The Soviet tech tree isn't generally known for having the best light vehicles, but the BMD-4 IFV shatters that expectation. It is the most versatile light tank in the game, being able to do just about anything. I'm surprised Gaijin hasn't nerfed it.

Fun fact, you can uses this light tank as mortar while using a scout drone if you know mathematics.
There's a similar vehicle to this, the 2S3 Nona, it's cannon works as a regular cannon and a mortar, I wish it was in the game.

@2:17 other way around. The vehicles base paint "Tan" as you call it, is painted over in the field by the crew with a cheap "whitewash" that can be easily removed later with a pressure washer. Saves a heap of cost as the base vehicle paint can be adapted for all seasons, not completely repainted 2-4 times a year.
The deliberately left "tan" patches are supposed to help break up the silhouette of the vehicle. Actually helps when you park in part shadow.

2:20, the BMD actually have dismount scatered across the vehicle, the back provide 3-4 seats, the 2 hatch you see next to the driver at the front are actually 2 seats for the dismount troop

@@squodel1051yes, in making it 3ft larger in every dimension from a BMD-2 they also made the crew door/compartment absolutely abysmal for no reason.
I think there is a drone video of BMD-4 dropping off a bunch of dismounts to reinforce a position. And it is 9 men dismounting in the video. And because BMD drives off afterwards, these 9 didn't include at least a driver.
BMD-4 only has seating for 5 dismounts so it was either a bmp or there were troops riding on top of it.

To answer your wondering of how they fit people in the back, they don’t. They just cram them all around the driver and the ammunition. There are 2 hatches, one to the left and to the right, of the driver, and there’s one big hatch in back, the one in the dip in the back. You have to climb over the engine in order to get in.
I don't understand anyway how anyone can call it an ifv, for me it is completely light tank trated like ifv, even t80 can be ifv then, just by carring trops on roof.

It’s an air portable version of the BMP-3, it has to make concessions for air portability.

2:23 - It's an air deployable light tank most of it's battlefield time. It doesn't carry soldiers at all most of the time (apart from the crew). An Mi-26 Halo can land in a field and deploy 2 BMD-4s into an area.
As explained to others, no, it's an IFV. On BMD-4, they enter through a small hatch on the back of the hull next to the turret, and basically squeeze in around the turret... in theory. In practice, typically the rest of the squad (the squad leader is also the vehicle commander until dismount, when that role is transferred to the gunner) rides on top of the engine. BMDs are not deployed without their accompanying infantry squad.
@@PandaMan-xy1he Read the comment properly. I've watched too many hours of Russian footage in Ukraine to know that BMDs often ride empty or are relegated to being Artillery with the 100mm gun.
It's supposed to carry infantry; that's what the initial design requirements and current doctrine dictate. Unfortunately, the actual design is so awful for dismounts that they usually don't bother.

Attempt number 44 at getting Spookston to play any tank with a dozer blade, the catch is, he has to dig in before engaging targets. Movement around the map is allowed, but he has to dig in again before reengaging.
strf9040 BILL is also very versatile : apfsds auto cannon + missiles slinger + HEVT for aa ofc full stab and sometimes stupidly survivable

2:20 It's cute that you think transported troops should fit "in" the back. Check out photos from 2008 Victory parade. Turns out that out of 5 transported troops (5 beside the crew itself) only 2 are "in". The remaining 3 are "on" the bmd. Betweeen the cut in part of the rear and the turret, there is this weird angled part that even has hinges modeled in game. Turns out there are 3 seats for infantry hidden there

Attempt 35 Challenge: For high tier support a nations MBT with its respective APC/IFV counterpart (ie Abrams/Bradley, T90/BMP2M, etc.) Challenge is keeping the other player alive and supporting it without stealing kills (breaking barrels, tracking, repairing, etc) it being a random should help make it interesting.

Troops in BMD-4 are placed right behind a turret, between turret and ebgine, in a half-laying position. It can fit 6 troops, one of which is in sideways position. I can only imagine how inconvenient it to be in that position, especially when you need to dismount vehicle xd

2:25 in the most insane way, the dismounts exit from the hatch in the back (the angled bit just behind the turret) and crawl over the engine deck before dropping to the ground.
Definitely something you'd like to do in combat, just like how half the dismounts in BTRs GET OUT FROM THE SIDES OF THE THING WITH ZERO COVER.
Imagine if the Bradley had its dismounts jump out the sides.
The BMD is different from the BMP in that it doesn’t actually hold any troops. That’s why it’s so much faster, it doesn’t need extra shit for people. There might be a little bit of room but I don’t even think so. It’s literally just for fighting infantry without holding any friendlies
I usually play that with HE as primary ammo and ATGMs for things that actually need them. HE sniping cupolas and drivers' hatches is quite fun.
I remembered when this thing come out and it have a bug where you can have more than 4 missile…it probably the most op thing that exist at that time… I remembered killing like 5 spawn camping dude under 1 minute

The BMD-4 has become an endangered species IRL. Those French optics and stabilizer only helps so much when you have 40mm of steel on your face and an autocannon that is 3MOA in theory and more like 10MOA in practice.
Mr Spooky you can actually bring more 30mm ammo, it's just that you're limited to only 1 APDS belt. You can still bring a three quarters APT belt as well if you want another 250 rounds for killing light stuff. My favourite memories in this thing were getting completely behind cover, using my commander fire control (with heaps of zoom) to laser rangefind and lob HE at people. Ridiculous fun tank, too bad it completely makes the BMP3 redundant.

I remember when this was first introduced and it got like 20+ missiles and VERY short reload on them, like 1-2 seconds at most.
When you mention it being an IFV, you have to consoder that it’s airdroppable so carrying troops isn’t biggest priority
Her spookerton, you probably do know the answer but the answer to your question about the bmd 4 not having space for troops is because it was made for airborne operations so it had to lose lose size to git into transport planes

BMD is less like an IFV and more just a light autocannon thats meant to support paratroopers, any ability to carry infantry is just secondary purpose to the fire support role

Hey Spook! Apparently what they do is cram the 5 dismounts in a semi-circle directly around the turret basket, then they flip that hatch directly behind the turret to get out.
I bought her off the marketplace the first day I started playing Warthunder and since then she's made up half my kills. The Bastian missile is very potent but it doesn't have the same feel as most other ATGMs, all my muscle memory for missiles is keyed to them now and now I can't land ATGM shots with anything else.

Tan on winter camo makes sense (in war thunder, not sure about irl). I took the first event EBR out in a winter map with the special desert camo, parked on top of a hill in the middle of the map, and sat there for over half the match. Got like 8 kills and 10 scout assists before someone noticed me. 😂
The BMD-4 is the dude with a marvelous hog that is still just a 2 pump chump.

I remember when the BMD-4 first came out it had 2 different rockets (one was stock the other was researchable) and you could double dip and have 8 total rockets. It was nice, sadly and thankfully they "fixed" it by removing one of the rockets.
One of the only tanks I grinded to get in this game, and honestly it is the most fun thing to drive after centauro
you should bind the secondary gun button to the special gun button like on conventional ifv, so you can fire the atgm while firing the auto cannon, but switch to secondary gun on some button (like the fifth mouse button) if you want to use the cannon
Before Armored Warfare went downhill the BMD-4 was one of my favorite light vehicles to play. Just like the War Thunder edition, it was fast and versatile and so much fun.
