I love that he kept going! He didn't allow anyone to harsh his mellow, and he's still at it, making music, entertaining crowds, and having a great time! 100/10 Afroman!
If you played "because I got high" or "colt 45" at any house party in the early 2000s the entire crowd would go wild, that's how you know you are involved in something special. It doesn't matter if afroman has only 2 songs that people really know of, it's about what he represents just as much as the music, the time, the era, the weed, the nostalgia. I'm happy he's still alive and doing well in 2022. It's a tough world out there especially these days. Stay safe guys
You play those songs today and people still go crazy and sing every word. People from all walks of life know his songs because he’s just such an iconic and all around good guy. He should be bigger than 99% of mainstream artists of this time.
This documentary gave me such new found and utmost respect for Afroman. He is a true artist and cutting his ties to the universal label was one of those pivotal moments that solidified it for him, what he wanted out of this music venture.
I was a junior in high school, going into senior year, this song was awesome. we were smoking weed and watching Jay and silent Bob strike back on repeat. What a time to be alive.
Some women need some sense knocked into them. Some women feel like they are entitled to more than others just because they are pretty. Lol, some guys also feel that way.
That's definitely saying something about his energy if it's infectious even when he's high af. Mans is on an entirely different plane of existence from the rest of us and I can only wish for that kind of enlightenment.
I got to interview Afroman when I was in college years ago and he was great to chat with. I had called him for the interview and missed him....he called back and left a voicemail singing "I was gonna call you sooner, but then I got high!" Really cool dude. This was one example of how the early mp3 file sharing made someone's career. Everyone had this song downloaded from Limewire or Kazaa and heard it when they wouldn't have otherwise.
I remember seeing him perform in Destin FL (I forget the name of the club, right by the beach) on 4/20/08. The outside area was a cloud of smoke, this was well before weed was any resemblance of legal in FL. The Cops were swarming that place in full force at the end of the night. Needless to say I saw him perform a few songs and dipped, I couldn't partake considering I was active duty attending EOD School at Eglin AFB down the road. Hard to believe that's been over 14 years ago.
@@FentanylPopsicle how do you feel when you watch the video of him extending his arm back fully and launching that ferocious punch to the womans face, flying to the ground. Is it all just fine to you?
One of the most immortalized stoner songs sung by such a jovial spirit which hasn't lost its spark, and everytime you hear it you just want to light up a joint/ blunt get high and sing along to this masterpiece of music
I will never forget the day I got high with Afroman and played an opening set for his performance at my hometown bar. Hands down one of my favorite moments in life. Afterwards I invited him to my studio to record some material and hangout. Still to this day I have his bars on my laptop that I think will never get released.... Because we got high
Wesley Willis asked me to open the pill bottles for his schizophrenia meds at the bar before he went on stage at a show in a small club back in the 90's so I can definitely relate to your story

Tim Ramenofsky is an absolute legend. Selling local records out of the shop AND brining in people to record? This dude truly has a passion and shares it, you cannot ask for better. You’re a hero Tim.
To say this song is far reaching is an understatement. I live in a small town in Africa and I was listening to Afroman when I was in high-school. Still a huge part of my history.
Mad respect to the Afroman for standing true to the essence of who he truly is rather than letting big record company manipulate it. Afroman is happy when he’s making other people happy with his music, and that what he continues to do!
Afroman has so many hits. It's sad that people only remember because I got high. Put on his album and let it play my boy Richard taught me that. R.I.P Richard. 👊
I always liked the song. And I'm not a weed smoker, never smoked weed lol. But it's still relatable because it's about getting nothing done because of procrastination or being distracted by something you would much rather be doing. Sometimes the best lessons are wrapped in jokes.
You really should try it once and listen to it. Alcohol is way worse than weed on every system in your body including your brain. If youll drink a beer you can definitely smoke a joint
My son turned me on to this song when he was twelve, and I laughed my butt off! Now my son is 31 and we often smoke a few bowls after dinner while watching Star Trek reruns. Back then, neither of us smoked the "Devil's Lettuce", but when I found that it reduces the pain of trigeminal neuralgia, the very painful neurological disease I have, then I started medicating with it. Back in 2004 when my pain was off the charts, my doctor prescribed Fentanyl patch to control the pain, but that crap made me very sick. I've been prescribed anti-seizure meds that affected my memory and ability to function so adversely that I forgot how to drive a car or operate common tools. One drug caused severe allergic reaction where I had blisters all over me. Cannabis affects memory, but nothing like the pharmaceuticals do. My disease is a brain disorder that is related to epileptic seizures. Cannabis has proven to be an effective treatment for epilepsy. It seems to prevent most seizures from occurring or lessens the severity. It gave me my life back! A friend in Texas has a young daughter who is epileptic. Her seizures were so severe and frequent the poor little girl had to stop attending school. My friend read about a girl in Colorado whose epilepsy was very similar to her daughters. This girl was treated by a special strain of cannabis called Charlotte's Web, which is high-cannabidiol, low-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and doesn't make one "high" like traditional weed since it's low in THC. It's a CBD product made from hemp. Of course, living in Texas she couldn't buy this medicine for her daughter even though it's CBD. Her daughter had a severe seizure that put her in the hospital and nearly ended her, and that was the last straw. My friend decided to move to Colorado to save her baby girl! It's working very well, and she's now attending public school, making good grades and lots of friends.
"They say your a one hit wonder, well how many hits do you need?" that means he's good spiritual and financially because of just one song that makes him feel happy every time he raps it that's amazing!!!
Happy he is living out his dreams without the pressure of mainstream success. I wish more of these one hit wonder stories were like this, where the artist gets to live off that song and while enjoying a private life with no regrets.
She is correct but he did it !! and reaping the success. Sometimes It not how complex a thing is, but who is willing to show up and get something done!
My sister met Afroman at a club/bar, he's such a down to earth person. He did a video for my dads birthday just because she said it was his birthday. He's brought so much light to cannabis and I think he had a big impact on destigmatizing weed culture in the early 2000's. So great to see how far weed laws have changed over the years In the states. Afroman will always be be played in the playlist for the kickbacks, colt 45 personally is what got me on to Afroman and is for sure my favorite song. Every listen is a smile and a good time no matter what mood I'm. Thank you Afroman. And thank you vice for a one of a kind documentary.

I was a 10 year old boy when I heard because I got high for the first time. I was on holiday with some family friends on the wild coast of South Africa (where smoking marijuana is a very popular past time). I just remember one evening after a braai (barbecue) and lots of drinking all the adults really enjoying and laughing at this song. Us kids laughed as well, not knowing what its all about but just seeing the joy around this song I always remember that positive memory. Because I got high travelled with me through my later university years when I started experimenting with marijuana, particularly in my post grad years. It has and will always be a positive and uplifting piece of music to me. Thanks Afroman.
I used to listen to this when I was still straight edge. It's just a song that helps you deal with stuff, it's upbeat against adversity. It's inherently adverse, it's doing something that is illegal(was illegal back then still is lots of places)to deal with life's problems. Future generations wont remember what it was like, the shame and risk it used to be to go to a party, or meet new people, and navigate around smoking. Hide behind the shed, hope you don't ask the wrong person who calls the cops, hope you don't get judged. That culture will be lost on future generations. Just getting green back in the day was dangerous. And I was a misanthrope(without it), so I had to be social and ask people for help getting something illegal. It was rough, songs like this just made it fun. made you feel more comfortable. Playing a song like this used to be a small protest, with a great beat. Still love this song. Had no idea he was such a good singer either.
Lonely people enjoy being alone, because social interactions take a lot of work and at its core, its a downfall. Believe me. There is a difference between living alone and choosing loneliness.
5 minutes in and this is already GOLD to me. Please do more like these! Shout out Afro man, every kid that I grew up with knew the lyrics. We'd watch Jay n Silent Bob strike back just to see the music video at the end. Great song, it's going in the time capsule.

@@jamesjameson4566 yeah wasn't cool of him to punch someone, but the act was more reactive than malicious. I found an article online from NME by Luke Morgan Britton, describing "Afroman, real name Joseph Edgar Foreman, was playing guitar onstage when a woman approached him from behind and danced against him, at which point he turned around and punched her with his right hand.". Not saying that he should've punched her, but I think it's reasonable to speculate maybe Afroman didn't know who just came up behind and started grabbing him, and reacted swiftly. I'm not trying to ride Afroman's dick, but don't make it seem like it's something it's not. Also, its a pretty well known fact as a fan you don't just jump on stage cause you feel like it. People who, uninvitationally, go on stage during a show usually get roughed up because how are people suppose to know if this random person is a mega-fan or someone trying to hurt them for clout or publicity (xxxtentacion, Pantera, Ski Mask, and I assume others have had the latter happen to them)
@@devinhiett7341 why are you reading articles on it, there's a video, and it was what it was, a dark hearted, evil person acting out some extreme violence against a very small woman, evil and cowardly. He had plenty of time to react, he had plenty of time to pull his arm all the way back to really give it the full force, he put his whole body in to it, he also found her face quite easily, meaning he knew exactly who he was punching, so that... I didn't see it stuff... Doesn't fly (she did though) Also he immediately gets back to playing his guitar, like it never happened, there was no threat, perceived or otherwise and there was certainly no remorse

There is so much value in this video! It shows you that it doesn’t have to be complicated, keeping it simple sometimes is best. Also almost everyone knows this and Colt 45! They will forever be classics! He is happy and proud of his success! More people should be proud of their success and realize you don’t have to be on top of the world to be happy.
I remember being a college student at Mississippi State and we all knew African songs… not just one but multiple. Then a year later I’m listening to the radio and Afroman is number one. It was crazy and really cool to be a part of watching him at Ricks to seeing him on TV
This came out around the time I was graduating high-school and not only does it always have a spot in my heart. Its also a album that can make you happy/change your mood. Everyone needs some afroman in they life!
Sounds like you're a graduate of 99-04 HS Era 5oo? There's a lot of really neat things these days... new music, cool tech, some musics even showed me how silly and aggressive so much music was in the years 00-10, and how even in sea of shitty pop music that we loved to hate, there were still some gems that have stood the test of time... ... but man... something about graduating prior to 2005 was just cool and comfortable in a way that doesn't exist anymore. Those formative years right in the height of the 90s, when the horizon was wide open, everything was looking up, tech seemed hopeful more than today's scammy conflict filled echo-chambers and insta-(role)models... Napster making things feel at our fingers... Google just starting to make its name and sticking to "don't be evil"... a weird time between house phones and pocket workstations. The best of the 90s, and the first to never see the adult political, media, economic, social world not having been rocked by 9/11. I'd love to know about people's formative years and HS from all time periods, but the only ones I'm a little jealous of are those who graduated between 96-2000, who got to see the real world before 9/11 reconfigured everything

"good things happen when you're alone" Definitely a statement that goes against the social grain, but a statement that I, someone who makes art can relate to. Loneliness is pain, but loneliness can be the catalyst that some of us use to make art. Thank you Afroman
You're wrong, he's talking about being alone, not loneky. I love being alone, it's invigorating and the world has endless possibilities. You're making it sound all sad.
As a Fellow Artist myself, I can fully agree with with your last statement. Loneliness is pain and pain can either make or break you but one thing that's garenteed is the crazy artistic outcome that comes with it

Every time this dude played our club up in Starkville he killed it. Was always a chill night for security and it was always packed. Keep it up Joseph!

Us kids laughed as well, not knowing what its all about but just seeing the joy around this song I always remember that positive memory. It has and will always be a positive and uplifting piece of music to me. Thanks Afroman.
This song was played at my cousins funeral sitting in the Chapel it was a fitting tribute even the priest didn't mind
@@jamesjameson4566 yeah wasn't cool of him to punch someone, but the act was more reactive than malicious.
People who, uninvitationally, go on stage during a show usually get roughed up because how are people suppose to know if this random person is a mega-fan or someone trying to hurt them for clout or publicity (xxxtentacion, Pantera, Ski Mask, and I assume others have had the latter happen to them)
@@devinhiett7341 why are you reading articles on it, there's a video, and it was what it was, a dark hearted, evil person acting out some extreme violence against a very small woman, evil and cowardly. ... but man... something about graduating prior to 2005 was just cool and comfortable in a way that doesn't exist anymore. I met him last summer when he came to Panama City Beach to do a show. He’s the nicest most chill guy you could ever wanna meet! Let us get all the pics we wanted with him and even sat at the bar and talked to him for a little bit. He deserves nothing but happiness!
My cousin used to play this music every morning when we wake up and we didn’t understand what “getting high” mean since we were just kid but we liked it so much we sang it every time we hear it. Sadly my cousin passed away three years ago. And every time I hear this song reminds me of him, he will be missed and memories of this song ❤️
Type afroman punches women in face, see how many love hearts you have for this this evil man
Yeah it’s crazy how emotionally connected people and certain songs and become, I have a couple similar examples of this with a friend who overdosed and one who was killed by a drunk driver.
This little documentary put me in a great mood. Fantastic stuff Vice.
This man's happiness is super contagious
*Loner? Now you are speaking my language. Afroman is funny, authentic and just*
*cool. What an icon. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this video tonight because*
*his laughter and passion for life will keep me going for awhile! I can't get the smile*
*off my face.* 😋😎
The fact that Kevin Smith gave credit where credit was due was amazing.
This man is a national treasure
I don't even smoke weed that's one of if not my favorite song of all time. I literally smiled the entire time watching this video just seeing how incredibly joyful Afroman, Joseph seems makes me happy inside
i hate weed but love the song too! i love the mellowness and chill vibes
@@theWanAndOnly why do u hate it
The whole album is great, not just that song. I still sing a lot of those songs in my head to this day.
Palmdale is a slapper
@@BlueCollarMafia palmdale, come back to me, i need you and i love you! and also "please tale me back home, to mississippi". i sing those songs in my head all the time. my man.
Now it was just sun down in a small white town, I call it east side Palmdale
“Bacardi! Colt45! Let’s party, we’re still alive! Tomorrow, bring pain in sorrow but tonight we’re alright!” Ohhh man, the ‘Let’s All Get Drunk’ song reminds me of high school, 2002/2003 days in the summer 😆
"I lived happily ever after" is one of the most powerful lines of a man who set his life to his own terms. What a delightful man and artist. Thanks for making this documentary to a song I remembered, but without much context. I'm not going to live his life, since I set my own terms too; but I can't say I don't envy him.
This is my favorite documentary to smoke some bowls to. Afroman is just such a chill guy, incredibly refreshing to see somebody so normal, just feels like hanging out and telling stories. No unnecessary dramatics, just homie being a homie
Yeah this song was incredible he reached so many people.. at the time I had come from New Zealand lived in London meet a Polish girl went to a small town in Poland and started a night club and even In that small town they loved that song couldn't speak much English but all sang the song! When it was blasted it was uniting in such a fun way.. Cheers AfroMan!
Just hosted him in Vancouver last Wednesday! It was such a vibe. He had the club packed and everyone was singing along. Great vibes! Highly recommend seeing his live show.
Are you able to show the content would love to see
Did he sucker punch another girl in the face??????
I loved Afromans albums. Man I swear I know the words to almost every song.
“I wanna go where nobody’s knows my name”
I was born 1997 and heard Afromans 'Because I got high' like two months ago for the first time. I am really happy he is doing so well! :)
Man! This was produced so well. This man has such big energy! He's been working with and putting on a lot of independent artists. We got to perform with him on his 'Smokelahoma Tour'.. his passion for what he does is inspirational. He really is every bit of this irl. Much respect!!!

Props to the team for dropping this gem, people needed to know of this mans talent and genuine personality.
This great man's take on loneliness just flipped my mind upside down. I didn't think it was possible to be a loner and still be happier than when not alone but I related to his explanation so much when I heard it. What an absolutely wonderful person Afroman man is.
I also didn't expect to click on this video and watch the whole thing. Amazing production quality from Vice to let this man tell his story his way and not stand in the way.
One of my favorite stories y’all have put out in a while honestly. I didn’t realize how happy for Afroman I could be:’)
Check out the Dark side of the ring stuff. I thought it was good and I'm not even really into wrestling.
Can you watch afroman punches woman on stage and get back to me with that same energy?
@@jamesjameson4566 still happy it was a solid punch.

Dude is living the Life with ONE HIT… I Love it ….
They say 1 hit but crazy rap was big too. 2 hit wonder
Ye like this other dude says crazy rap was a kinda hit but honestly listen to the album, i dont care for hits i care for good tunes and that album is a classic lol palmdale is class
Colt 45 is also a classic definitely a big hit
After a decade of being a subscriber, finally I’m getting the hard (blunt) hitting journalism I’ve been looking for.
I was going to click the ‘like’ button, but then I got high.
If you want hard hitting, see what he did to that female fan who just wanted to get up in stage and show her appreciation for the music

This guy's energy makes you feel just as good as his song! LOVE

@@MissDarlaDeville have you seen the video where he punches the petite female fan across the stage with such ferocity it renders her an unconscious crumpled mess on the floor

@James Jameson.. Why do you keep purposely writing false stuff that isnt true??.. She jumped on stage n started harassing him. She got "Slapped", not punched.. And she got right back up, "she wasnt unconscious".. 😂😂😂

I legit sang this in a karaoke bar in Japan with my ex-wife's relatives right there in the room. Until that moment I had only heard the radio version. All I can say is that I'm glad English is not their first language because... Oh, boy! Some of those lyrics are 😲
😂😂😂😂😂😂
My dad had also only ever heard the radio version. We were at a kareoke bar in Portugal and he decided he'd get up and sing BIGH. I'll never forget his face after the "I was gonna make love to you" line.
@@vansittart4551 honestly I usually harmonize over it with a friend, since it's 2 girls singing it every body lets it go and sings "because I got high" while we riff. Fun times.
What I like about the song is that you can relate to it even if you don't smoke weed. How many times have you gone to do something and got distracted by something else? The TV, the radio, your phone, answering the door? And then that thing never gets done. It's a great song!
I remember when he sang this song to me and his cousin. We laughed the whole time. He named us ghetto twins because she and I were born hours apart in different states he's an awesome dude
Thats sick when and where was this ?
That’s awesome
THIS WAS THE BEST SONG all of my secondary school years lol. We used 'ah because I got high' as a running joke for everything. 😆
In July 2021 I saw Afroman eating at a Cracker Barrel in Las Vegas. His crew & the waitresses sang happy birthday to him, then he took pics with all of them. Genuine smiles the whole time. Seemed like a really chill, laid back dude, and this just confirms it.
I met him after a show in Sacramento, he's a really cool guy
me and my middle school best friends loved getting on the dial up family computer and looking up this music video and just letting it play on repeat for hours. at that point we smoked weed but i don’t think any of us had experienced being stoned yet, but we loved this song and we loved afroman. i still love afroman. hearing his laugh brings back some good memories. i’m glad he lived happily ever after. thanks for this documentary i didn’t know i needed.
This seems like a song worth remembering for a long period of time. We get to see the entire process unfold and how songwriting itself can get a little bit tricky to piece together in the end. It’s just inspiring to see these people achieve their full potential through the art of making music.
Have a look at the process unfolding of him punching that women unconscious, for being a fan and dancing on stage. How do you like that process!
@@jamesjameson4566 why dude? Do you feel better about yourself now that you brought that up? SMH…

I may have forgotten the DJ that did it, but I’ll never forget that a DJ from 106.1KissFM got fired for continually playing the song for over an hour! My sister, her friends and I were all sitting around playing board games and PC games and couldn’t believe the song was stuck on repeat but we didn’t give AF! This song is timeless 😂

I'm from Finland and somehow I've heard this song so many times... not for a decade or two, but it brings back memories. My brother used to do DJ gigs, so I guess he must have had a record and I remember the lyrics were funny :)
I met Afroman in Dayton TN. It’s a small ass town, to see him there we where like “what!?” He has a friend that owned a bar and some other businesses there. Afroman is a chill dude. Good meeting you!
One thing I love about this song is that he never tells you exactly what happens when he get's high, he only tells you the end result.

When we were kids we would sing this song almost religiously...
It sounds stupid but I still cry when I sing " A E I O U.... AND SOMETIMES W!!!!"

But there is never really an easy way to get the news...
A looooong story behind my friends death but the short answer is/was: PTSD from actions committed in military cause him to shoot himself.
I had a missed call from him.
He had called at 3:17am and I was sleeping.... next morning I got the news from his crying mother...
My first brush with a loved one dying...
Needless to say, I'd call his phone everyday for that month just to hear his voice mail.
More of a brother to me than my own blood.
I miss that fucker every day...
The dreams with him were the worse too, because you wake up and realize none of its real...

Slow, steady and keep the shell rock hard and healthy, so the damage life throws slides right off.

Good for him. I remember enjoying this as a kid and now, every so often at parties. Im glad Afroman is well and happy.
I met Afroman about 12 years ago outside a bar in Fargo ND before one of his performances. Super down to earth and funny AF. I hope that our paths cross again someday.
That album was incredible though!Everyone thinks it’s just because I got high but there’s banger after banger on there.
