Forehead slap!!!! What a great tip. "Seasoned' sewers have been taught for so long to baste, yada yada yada, and here you are with this incredibly simple solution. So we're out here thinking 'why didn't I think of that'. Lol. Not only that, but what great practice for setting up your serger for the chain stitch. So many possibilities for sergers. Thank you! :)

Having a sewing machine that does a chain stitch (Singer Touch and Sew) and not wanting to give it up, yet buying a five thread serger which includes a cover and chain stitch, it’s refreshing to know the special tips to using the chain stitch on my five thread.

Hi Beth, The chain stitch is excellent for lots of applications and it's also a beautiful embellishment stitch with heavier weight decorative thread in the chain looper. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips!

Before beginning, put a thread net around the elastic thread spool. Use Serger cone thread in the needle and elastic thread in the looper. You’ll have to do a bunch of tests to get the tension correct -lower it on the looper-it’s different for every machine. Stitch length should be 3.5-4.0. Let me know your results and if you need more help.
    Thanks!

Thank you for this tip! I have a chainstitch machine and have always started from the other end, only to become frustrated. Now I think I could use two different color threads to identify which is the looper and which is the needle, so that its easier to remove.

Beth P you’ll find that the looper thread is always on the underside of the fabric as you stitch. If you pull the stitches out and they “lock up” before you get to the end, just pull the needle thread back to where the looper thread stopped, then continue pulling the looper thread. It should unlock it and you can remove the rest of the stitching. Thanks for watching Serger Tip Clips! Subscribe to my UA-cam channel (it’s free) and you’ll be notified when I post a new video.

I would definitely secure a seam (especially one that is prone to stress like a side seam on clothing) with either a 3-thread or 4-thread overlock stitch. But for a temporary seam to check and adjust fitting, the chain stitch is fabulous. And as I mentioned in the video, removing it doesn't mar or stress the fabric. Glad to hear from you again😊! Thanks for watching.

would you then go over and do a 4 thread overlock to secure the garment for finishing, or will that chain stitch be secure? Thanks.

Forgot to mention that differential feed should be increased to 2.

how do you do a stretch chain stitch? I've seen shirring using elastic thread on the inside using the chain stitch.
