- A young girl lives in a bunker.
MONSTERS is used with permission from Steve Desmond. Learn more at dreamingants.com.
Jenn lives in an underground bunker with her family, protected from the monsters roaming the world above. She has never been outside -- her entire life has been spent underground with mother Marie, father Henry and her brother Isaac, who all regularly go up to the surface to get food and resources to keep them alive.
Jenn wants to go with them, and she even practices with her wooden sword to prepare. But one day, tired of being told she's too young to go up, she sneaks out and discovers something even more terrifying than she could ever imagine.
Writer-director Steve Desmond -- along with co-writer Michael Sherman -- has conceived a fresh, inventive horror short that uses every element in the cinematic toolbox to create a compelling, effective storytelling experience about growing up, taking risks and being curious about the larger world beyond your childhood.
With its tautly paced storytelling and editing, its ability to parse out just enough details to create a whole world, its terrific set of performances -- including SAY ANYTHING actress Ione Skye as the mother -- and its excellent score and sound design, this short feels much bigger in scale than its short runtime.
The dynamimc camerawork is able to evoke a world outside the bunker that is much larger than its dark confines, and each propulsive story beat is created with immense skill and craftsmanship, powered by young Jenn's desire to go outside. As she makes it outside, the camera movement and other elements also increase in scale, ratcheting up the tension and questions that drive Jenn along.
Jenn's character is deftly drawn, and her drive to go outside is understandable. She may be young, but her character is active and resourceful, brought to life in a capable, excellent performance by young actor Caitlin Carmichael, who delineates every emotional beat of Jenn with precision and specificity. But the time she makes it outside, she discovers something much different than the story about monsters she has grown up with.
Like many horror films, there's a terrific twist at the film's conclusion that recasts the narrative we thought we knew, inviting compulsive rewatching. And like other films in its genre, MONSTERS is also a powerful parable about the sometimes difficult moment of shedding childhood beliefs when confronted with the truths of the larger world beyond childhood.
This being a thrilling horror movie, these realizations comes with a dose of harsh reality, emotional agony and the shattering of childhood innocence -- not to mention a sickening realization that the bigger world of adulthood we longed for so much is actually an illusion and a trap.

When they make a horror short about china's one child policy
Except that's not even remotely close to how its enforced in china. Mostly its just a financial penalty on the family, even in extreme cases it was just mandatory contraception and sterilization (such as a IUD) parents could refuse but would loose access to government facilities/jobs.
But I think they have good reason to use that idea.
If China's population grow so much, you think where they will go? Look at what happened with Europe and Syria refugees.
China ended their one-child policy in favor of a two-child policy. The government now favors two children. Exactly two children.
Fun fact: The guy introduced one child policy, was the same pro-democratic communist guy college students and Beijing workers supported in Tiananmen Square massacre.

@don't care The one-child policy has been abolished in favor of a two-child policy. It also doesn't apply, and never applied, in the autonomous areas of the country. Wealthy people were always able to pay a fine and have a second child. Finally, abolishing the one-child policy isn't going to solve China's declining population challenges. The monster within.
Maus Girl same
"There is no such thing like monster"
Cause human is monster itself
@@oliverkat sorry
Maybe there was a misunderstanding in the words I wrote. So let me explain. It's true that not all humans are monsters, but that depends on how you look at it. For me personally, humans are divided into two namely, the good and the bad but no matter which, both have a dark and bright side in themselves, this dark and bright side determines whether a person is a devil or an angel. Take it easy, not all monsters are evil. Because most of them are only labeled as monsters by the people because of their appearance, not their inside. If they are strong enough to accept that pressure then they will forever not turn into monsters like people say, but the opposite will happen if they succumb to that pressure so don't do anything bad to those who don't even have the slightest mistake because it could be we are the real monsters. Sorry if what I say is too long and might take up a lot of your time but at least I can correct the misunderstanding and sorry if there are mistakes in my writing, my English is not realy good.

Couldn't the parents have like separated, and had like one child each?🤔 Also, they could have dressed the boy as a girl and then had child rotation system 🤣🤣
Lol I thought these things too 😂

Why did they even have Jen in first place? If she wouldn’t have been born she wouldn’t even had to endure this, like if the parents had known this why did they bring the child to the world?
Yeah, but wouldn’t that still break the rules since they still technically have 2 children’s

Well, that's technically because she was in the dark for so long, in the basement. Her eyes weren't so adjusted to the light yet. Like when you're outside all day in the sun, and then you finally go somewhere so suddenly dark, it takes a bit for your eyes to adjust to the environment.
*stabs paper* "I'm ready to take on god" *gets clapped by a monster*
XD XD XD
Even funnier is the fact she got clapped by a monster without being outside the "bunker." Absolute trash tier survivalist, the government is just nature exercising survival of the fittest.

Anyone watching this during COVID 19 lockdown?
Why care about that? And anyone else that dislikes these idiotic reminders that we are in lockdown?

That’s a really good way to Describe how horrible one child policy is dam.
What country is this in
I’m confused
@@shanehannigan7895 China
Actually, in China, "seconds" just didn't get to use free government healthcare, education, and living accommodations. Well, and parents were fined. And some people got sterilized. And there were enforced contraception protocols. Anyway, I'm pretty sure they didn't actually take children away from their families in a violent fashion.
@@arcuscerebellumus8797 I'm not so sure about that. My best friend is a Chinese 2nd child. Her parents only got a fine. She is able to use government services just the same as anybody else. Doubt her parents were sterilized or forced to use contraceptives, as she has a younger sibling too.

Everyone here like: "Chinas one child policy"
If they wouldn't be lying to that kid and tell her straight up the truth... but yeah I get it, it's needed for the twist in the end...
Ema Pelikánová zdar more
Ema Pelikánová If they told her a lie and she didn’t listen why would she listen if told the truth.?
She grew up thinking there were monsters. From birth. So it would make sense that she wo[ld just stay there in the bunker until her curiosity strikes in.
It wasn't needed for the twist at the end it was used because it was the right thing to do, if you told her the truth that the three of you get to live a great life while she is locked in a box and only sees her parents once or twice a week then she will start to resent you and will be even more determined to break out. I can't understand how so many people don't get this concept and keep saying "They should have told the truth!".
All I could think about when she was mad and destroying the bunker was *D*MN they have a really nice kitchen.*
There’s actually a book series about this. It’s called the shadow children but the limit is 2 children not 1.
Edit:the third children know though
Really good series.
What about ender games? Limit is 2 too
NoneIt China real life also
How many books are in that series? A friend loaned me three. Wasnt sure if there were more.
@@ariesradke6193 they relax that policy in 2013. And worst thing that will happen is a fine

Return to the dying rooms, told us about the one child policy.
"We all love you jenn, more than you'll ever know"
This is so relatable to the book called “among the hidden”
And the girl is even named jen one of the characters in the book.
yeah but they never said anything about being a fall out with monsters
I can never enjoy stories where telling the protagonist the truth would be so much easier & effective than a convoluted ruse.
Watch "One Child Nation." About China's one child policy and what happened to the extra kids.
the extra child will be turned to the military were they will learn and become soldiers
This policy already ended. I guess China realizes their mistake.
