Finally. But please don't stop here. True Colors, Money, and Time After Time, must be analyzed. She's a living icon and exemplifies the radio of my childhood.
Elizabeth - a vote for 'Time After Time' here. Cindi had a voice we wanted to hear; she took us to a safe place. The vulnerability and pathos found in 'Time After Time' take us somewhere else, very moving.
To be fair, she also had a voice that was *really* expressive singing about masturbation. I think people don't remember just how scandalous she was. (And I loved her for it.)
Yes!!! Excellent points… That high pitched fun stuff was just part of her shtick from growing up in Brooklyn/Queens. (I wasn’t a big fan of that choice, but I still recognized her talent)… Fortunately she has so much more than that… And not just the perfect pitch and her “powerful and distinctive four-octave singing range”. That woman has crazy control of her voice… She can harmonize with almost any voice. Her cover of Unchained Melody is insanely awesome… Her sheer talent is incredible… She wrote/composed the music for Kinky Boots (Broadway Musical), and she has been a trail blazer in a lot of areas since she began. Lauper is under appreciated by so many people that just don’t know what they are missing.
Met Cindy in 1983 when she was really blowing up. Between her music and association with the wrestling community she was becoming quite a big star. She invited me and my partner to a wedding reception of her friend that was happening a few houses down on Venice Blvd. I was having a garage sale and playing my guitar to attract cool folks to the offerings. She was the nicest human you'd ever want to meet. Took us around the party and even gave the love of my life a small gift. It was part of a hand painted gourd with two deer doing what deer do when they are making future fawns. A beautiful keepsake from a beautiful woman. Wonderful reaction as usual, much love to you and the family...one

ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT is another fantastic Cyndi Lauper song that I think you would love deep diving into. And there are plenty of live videos of her performing it, where as other songs of hers you may wish to stick to the music videos. Her voice is TRULY special and very charismatic!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
This was a big MTV favorite. Her mom in the video was really Cyndi Lauper's real mom and her dad was Captain Lou Albano of WWF. Also, "True Colors" and "Time After Time" are her masterpieces.

So happy you finally did Cyndi! I was young in the 80s living in England. My friends and I were big metal/rock fans (ACDC, Saxon, etc). Music is an essential in my life, like water and food, and though I was given the soul of a nightingale I was also given the voice of a crow when singing. I appreciate music everyday.
Thank you for doing the video along with the song. Every 80s song should be done this way. This is how we were introduced to the songs and it formed the impressions we had of our music.
I agree!!!! The videos from the MTV era are a must!!! I grew up as a teen in the 80s, and I'm soooooooo thankful for it!!! Graduation Class of '89 here!
A great analysis of this great artist, thank you so much for getting around to her. To continue with Cyndi's stuff I recommend, "True Colours" which shows a very different side of her vocals.
I've seen this video dozens of times since it came out and never noticed that there was a conehead in the back of the room. And there was also a guy that looked a bit like Dieter Meier from Yello.
I love Cyndi Lauper so much! She's the reason I started listening to rock n roll. When her song Time After Time first came out, I asked my brother What kind of music is this?!? He said rock n roll (because the terms pop, soft pop, and soft rock hadn't been invented yet). I said If this counts as rock, I'll give it at chance, and I started listening to a rock station just to hear her song again (and heard so many others along the way). :) Thank you for your analysis of Cyndi's voice! I loved hearing it. =) Jewel starting her singing career as a kid yodeling, and you can definitely hear it in her voice when she sings many of her songs. If you've never listened to her, I'd recommend starting with Who Will Save Your Soul; play her video with the close captioning on and you'll catch every word that way. So beautiful! :)
There is something about this song that I can't quite put my finger on because it pushes a major nostalgia button. I was a teen back then. As usual, you brought some new insights to old favorites. Thank you!
I was WAY into classic rock when this came out, and the occasional new wave song, so my head wanted to hate this song, but it just was so great, catchy and well done, I loved it.
Same here. Less than 2% of my collection is pop music, and even as a young adult in the 1980s I loathed that synth-heavy style. The frequent 80s nostalgia revivals pass me by. This song, however, is just irresistible and Lauper's vocal prowess is top-shelf. I enjoyed her albums as well, plus her later foray into the blues. As a person she's so relatable and I kinda wish I could hang out with her in real life. Guess that qualifies me as a fan, albeit in a guilty-pleasure way.
This video was actually a massive thing for the WWF. Her father was played by Captain Lou Albano who worked in the WWF at the time. This then led to her appearing on WWF television which brought a lot of ratings and eventually led to the first ever Wrestlemania. It's genuinely such a keystone moment in the industry its tough to know what would have happened in wrestling as a whole without it
Although it’s ultimately meaningless and pretty stupid, the fact that Cyndi Lauper of ALL the non-wrestling people with some (often extremely tangential) involvement with the WWF/WWE wasn’t the very FIRST non-wrestler inducted, but still isn’t in the WWF Hall of Fame is pretty disgusting honestly. Now McMahon is gone hopefully she’ll be in (if she wants to!). There does seem to be something stirring in the zeitgeist where Cyndi’s absolutely pivotal role is being discussed here and there by wrestling fans - all ends with with the same question: why hasn’t SHE, of all people, gotten the recognition she deserves yet. Trump is in but Cyndi Lauper isn’t? Unbelievable.
I have loved this song ever since I saw the video when it was brand new. I had a great group of friends and we danced to Cindi's music, along with Boy George, the Police, Duran Duran, and many others. Happy times.
Whoooooooo! This was such a damn ANTHEM for us in the 80s. Cyndi Lauper has SUCH a voice, and she is so very versatile.... I hope you do more of her work. The final scene with all the people in the room and then falling out the door is a riff on the crowded cabin scene from 'A Night at the Opera', the classic Groucho Marx movie.
Elizabeth, please, if you want to see the power she is capable of, watch the live version of “Money Changes Everything”, you you will know why SHE is my favorite female vocalist of all time. Thank you for all you do!
Great song and video, Cyndi cast her real-life mother Catrine as her mother in the video, as well as her lawyer, her manager, her brother Butch and her dog Sparkle. Art imitates life. "All through the night" is also a great song
@@FABIO_MARTINSS she absolutely is, I read her autobiography Cyndi Lauper: A Memoir, and my respect for her went even higher. What she's been through, so many medical issues, and all the while so charming and generous. And after the tsunami in Japan, everyone else canceled their shows, but she stayed to provide comfort to a grieving populace. Music is healing. She's just wonderful.
Lauper studied under Katie Agresta and also formally studied jazz and has a 4 octave voice....you should check out her later stuff...she did Three Penny Opera on Broadway and co-wrote Kinky Boots...she also has a new Broadway musical called working girl making it's debut in 2026
Growing up as a young boy in the 80s this was one of my favourite records to listen to. To this day I still listen to the same copy handed down to me from my dad.
11:34 thats Lon Chaney Sr in the hunchback of notre dame. he also did Phantom of the Opera. he was going to be dracula when sound first came but died of throat cancer. His son is the Wolfman
I see we already have requests for "Time After Time" and "True Colors" covered. There might even be some mentions of "Goonies Are Good Enough" or "She Bop" if I scrolled down enough. Or if there aren't, there undoubtedly soon will be. All good songs. But my sleeper pick is "All Through the Night"
Since you mentioned Andre The Giant, he did appear on Cyndi's video. "Good Enough" from the Goonies soundtrack. Two part loooong video with several then-WWF stars appearing, like Roddy Piper, Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Classy Freddy Blassie. Also the kid actors from the movie. Recommend at least watching them, if not necessarily reacting to them.
I was lucky enough to see Cindy live on her True colours tour here in Melbourne Australia, she came on stage and apologised for being sick and the large amount of snot coming out of her nose ,😅😂😅😂 she absolutely sang her heart out and sounded amazing , full respect was gained from me that night 😊 and I am an old school headbanger 🤘
Hehe, for "lip lift" maybe take a look at Billy Idol at some time. There you'll get some of the most iconic lip lifts. For Cyndi Lauper, I would second "True Colors" and "Time After Time" here.
Ms. Lauper is a greatly underrated talent as a songwriter and singer. I think it's because of her humor and wit. But check out her live of "Money Changes Everything" later in life. Blows me away. Great job on the video, as always.
Wonderful analysis. Cyndi is a fabulous entertainer. Her facial contortions and vocal stylings are a trademark that made her stand out. The video was great fun and even had a Conehead dancing in her room at the end. The black and white movie clip was from the Hunchback of Notre Dame.
And she was panned when she played Glastonbury this year because she sang completely live. Okay her voice has aged and she struggled on some notes but it was truly her. Dua Lipa, who sang with a mixed in, autotuned recorded vocal backing was applauded. I despair of the youth today, no idea what real live music is.
11 years ago Cyndi toured with Cher. I went to that concert to see Cher (a lifetime love), but Cyndi absolutely blew my socks off with her voice, energy level and humour. She was in her 60's at the time, and performed like someone half her age. I gained so much respect for her. I highly recommend seeing her live, if you get the chance.
This is truly fun, joyous, bubblegum, pop and I love it. It's the soundtrack of my early teens. Cyndi made us people who weren't jocks but were a little odd and artsy feel like we belonged. I completely agree with all of her song recommendations in this comment section. "Time after time", "true colours", and "drove all night", were all proof that she was so much more than just your average pop star. Just stunning.
She has a vocal sound that is so distinct to...HER. Just like Sting, Bowie and Bjork. The voice is the vocal instrument backed with amazing songs, kind of...just for them.
Her father in the video was played by Captain Lou Albano, a professional wrestler. So, it was kind of funny to see Cyndi turn him around and twist his arm.
I highly recommend you analyze pretty much any performance from the Live…At Last concert, especially Money Changes Everything. Cyndi is an incredible artist.
I would like to suggest USA for Africa - We Are the World. In this song you will get to hear a great many singers, from Bob Dylan to Steve Perry. Steve Perry is someone I know you will get around to eventually. A strategic google search and you can find out all the singers in order. Take care always! ❤
I was 7 when this came out and my dad says when it came on the radio, I would tell him who all the singers were when they came on and sang their parts. lol
In the 80’s, Captain Lou Albano was a “Manager” in the WWF. He was one of my favorite personalities as he would stick rubber bands to his face (never really understood why). Cyndi was a guest performer at WrestleMania at MSG. I believe it was around the time that Girls Just Wanna Have Fun was at its peak.
People forget how important Cyndi was to the popularization of professional wrestling! She was brought in with Mr. T to bring kids and especially girls, into wresting. It was shortly after this that the Saturday morning cartoons of WWF(E) started.

I'll second that Andy! Bad Valentine (Piano Diaries) is a MASTERPIECE of jazz, soul and piercing emotion. Elizabeth has gone a year+ since reacting to Angelina - this performance is more than worthy of a return to AJ, the best vocalist I've ever experienced.
‘Bad Valentine’, written by Toby Gad (co-writer of ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’) and Angelina Jordan, was originally recorded as a powerful upbeat song but has been reimagined in the newer Piano Diaries version, which seems more like a compelling mix of contemporary music and Blues.
Andy selected a really great song and artist! Bad Valentine (Piano Diaries) is a soulful and jazzy performance by Angelina Jordan, an incredible vocalist that can mesmerize people with her fantastic voice and storytelling. Definitely a song worth reacting to and analyzing...
A HUGE INFLUENCE ON A GENERATION OF GIRLS! I'm a guy, but I know from living during those times .. Cyndi Lauper and this song was an early girls and women empowerment musical heroine for girls growing up in the mid 80's and early 90's for sure! When I'd visit many of my female friends childhood homes back in the late 80's (after they had reached adult age) they'd show me their old bedrooms where they grew up and there would be a number of Cyndi Lauper posters, especially with the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!" graphics on them! She has quite a number of great songs she released during that time. True Colors, Money, and Time After Time should be next on your list to explore. When it comes to music, singing and writing, Cyndi is an amazingly talented woman! Just checked in on her. I can't believe she is 71 years old. How scary time goes by so fast! She is currently on a farewell tour.

Jewel starting her singing career as a kid yodeling, and you can definitely hear it in her voice when she sings many of her songs. If you've never listened to her, I'd recommend starting with Who Will Save Your Soul; play her video with the close captioning on and you'll catch every word that way. So beautiful! :)
She's still great today. One of my favorite ladies from 80's!
I love this video. Cyndi is an awesome voice from the 80's. And the inclusion of Captain Lou Albano as the dad. Pure Awesome.
I'm SOOO glad you are doing the original of this one! The vocals and video are so much fun!
How about B-52s "Roam" for a future video?
Or Love Shack they're both great fun.
Roam totally rocks. And Kate Pierson’s part of Shining Happy People as well.
@@BalBurgh And "Candy" with Iggy Pop.
Just saw her live for the first time earlier this month. She still has it and can belt.
I think maybe Hulk Hogan had a little bit to do with the WWF explosion.
I have loved this song ever since I saw the video when it was brand new. I had a great group of friends and we danced to Cindi's music, along with Boy George, the Police, Duran Duran, and many others. Happy times.
😄 Ha! I just knew there was some Cyndi Lauper in you, opera girl.
Delightful hearing about you puddle jumping. I can see it.
It's time to do Billy Idol Rebel Yell. You wanna see the Elvis lip curl taken as far as it can go, then it's time for Billy!
😂😆 good point!
Yesssss!!!!!!!
Time after time and I drove all night, will demonstrate just how crazy awesome her voice is.
Keep up the good work.... Harrumph
Cyndi has one of the most recognizable singing styles. I am glad you found time to do a first analysis.
What a wonderful singer!! TRUE COLORS is probably my favorite of hers, closely followed by TIME AFTER TIME. More Cyndi!!!!
I'm pretty sure "daddy" is Lou Albano.
You are correct!
Yes... Back when this song was new, Lou Albano's wrestling career was in full swing, so, Cyndi pinning him on the wall, was particularly cute!
Captain Lou Albano. Captain of what or branch of the military I do not know
Ioi it actually comes from him being captain of his football team @Dr.Claw_M.A.D.
Elizabeth I'd love to hear you walk through a classical aria and show us how an opera voice works versus a pop voice.
She does a reaction of herself singing an aria during an operatic competition.
True Colours, Time After Time, and She Bop are awesome, and the latter has a lot of that hiccup sound that you liked here.
All through the night. Yes, please.
The eight girls surrounding Cyndi in the video are also her real-life friends.
@shaynaformity1384 Cyindi must be a lovely, warm person❤️
This. And this and more this.
yes, there's something transcendent that happens there.
I think I'm Going To Be Strong would be my sleeper pick.
We were on the same wavelength! Agree!!!
I grew up with such music. We need more like this these days... More bands and talented performers...
The 80s had the best music
I'm Gonna Be Strong, very beautiful and emotinal song where Cyndi really shows what she's vocally capable of.
I saw Cyndi when this album came out at Jones Beach..she was fantastic. Still is!
Listening to her sing "At Last" is jawdropping.
❤ Yes indeed, it is SPECTACULAR!
I think she's very highly rated.
Listen to her solo on "We are the World" it's fabulous. And Time After Time is a much better representation of what she can do vocally.
Girls Just Wanna HavebFun, True Colors, and Time After Time are my favorites from Cyndi's catalog.
You need to check out her live performance of "Money Changes Everything" in Paris. She has power.
Cyndi Lauper has a really strong New York accent and that definitely contributes to her voice.
Yeah, Cyndi is a terrific singer and songwriter - I am hoping to catch the premiere this time 😀
She Bop, Time After Time, True Colors, Money Changes Everything. She has many great songs. I hope you dive into more of them.
Love this song, instant classic
True Colors is just a must for analysis.
Her version of “I Drove All Night” is fantastic and really shows her range.
I'd love to see you cover Time After Time as well.
Gotta do "Words" by Missing Persons for more of this type of vocalization.
Walking in L.A.
Time After Time - deep, deep dive. Oh and then Weird Al - Girls Just Want to Have Lunch 😂😂😂
Came here to rec the Weird Al version! 😂
Cyndi lauper is at the top of her craft in the song "Time after Time" 🧑🍳
"I'm gonna be strong" when Cyndi was with Blue Angel shows her power, range, and grit. Truly amazing
What a lovely reaction! Your reaction was just as fun as the song and the video. 🎹🎶🎤❤
I highly recommend you analyze pretty much any performance from the Live…At Last concert, especially Money Changes Everything. Cyndi is an incredible artist.
Yes!!!!
Cyndi Lauper is a LEGEND. Loved her all the time.
Perfect thumbnails don't exi-
Please please please REACT to her live vocals!! Her singing this at the Front & Centre Concert when she was 60
I would like to suggest USA for Africa - We Are the World.
I'm a proud patreon for The Charismatic Voice and have learned, REQUESTS for Elizabeth to react to are best made in the comments below the video. HINT request just one video. Reply to comments for video requests you agree with. Elizabeth reads the comments.
I request Elizabeth review the amazing jazzy vocals from Angelina Jordan, singing her latest original "Bad Valentine".
ua-cam.com/video/vN3YzuX1kkY/v-deo.htmlsi=xsgiG-wQGK_510lq
I'll second that Andy! Bad Valentine (Piano Diaries) is a MASTERPIECE of jazz, soul and piercing emotion. Elizabeth has gone a year+ since reacting to Angelina - this performance is more than worthy of a return to AJ, the best vocalist I've ever experienced.
Andy has picked a great one - Angelina’s jazz noir version of her Bad Valentine is something very special to experience
She's got several great versions of that song out now, its a good time to be a fan.
See you all in LA at her xmas special, this will be such a blast.
❤ I Love all Her Ballads.
True Colors, is One of my Favorites. Phil Collins does A great rendition, I have to Say I like His Version better Because of the percussion.
Thank You again Elizabeth
For the shirt I Love 😍 it ❤
Cyndi sounds like a different person in "I Drove All Night"...Her best song imo.
