So, you can avoid having to use forexample two 9V batteries, and get away with a couple of doubl As instead. That is wort one pound. (I see theese cost one pound from my usual supplier. Cheaper on e-bay I suppose.) (To those who are not aware, Max232 is for translating between TTL and serial.)

The diodes in the schematic at 2:40 are 1N4148 switching diodes.
