the idea, to put a snap when it finally fails! Probably I was luckier and the velcro lasted more on mine!!

I chose mx clip over wave because
    - all tools can open with out opening plier
    - mx clip has more tools (22) and wave less (18)
    - high rust resistance
    - softer steel easily to sharpen
-softer steel also will bend and not break
    - more compact
    - ergonomic handle
    - will not be pinch by the closing plier accidentally like wave
    - like the shiny finish of spirit than wave; look more elegant and cleaner
    - easier to maintain
    - clip ready there

I've made horizontal carry sheaths and when wearing them, even a relatively small one of about 7cm, if I wear them anyware but on the front or small of the back they never follow the curve of my waist, so either stick out or suffer a lot of belt tension...

hehe, i opened a new swisstool x package some weeks ago with my swisstool from 98. The new clip and the not so new plastic holder are really a gamechanger. And for anyone saying victorinox does not innovate, they beefed up the pliers, reversed them (sturdier when used anticlockwise) changed the handle action, made the file much better, all the rest was great already, ah and they made it even smoother to open and close, a feat in itself. Its a timeless classic with unmatched fit and finish, a real joy to use.

@Johnny Silverhand Having owned a Swisstool for well over a decade I have to agree, Victorinox do have an advantage in quality and fit and finish, when that tool was new it was buttery smooth, but over time the jaws on the pliers have developed a bit of slop in them and the cutter section is slightly deformed, despite the fact that i have never really used them for any rough stuff. I also own a Surge which has been borderline abused over about 4 years, and despite a few superficial rust spots everything is still rock solid, so i feel like Leatherman have the edge in ruggedness. Of course that's just my experience.

That was smart of you, buying both.
I was on the fence on which one I wanted, the X or MX, and now I think I will get both.
I can switch back and forth depending on my mood or limited belt or pocket space. I will carry the X on a belt sheath and the MX with the clip.

I don't know where I saw it, but apparently the Swiss tool series and the large Victorinox are made the way that Wenger made their Swiss Army knives and the scissors is a follow on from the wenger tradition as their scissors were much stronger than Victorinox in terms of mechanism. Just look at the wenger classic sd vs the Victorinox classic sd. Both the same, wenger a bit longer, but the same. The scissors are different.

    • @inkiron3907
      @inkiron3907  2 роки тому +1

I think you’re right. The scissors’ spring mechanism borrows tension from the main lock spring instead of a separate spring like Victorinox

  • @user-zh4vo1kw1z
    @user-zh4vo1kw1z 2 роки тому +6

The scissor seem to be an import from Wenger.
They are microserrated and self sharpening, with a sturdier spring. Wenger would advertise that they would become a functional heirloom without ever sharpening it. So basically, the only quality upgrade that was left. And one that makes sense for a multitool

Nothing in UK law prevents one hand opening. Also, non-locking, sub 3inch can be carried without needing a reason to. In the UK you can still carry and use locking blades and fixed blades of any length, as long as you have good reason to be carrying them e.g. part of work, fishing, hunting, camping etc.

I personnaly carry my Spirit in the leather sheath wich is good, but I replace the velcro with a pressure button because it wears in time and can produce some noise when using it.
I carry a second knife in my pocket which is really one handed operation knife (Spyderco para 3) because 80% use for my Spirit was basic cutting task.
I don't like the tab because the Spirit is not slick anymore but I like the clip. For those who only carry the Spirit it can be a good option. But you have less cutting edge because of this tab and the blade is not flat anymore (for some task it can be annoying)
The victorinox steel is a bit soft thus (comparing to "modern steel" as S30V or S110V, etc.) if you often use the blade you have to sharpen it often.

Nice tools. I prefer the holder vs the pocket clip personally. When its "clipped" in your pocket, unless you have tiny hands, you can't get your hand in your pocket unless you take it out. Hi, a great video. As a disabled person, I love the one-handed opening; however, the locking blade makes it non-legal for everyday carry in the UK. I could still own one and use it at home, but the whole point of a multi-tool with a pouch is to have it with you. If I wore it indoors and forgot to remove it, I could be in trouble.
May I ask a question from the video but not about the tools?
Do you have a link for a store where I might get the weighing scale you are using in the video to weigh the items?
I have tried to find "Top500" and have found a German site which lists a lot of things, but it is not easy to navigate to find the type of scale you are using. I had one that claimed to go to 0.001 of gram, but I lost it somehow when reorganising furniture. (It wasn't that accurate - a mistaken or misleading claim on Amazon.) Anyhow, a scale to .01 accuracy is perfect for most of my purposes. Thanks.

I bought that scale in 2016 and it’s been reliable. Hope that helps.
I get the need for a non-locking blade. It’s tricky to find a tool that combines good sized pliers with a non-locking blade. Maybe something like a Leatherman Bond or Curl but I don’t have personal experience with those. They would be more affordable than the SwissTool lol

I lost my swisstool a while ago, and made due with a leatherman since then.
The only thing that got me from going straight back to Victorinox was that it's extremely cumbersome to open if you have weak nails like me, something the wave is very good at. Also the modability of the wave meant I could always move in some Swisstool parts, doing away with the janky knife, useless scissors, limiting "bitholder", pointless second blade, superfluous saw, allready busted flat piece of metal thst was supposed to be a flathead screwdriver, etc.
Basically, use it as a needlenose base and only keep the file.

And the decision to only make a very few tools outside accessible really boggles me!
I started doubting the quality of the Wave (2nd version of first gen) on the way back from buying it. The fact that you have to be carefull to close it in a specific way otherwise the pliers will jam with the glasses screwdriver bit really says it all. When I found out it is nigh impossible to get the knife to hold an edge really annoys me, these things cost way too much for me to carry around a stone as well.

It's a coincidence that you are reviewing a Swisstool Spirit now because I was wondering how a Spirit would hold up in the lab environment that you work in. You said in one of your videos that your Surge has held up to everything you threw at it in the lab (I have a Surge too but don't use it) but my Leatherman Squirt that sits on my bedroom nightstand has rust spots all over. Do you clean your Leathermans? It seems to me that because of the chromated steel Victorinox uses in their knives and tools your Spirits would probably do well regardless of what chemicals they came in contact with in your lab. I have a Spirit too that's at least a decade old (that I also rarely use) and it seems it would do well with salt water at the beach and ocean fishing. Thanks for the video.
