Sitting around isn’t incompetence, it’s criminally negligible ! And then your first move is to pull guns on the parents? It’s complete insanity and I’m surprised the parents stayed at bay even at gunpoint .
right. any tactical mistake can be corrected or re-tried in 80 mins when your team remains uninjured and fully equipped. there is no excuse for what happened here.
Jocko's rant about the chief "forgetting" his radio is 100% spot on. If you've spent 5 minutes in public safety, you feel naked without a radio. You are literally attached at the hip to your radio, it stays on your belt always. I've even accidentally taken my radio home at the end of my shift. I am wondering why his radio wasn't on his belt already, before the incident even began. In fact, most incident commanders I've seen have two or three radios. You have a mic that lets you operate hands free, so you can keep two hands on the gun or whatever else you're working on. You only need one hand briefly when you need to key your mic.
Police Chief’s are hardly cops. They’re politicians and executives. They don’t wear a gun belt and carry radios. They don’t wear bullet resistant vests. They wear a uniform shirt, usually with their rank obnoxiously displayed for the subordinates to genuflect to, and pants, and maybe carry a weapon in an off duty type holster. Most of them walk around pretending to be 4 star generals.
@@hendriesterhuysen6624 I agree with you. But police chief’s sit behind desks and rarely carry a radio. That being said, there were certainly other officers standing around with one. He should have taken one of theirs immediately. He’s blaming a lack of radio for his incompetence. Not that there’s no blame to be passed around. The 7-10 guys stacked up outside that classroom should have went in, orders or no orders.
We had a shooter at my son's high school. Three off duty cops in the civilian gear with just their side arms ran into the high school to neutralize the shooter. No hesitation and they did not have to wait for orders. They were from different departments. LAPD, LASD, and Inglewood yet they knew what their jobs where which is to stop the shooter and save the kids. Likewise when we had the North Hollywood here in LA, LAPD was outgunned and the assailants armor prevented the officers weapons from harming the suspects. But the took on the two bank robbers anyway and had to resort to going to a gun store to obtain high caliber rifles that could go through the robbers body armor. Because LAPD were so aggressive no lives were lost. My friends in LE are so furious that these cops stood around and did nothing.
I remember that. Living in Northern California thinking......chits gittin crazy down south. Those two guys were something else. If nothing else they had the stones to take it to the end. Surrendering wasn't in their game plan.
@@jimmer1047 Well Emil surrendered 29 rounds later lol. But I agree with you to an extent. The only thing that bugs me about them is that innocents people were hurt and endangered. But some civi getting groceries shouldn't end up in the crossfire it isn't right.
The live scenario of being one of those parents who were cuffed by the police while a shooter is shooting kids in their school is literally one of the worst real life nightmares that can happen.
I hate to sound like “that guy” but I’d like to think if my child were in there, there would be a trail of bodies behind me of everyone trying to keep me from getting to them….
I would argue that cuffing those willing to stop a murderer makes you ann accessory to that murder. ESPECIALLY when those cuffing the parents are the very people who are expected to stop the murderer.
In Greenwood, Indiana a 22 year old man with a glock 9mm took action and fired on an active shooter hitting him 8 of 10 rounds from 40 yards away. He was untrained but knew what to do and took action saving many many lives.... 80% hit rate in an active combat situation with adrenaline pumping. Untrained.... God Bless Him.

Another thing that’s also disturbing is one student who survived in the classroom with the gunman. Said the cops outside in the hallway were telling the kids to yell for help. @@sirtwentythree where’s your source for that? Because that’s not what’s being reported. The gunman was hiding in a closet at the time they finally made entry.
I’m an armed, uniformed security officer at a private school. I get nothing but “thank you for being here” from parents, and many new students come to the school because of the added security - armed security, locked gates and cameras. That said, everyone I’ve come in contact with are 100% about keeping their children safe and could care less what it looks like.
100%. Unless you are completely blinded by ideology how do you justify armed security to protect your money but not your (and our countries) most value resources.... It's more to me about how a security / officer presents themselves. I don't think we need Rambo. We want personalable people that help raise our kids but when needed can go to war with a threat. There are lots of ways to do that. But beyond all the tricks, toys, strategies.. its about having people that will step forward to protect others. Stay vigilant...
Have you ever been in a situation involving firearms being directed towards you? If not then you have no idea how you'll act if the unfortunate day comes. Do you have regular training which involves how to deal with an active shooter, involving on the ground practice. If not. Then you really have no idea what to do.
You’re right. If anyone was standing by running suck while my child is in danger and they prevent me from doing something about it after I don my own armor and weapon, they’re the first to die. Aloha. 🤙🏾
If you have may adults running around the school with guns who is the Police to focus on. I can see more innocent people being shot. There is not clear answer for this.. It could go both ways. That being said I'd like to think that I'd try to go in after my child. But all this should of not been an issue because the cops should of made entry as soon as 3 or 4 cops get on scene. I have had conversations with my State training center about this for over 2 years ago. I know the Chief trainer in my State who is a former Marine. This moving in quickly by Cops is suppose to be standard practice now in every State In my State if you are the only office on scene in a rural area you get the first two people with guns to enter with you. Rural areas do the best they can.
So there is less confusion...the cops not doing anything to save your child are the closest, current enemy. Take them out then breach the school. You will not save every child, but you will save more than they are. Get in, no matter WHO you have to kill to get to your baby. This is not hard...standing by why children are being murdered requires your own death. That is the price for cowardice
It’s because they didn’t know there were kids in the classroom so they were treating it like a barricaded suspect. B Tatum just did an updated video on it.
Fin Golfin but they were getting phone calls from alive kids in the classroom begging for help? And yet continued to stay in the hallway, some on their phones some sanitizing their hands.
@@bboysaif8 supposedly dispatch didn’t relay those calls to the officers on scene. That’s coming from that same B Tatum video. Which sounds ridiculous, but it does makes sense with the way the cops were causally milling around. Common sense would say if they knew kids were in there they would have been pushing the door.
Fin Golfin They heard constant gun shots coming from the room, which went for like an hour, they heard kids screaming, what else would they be thinking is going on? This is utter and complete failure on all accounts.
01:15:49 This is a perfect example of why I hold so much respect for Jocko as a human being and a leader. Mid-sentence, when he realizes he is characterizing a position he may be personally opposed to in an uncharitable mocking voice, he pauses, corrects himself, and states the position objectively and with respect. This mindset and style of communication enables problems to be solved. If only our elected officials, political talk show hosts, and others in positions of influence could model this to Americans more broadly. Thank you Jocko for using your platform honorably!
The more i hear former SOC operators, the more i find them more nuanced, reasonable, poised, and smarter than most of the "elite" politicians and mainstream commentators. I'm not American so it may be unbecoming for me to say but those are the kind of guy that should run the country.

Running in to die wouldn't help anyone! You are right, its a failure of society to address the root cause and secondly to protect children at schools by ensuring all states and municipalities have well documented SOP's coupled with Law Enforcement being equipped and trained to respond using said SOP's. You gotta get Paul Howe from CSAT on to discuss this, as well as his Army career, including “Blackhawk Down”. He summed it up perfectly in the after-action video he posted right after Uvalde regarding the LEOs: “You get paid to go in, not to come out.” Exactly.
I graduated in 2012, and we had a school officer. We called her Fergie, she was armed, and she loved the kids at school. As a former LEO I support massive, centralized overhaul of LEO hiring and training standards. It was a mess when I started, and has never improved. Unbelievable amounts of cronyism and nepotism when hiring. Initial training is insufficient. Countless hours of emphasis on chicken shit like marching and shoe shining. Not enough emphasis on first aid, mindset, defensive tactics, communication, decision making. Minimal stress inoculation training. Once you hit the beat training all but stops. Hours per year. Maybe 24 hours per calendar year of mandated training. And to circle back to poor hiring practice…all the cowards, yes men, shitbags, and slugs…once everyone knows who they are…you have them for 20, 25, 30 years. They dont get weeded out or forced out. They just exist. They are career liabilities and everyone knows it. They will hold on to a fat coward shitbag yes man all day and witch hunt a stud who has the courage to ask questions.
And even "if" any action is taken against the "bad" cops the union and current laws protect them. The current state of Law Enforcement is a genie that will never be put back in a bottle I'm afraid. Thank you to good ones out there that stick with it.

Anyone who has ever seen or met Arredondo in person knows immediately that the only breaching or room-clearing training he's ever taken part in would be that of the buffet or a table full of breakfast tacos. He was put into that school district police chief position by all the good ol boys, who are now in full-on circle the wagon mode. Arredondo was sworn in to the city council position secretly, in a closed ceremony a few days after this incident. The city of Uvalde will do everything to sweep this gross negligence under the rug by any means necessary. Arredondo's only goal within that incident was to shovel his responsibility as the incident commander off onto someone else, which is evident in his abject fear to make any type of decision. Jocko absolutely nailed it on all points, most importantly was Arredondo's ignorant decision to not take critical communications equipment, and his pathetic answer to save face by saying he was rushing into harms way with two hands on his gun...

There was a former Marine sniper (IIRC) that grabbed his M4, and jumped on the hood of one of the patrol cars while they chased him through town. They finally disabled his vehicle on the loop and the sharpshooter shot him right in the head. It was a tragic situation, but executed perfectly by police. in Israel, since the terror attacks of the 80's and early 2000's it is a standard to have a security guard in almost every public place (maybe except MOST restaurants) so I grew up in schools in which at every open gate - sat a lightly armed security guard, whose role was to check everyone who enters the school and is not supposed to be there. never once have I felt I was in prison those guards actually became a part of the social fabric we liked them and looked up to them they helped us when needed, were friends of our parents, and generally made our days better, since its always good to see another familiar face.
I would imagine if u have a caring, rational, and very tactically trained security guard in each school. I always assume u wouldnt feel in danger or prison...... 99.9% of the time would be him getting to know the faculty, students, help when needed and be part of the community.... Its still a school so i never understood how one argues that it would make it feel like a prison....... Not like ur in a cage, n ur monitored 24,/7. Its simply a securty guard protecting the school.

There’s not a lot of teachers that would want to carry a loaded gun in a room full of children just saying. Then they have to worry about accidental discharging and a whole bunch of other BS people just don’t need in their lives.
@@adamb8317 some of the most solid, best teachers I had were army, navy, & marine veterans. And some former LEO. They really made an impact when I was a little high school hellion. They cared about us & cared about the example they set for us. They’d never known it bc I was too busy getting into trouble lol , but I knew they’d keep us safe. Never any doubts of that. I went to a private military school. There was only one there that didn’t belong bc he was like a bully, but he wasn’t a teacher, he was just a tac officer.
I'm only halfway through the video but I keep hearing about how training would've prevented the polices' failure. I hope to God Jocko addresses the fact that the Uvalde bragged on Facebook about all their new S.W.A.T gear while posing in a picture claiming they had been practicing anti-shooter drills IN THAT EXACT FUCKING SCHOOL. All of that city's money had been given to that PD and they spent it on fucking military gear, trained in anti-shooter drills IN. THAT. FUCKING. SCHOOL, had the balls to brag on FaceBook about how cool they were, and this is the fucking outcome we got.
I understand the tone of outrage. I believe the individual officers have perfect self awareness of their non performance. If it helps, they will reflect on that every day the rest of their lives with regret, sorrow, and inconsolable remorse. I know I would if I had failed to act. I know Jocko says you cannot predict your own behavior. But i know my character over decades. I suspect these cops, decided in advance on a deeply personal level they would NOT risktheir lives, and that day they followed through on that self promise. They knew. They damn well knew.
I wonder what would happen if there were at least two national Guardsmen at every school 💂💂👨👩👦, not armed teachers or guards or even police, military level security, and if doors we're bulletproof like they are on airplanes with alarms along with self-sealing ability, just look to Pamela Geller's 300 event, officially the draw Muhammad event, isn't that a cliche the 300? security works, the Israelis were able to block 99% of terrorism coming into their country with a magnificent beautiful wall, a huge wall, not a single airplane hijacked since 9/11 due to proper security measures 🦅🥾🤠🇺🇲🤜💣💥😵 Also think of the positive influence and Recruitmen this would create by having National Guards at school
I really appreciate having echo on the podcast to hear his opinion especially when they are opposite to Jockos, both of you are the perfect model for having a civilized discussion. Ps Jocko if you read this please excuse my grammar
As an Israeli it's hard for me to understand your American mindset. Back in the 80s we had terrorist attacks on schools, and since then we had an armed guard at the entrance of every school, guess what happened? No more terrorist attacks on schools...
The 1 school shooting the armed guard was a coward and didnt go in. He lied and said he thought the shooting was outside. He still to this day wont do a interview
Interesting 🧐 I think parents are just entitled, thus think we shouldn’t **be** **forced** to apply such measures, as, ThEy neVEr haD TO DO thAt ☝️thus they hate the thought of it. As there **has** *to* **be** some other way, uhg. I’m working on renouncing my citizenship because people here are too corrupt, anyhow.
I've posted a few times, but the money sent to Ukraine since Feb could put 5 swat agents in EVERY school in the US (nearly 140k schools) for a whole year, based on average pay. I am not a fan AT ALL of Russia, but we need to focus on our kids.
It’s because we have politicians using these shootings to enact more gun control. They don’t want security because the gun control debate would go out the window.
I’m a full time fire/medic in New England and we’ve trained with our PD locally on this… knowing what they’re gonna do and us coming in right behind to render aid. 2 out of 3 full scale training events we had blue on blue engagements and also on our side lost track of where folks we’re working. It’s chaotic and more dynamic than any fire situation. Totally echo the sentiments on comms.
"2 out of 3 training events had blue on blue engagements " yeah and I bet you didn't have civilians trying to get in plus armed teachers. It 'd be easy to see how things could really get out of hand. Now add another factor that happens in many areas. You said you word with the local PD and that is great. . But suppose it was one Highway Patrolman (trooper), and off duty federal agent, and a Sheriff's officer that first arrived. That is three and they need to go in. None of the three worked with you or each other but they are under obligation to go in. This could end badly but they have no choice. They don't need civilians running around as they try to take him down. I think civilians rushing in could be very dangers and even more so if some of the cops charging in are not in uniform.
Imagine if firemen were afraid to enter your home to save you and just watched it burn? It’s your duty to protect at all costs. The fact that this building wasn’t swarmed is beyond me. If you’re not willing to risk your life for others you are in the wrong line of work.
Did you know the US Supreme Court actually ruled that police have "no duty to protect" citizens? Police are always the teeth of the state, but in modern times they've fallen even lower to become essentially bureaucracy enforcers. It's crazy to me that people ever trusted the police to do anything besides clean up, and harass people for minor "crimes" that affect no one.
Fucking hard for me to listen to you break this down tactically as a father now, second kid due in august. But especially when I hear you describe the parents outside, I would snap
I'm with you. I'm allergic to pepper spray, so it's very close to a death sentence without epi. I don't miss at that range. Would have been way more than 19 kids and two adults. Officer involved altercation attempting to murder me resulting in... Ha, told you what's my kryptonite. I can hold my breath for quite a while though and keep working
If my kid was at that school and cops are trying to stop me from saving my kids im shooting at anything inbetween me and my kid. Im not worried about my life at that point

We now know that there were nearly 400 law enforcement personnell on this scene (from local, state and feds) and not a single one took action for 40 minutes. It is a complete failure of not only one department, but American law enforcement in general. I'm glad that he brought up the concept of mentally preparing yourself to die. I remember accepting that when I joined the USMS, that I could very well be killed and/or be required to kill another person. Many, many cops never do this and so they go through their career afraid. This is why so many unarmed people get shot for no reason when a lower amount of force (requiring some more risk to the officer) would have stopped the threat. It doesn't help that even in my own training, I was told that my safety was the most important thing in a scenario. The vast majority of "officer survival training" was aimed at scaring us about dying. It's a fundamental issue in all Law Enforcement training in the US.
There needs to be a deep dive by the people of Uvalde. Not The State of Texas. Not the Federal Government. The People of Uvalde need to examine the command culture of their municipal PD to find out why not one officer said, "Sir, I relieve you," and organized a rescue.
exactly adults is one thing but KIDS ill do anything to save a child but not going in wow watching another channel where i saw video it's completely sickening to watch these cops in hallway just hide ONLY 2 officers actually made it to room one got some Shrapnel by his head but he tried to go back the others just hide NO cover my god
They conveniently covered their asses with the hostage scenario. The covering of their own asses started with that lame, yet very telling "I left my radio in my car because it would slow me down" excuse. Pretty sad to hear the people in charge were better equipped with excuses instead of skills.
I can’t even imagine dispatch trying and trying to get a hold of the chief or whatever his title was on the radio. That reasoning was completely fucktarded.
Uvalde just proves police need access to more funding, trading, and access to modernized armaments. If they simply had a Reaper Drone they could've deployed it to fire a Hellfire missile into the classroom to off the perp.
Yeah except these police officers probably weren't trained for anything like this and if they could've called SWAT they probably would have, people can type on the internet all they want but most people don't actually know how they would react right now as they read this comment if they were put in the exact scenario those officers were in even with their training, that doesn't mean I'm saying what they did was right but with all that adrenaline running through your body, if you aren't used to that it will be very very hard to make clear rational decisions and that' assuming you're healthy, if you already have heart issues or psychological issues and numerous other health issues could obviously be life threatening.
I am an almost 30 year educator. This was a very important podcast. I hope echelon front looks into creating more programs and training for educators, as someone who attended a muster I know fellow educators would benefit greatly from the training. Schools are not pro-active and unfortunately rarely reflect at what has happened previously and make the necessary changes. Many of the same issues that happened in this case happened at Columbine. Schools very often just try to wish problems away. The Muster I attended opened with a discussion of the Crimean War and how the British did not learn lessons from that war contributing to the catastrophic results of WW1, I feel that was unfortunately a great analogy to use with many schools as on many issues we have had things happen that should have been "teachable moments" to learn from and make changes from, and that does not happen. Schools are often funded based on graduation rates, low discipline rates, attendance rates and unfortunately these priorities often conflict with basic safety issues. Add in issues of "confidentiality," 504s, IEPs, having to allow students to use the bathroom, restorative justice programs, issues over making students and staff wear ID, concerns over what is referred to as the "school to prison pipeline," funding following the students....these issues very often complicate basic safety issues. Again, I really think school systems: admin, teachers, students, parents could benefit greatly from the ideas of Extreme Ownership. Unfortunately, it requires wanting to pro-actively deal with issues and very often schools systems don't want to do that. Columbine was in the late 1990s, Sandy Hook, Parkland, the lessons should have been learned. What has changed?
I was kind of thinking the same thing.....After Columbine, what was done to prevent further horrific and tragic school shootings? I always thought police stations across the country would develop a swat/q.r.f type division dedicated to only a active school shooter. I don't have kids of my own but have a 13 year old niece who gets physically ill from nerves about going to school. It's so sad that kids now have to be scared to go to school.
"Had to train their default mode to be aggressive", I worked for several years as a fire fighter, the first fire that I went to, we showed up and the house was very on fire(flames blowing out roof and windows), I remember thinking, "someone should call someone about that" and then realizing that someone already had, they had called me 😅and that made me take a second to think through our tasking to figure out my responsibility was. The whole situation was overwhelming, but because we had trained, I was able to figure out what task I was supposed to be performing. I figured out that I was supposed to be making sure no one was in the building, I joined up with my captain and began search operations. No people but we were able to save several pets. No grand heroics, but having and following procedures allowed us to keep the situation from getting worse. We got the people/creatures out of the building and put the fire out. None of those things were going to do themselves, but we practiced doing them. I did not get paid enough to make "it worth it", but I did want the chance to get to improve the lives of people in our community, the duty was the motivation....and practicing what to do lets you be aggressive. I am glad to never have been in a situation that was this dangerous, but we did practice doing the things for situations like this, and I think if it had come down to it, we would have been ready to act, I hope anyways, we did in other situations. The situation gets better when you put water on the fire/lead the bad guy. Then you are safe 😅
All military combat specialties and civilian LEOs KNOW that they're supposed to go DIRECT to THREAT in an active shooter scenario. This was cowardice, lack of communication, and lack of training. You don't WAIT for a breacher or a KEY during an ACTIVE SHOOTER scenario. You kick in the door.
"All military combat specialties and civilian LEOs KNOW that they're supposed to go DIRECT to THREAT in an active shooter scenario." A lot of people in a lot of scenarios - not always even life & death - "know" what they are "supposed to do." But in the heat of the moment, when it gets real for the first time, they panic, they forget, they hesitate. That's the point of the kind of training Jocko is talking about in this video.
I attended public schools my whole life. Every school I went to had at least one security guard. It doesn't have to be scary. In fact, a few of them were quite friendly. I felt safe.
I grew up in and still live close by to Oxford and I want to say I have tremendous respect for the Oakland County Sherifs because they responded and went right into the school without hesitation and neutralized the shooter very quickly. They obviously allocate a lot of time and money towards training and it really showed that day.
I graduated in 2003. My school had multiple buildings, some doors were locked, and most weren't. We also had 3 police officers that were at the school most, if not all of the time, and some additional security presence from time to time. Some of the windows had chicken wire in them so people wouldn't get thrown through glass. I never heard of anyone being uncomfortable with the police/security presence. This may sound extreme to some folks, but we didn't find it unusual at all. We had bomb scares at times, and sometimes vandalism. We had both evacuation and lockdown protocols that were simple, not alarming, and seemed relatively effective. Most of us thought it was entertaining.
I teach my children active shooter drills. I also teach my children to call me if this would happen. I walk the halls of the school to understand the layout bc I am coming.
We like to think we'd have acted better because almost all of us would have. A run of the mill untrained mother with a 38 J frame wouldve acted more courageously and to greater effect.
All about the msg here. Very much disagree with the idea that "most" people would've immediately sprung into action. Most people aren't so quick to put their lives on the line imo. Seen way more life and death situations where people just sit back and watch or put their own lives ahead of others. Multiple chances to stop this before it even started but nobody paid attention, can't believe they would've acted when bullets started flying unfortunately.
@@RellayNetwork So, just so I understand you, and your world view, according to you, we should just accept weak, ineffective leadership, because no one can make any difference as President? That is a very shortsighted, nihilistic philosophy to have. Yes, there is much corruption and greed in our government. That is exactly why we need real leadership. Presidents absolutely can make a difference. To deny this is quite juvenile, and shows a very lackluster understanding of history. Presidents have shaped our nation in numerous ways both good and bad. To say a podcast host has anywhere near the reach or power of the President is laughable. Just look at how much Biden has changed things in the relatively short time he's been in office! He's breaking records all over the place. But it's me that is failing to understand how the world works, right? 😁👍
I will elaborate for you: thanks for asking: Joe Rogan has far more influence than Joe Biden. In terms of what he is able to accomplish. Joe Biden can only do what his administration allows him to do. If you think a half dead zombie is calling the big shots that's exactly what they would want us to believe. The real shot callers are the rich people who lobby for these decisions. Yes he still has ability as a politician, but the real Shot Caller is the agendas themselves. If jocko was president they would tell him how to move and when to move and if he said something nationally it would cause Havoc because so many people, have agendas that are opposing each other. Thus, Jocko wouldn't have a free train of thought as he does now. He would become constricted by agendas and would cost lives no matter the "Good" he'd strive for
Man I'm "trained" and I feel like I'd plow through that door with the shooter there. Marine Corps Airwing here, but I saw "a bit". God bless that woman who saved her kids.
You made some strong points on this one bro, thoughts and prayers go out to the families who were affected by this tragic event. Jocko for president, who else agrees?
@MikeK Tell that to the librards that are working everyday to castrate the police and give them sensitivity training instead of what we really need! And that's warriors!
Hope he does an updated segment now that everything has come to light. Those cowards should be charged with accessory and pensions given to victims families
The leaders in the small communities only serve their own interest. Chief Arredondo is responsible and failed then was sworn into City Council. His OWN INTEREST . They failed at every level.
As an Active Shooter Instructor and Police trainer, I would say the respo se was a complete failure from the top down. They did not follow any response model that I can think of. A first responder must think priorities of life, 1, Innocence 2, Self other first responders, 3 subject, 4 Property.
It is a bit of a sales pitch. Just take the money from Congress and the Senate, heck, extravagant maintenance being cut back would probably pay his instructors
"This is the world we created" is the most profound statement of the state we are at in the USA(World). Do I like Police presence at schools I mentor? Do I like armed presence at my Church? Do I like to have personal protection to defend myself and my family and friends? NO...but murder of others started at the very beginning with two brothers(Genesis 4) and has continued ever since. Training, training, training is the key to this on all levels...from police to teachers to parents to those that want to be Shepherds. Thank you Jocko.
You know society is fucked when you have discussions about the tactics about protecting children from being shot at in their elementary school classroom.
This is a real world scenario that occurs in various places across the world. Places where people go into a place with innocent lives and denote a bomb. If you are an US citizen or first world citizen, this kind of violence is unnerving. Us first world people are finally seeing what the world is actually like.
I've never heard a more credible arm chair quarter back analysis in my life. Jocko did his best to be professional and unbiased and the police still look like clowns here. The on scene commander should be charged as an accomplice to those children's murder.
Supreme court protects them Several DV cases cops told the abused partner to get a gun. Many try sue police but they're not required to try save you even if someone trying kill you unless promise like Witness Protection program. Crap hits the fan possible I will be on my own.
@@thedude9082 not required to save you but they wouldn't let those parents save their children either. Seems like an argument could be made that their qualified immunity didn't apply to those actions.
Very unpopular opinion, but I think the police acted how a police would act given the scenario. The analysis is good - but it’s from the wrong perspective, even though I would agree with everything he said from my perspective- but that’s just the thing, it’s MY perspective. I’m an army officer, Jocko is a retired SEAL. So while our perspective may be to pin them from the front and send a section to fuck them in the ass, we should also understand that the police did not have the training, nor the command structure to do this effectively and safely. Carry out these maneuvers safely requires training, rehearsals and command structure that the police simply is not designed for. For example what’s the police SOP on avoiding blue on blue in these scenario? Doubt they had any (and before you say uniform, walls are not always bullet proof). Who leads it? Who is the 2IC in case the IC gets shot? Did they have enough bangers with them to deal with a barricaded enemy? The condition simply isn’t right for the POLICE to carry out such action. A platoon of infantier maybe, but not the police.
First off, from an elderly South African and an outsider who is interested, thanks for an excellent podcast on the event as you presented it according to the timelines. More than once had to wipe my eyes , it really touches one emotionally so heavily. I hope your discussion and the very valid points you make about mistakes and training are noted by your police authorities and that they make use of your hard earned experience and leadership qualities. My heart goes out to all in that community , it must be terribly difficult for the parents to accept such mind boggling, sub standard action from their law enforcement officers. For those young kids who were present at the slaughter of their classmates , I can only wish you strength and my prayers. Share your grief and fears, try not to bottle it up. Would appreciate any follow-up on the consequences and actions taken after this event. I hope I don't sound judgemental, but we all need to learn from this sad event. My country is staring anarchy in the face at moment , hence my gratitude for a refresher course in active , positive action when facing dire circumstances. Much respect to all you Veterans - be strong !
I don't think you can ever train the police officers in Uvalde enough for them to be hired in any PD ever. Not one of them have broken rank and told the truth yet. People can live with failure, but not when they have to prove that there was failure after listening to liars for weeks...
Definitely a lot of perspectives we haven’t seen yet. Appreciate your evaluation of what is publicly known. Our society overall definitely has a lack in training and preparedness for countless situations.
But it's a very (of course) military/tactical perspective, which focuses on the symptoms, not the cause (and yes, he says that). It's sickening to me that kids and teachers need all kinds of shooter drills and uniforms and equipment and automatic doors and metal detectors etc. And that we need AI to scan through every text message and automatically call police - i think Joko has never spent a minute of his life on a online message bard, because this AI would SWAT the hell out of millions of people. And i don't want badly trained officers in schools or a badly trained SWAT team kicking in my door. There are countless cases of school resource officers which really fuck up situations because teachers use them for normal discipline stuff and students get actually arrested (with a paper trail which can ruin their live) for nothing. Also don't forget the heroic school resource officer with 0 minute reaction time in parkland and how he stood outside waiting. Thank god i live in Germany where all of this is not a problem at all. Anyways, Joko has a specific view (based on his career and business interest), but for example his balanced view and self correction at 1:15:50 is why you got to respect the guy.
@@vanivari359 All countries, even Germany, are not without violent and/or mentally unstable people. Doesn’t matter what your government is, there is evil, and the capability for evil, everywhere.
Analytical mind beyond most. With natural leadership qualities. A battle hardened warrior. His face etched with sorrow for those poor kids. And frustration at the failure of the response, at the failure to respond. Politics might not be anything you are interested in, Jocko. But you could help lots and lots of people in a world where disorder is a constant possibility. Thank you for your service.
Listend on spotify. When I was 8 or 10 I walked home everyday from Robb elementary. Fridays if I was good I got to take my bike. These officers in leadership position need to be on suicide watch. I was born in this town and left when I was 26, 41 now. Everyone knows everyone, these Leo's will never be able to shoe face in that town again. You left out an important detail about the border patrol agent Albarado, he was getting his hair cut and the damn barber gave him his shotgun after getting a text from his wife. From the pictures I've seen it looks like a maverick 88. Very few people in Uvalde make more that 40k a year and 70% of the homes do not have central ac. Mostly poverty but they make a living if they work. I lost track of where I was going, just wanted to add some more information to this tragedy. Picking up a case of GO from HEB tomorrow btw
Would really appreciate a follow up to this podcast now that body cam and reports have been released, Jocko. Thank you for the insights that were covered already in this episode.
When I got out of the army, I volunteered for our local cops to run scenarios but never heard from them. I might toss em my info again after all this and see if they want one more.
Lol good luck with that. They’re going to be giving you tickets every time they see your car for making them feel inadequate and “threatened” - if they don’t red flag you
Dearest Jocko, You hit the nail on the head at about 28 minutes into the podcast on the Uvalde shooting. “This is an insane lack of training.” Welcome to the world of the MAJORITY of law enforcement training. I started in law enforcement full time in 1977 and I can guarantee that most of the training to meet legislative mandates worry more about the “legislative mandates” than actual usable training. Surprisingly firearms training is a very low priority in the training world of law enforcement. It isn’t that the officers don’t want it, but that it is: (1) Expensive; (2) “Looks to aggressive”; (3) There is a terrible attitude in Police Administrations and their political task masters opining that a mass shootings “Won’t happen here.” The “Chief” not carrying his radio is much more common than you would think. This is a legacy problem. It happened 40 years ago, well before cell phones were so common. When I first started patrol, after working in a county jail, we didn’t have portable radios. If we needed to yell “help” we had to fight our way back to the car, where we had hung the mic outside of the window so we could get to it faster. I must admit that we didn’t fight as nice as we do today, but that is another discussion. The question I have, is not for the people on the scene, but for the City, County administrators and the Chief’s of every agency that responded: “How much money did you spend training “Force-on-Force” and “Live Fire on a 360 degree range.” Yearly qualifications don’t count. I will bet it was little to nothing. Dave Grossman’s book, “On Killing” lists the four responses to combat: Fight, Flight, Freeze and Surrender. The appropriate training for school shooting requires repetitive, complex, Force-on-Force training, incorporating both groups and individual officer response. Check the TCOLE “Active Shooter Response for School-Based Law Enforcement Course #2195 January 2020.” No where is there any Force-on-Force training. Ammunition is not even mentioned. We all fight like we train. Immediate Action Drills require practice, practice, practice and then some more practice, until it is as perfected as possible. It also needs to be focused based training with good critical review after the guns are put down and have training cadre that take no prisoners on screw ups. Training is where you want to screw up, so you don’t screw up when lives are at stake. Failure at Uvalde happened long before the shooter was born. It started with leadership that was more worried about optics and budgets than lives. "A leader is paid to do three things: 1. Get the job done and get it done well. 2. Plan ahead-be proactive, not reactive. 3. Exercise good, sound judgment in doing all of the above." - Lt. General Hal Moore
@@krislvzep go to TCOLE and read what is required in the "training" for active shooter training. It is minimal and no live fire training or Simunitions training. I'm a LE firearms trainer and instructor. The class is like watching BUDs video and then considering yourself a Navy SEAL. I've been through the course, it's basically an informational course. There is a few blue gun exercises. It woefully lacks the repetitive training that is required to respond appropriately to mass shooters. There are hundreds of scenarios that need to be practiced frequently. Mindset has to be in place well before the call comes in. Repetitive training makes response reflexive. How much practice does a tennis player do to become proficient? Would you expect a tennis player to perform after minimal practice two months before?
Thank u Jocko for breaking it down and explaining what needed to be done sir I agree 110% with every single thing u said. I’m a disabled “car wreck” 37 yr old father of 4 and I stay strapped every day and I promise if something like this happened at my kids school u can bet ur a$$ I’m going in and neutralizing the threat immediately sir. I’ll lay my life on the line for ANY child and most definitely my own anytime & anywhere. Much love from Bokoshe Oklahoma
@@jin6000 if you did just a small amount of research, you would know uvalde police and uvalde SWAT had school shooter training just weeks prior to the incident.
Even when the chief finally said "IF you want to do it, then go." Still wasn't a command decision. That was him relinquishing command plain and simple. He quit.
jesus did he say that? why i LOVE sheriff from Boward County in Florida he's awesome he said you come to kill our kids we give our lives up you ill be Graveyard dead i died when he said this
In my high school we had a couple of guys, always in suits, that everyone affectionately referred to as the “narcs”. The were plain clothes cops and they were armed. Aside from the weekend locker vandalizing or occasional fist fight, we NEVER had problems such as this. Purely unannounced, LAPD would bring a drug dog around to find the kid that was selling weed from his locker, but that’s about it. But, in 1980/81/82, people still respected law enforcement to a degree.
Yep we had a few and they were the only good cops I personally ever knew. They were great. 2-3 was enough to take care of the fights and the heroin addicts and keep 1,500 high schoolers from burning the place down.
I said so many of the same points Jocko made on a post by a mainstream outlet. I got a literal flood of comments telling me I don't know what I'm talking about, can't speculate, wasn't there... It's good to know a majority of my points were touched on and confirmed by a member of the military special operations forces. It doesn't take a genius or even a military trained person to know, you go in. Kids inside+active shooter=Get your ass in there.
The fact that we now learned that the classroom wasn’t even locked in some ways makes this a lot worse, but I think your analysis on the failure to develop and act on a coherent plan is one of the first useful takes I’ve heard on this absolute tragedy. There are a lot of people going into conspiracy theory land, saying that this was a plot to overturn 2A, and I really can’t blame them due to all of the lies in the media and lack of information on this and so many similar events, but your take on this makes a lot more sense and actually offers reasonable suggestions to prevent these events from happening. And I remember having a school resource officer in my high school. An actual armed and uniformed police officer. He was friendly to the students and intervened in some more serious fights among students in the cafeteria. I don’t think it made the school feel like a prison at all. The people saying things like that unfortunately aren’t thinking critically about this. It would be great if nobody committed violence against others. But that’s just not how things work, or have ever worked.

Why are you even on-duty without your radio connected to you.
Absolutely, it's honestly the one piece of gear I had always made sure was charged up and with me.
Even shitty coms better than no coms. Establish command and get it done.
So sad and disgraceful man, and respect to the cops that took action immediately.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard Jocko let out so many heavy, long, drawn-out sighs in one episode before.

I guarantee you that he can't help but put himself in that situation and know how much different it should have been had even one cop done the right thing.
As a full time single father of two minor boys, my heart is broken for those parents outside that institution, hearing the rounds being fired, while LE prevented them from retrieving their children. While the individuals with training waited for tactical gear and body armor, the parents were willing and understand, they are thier child's armor, and would willingly lay down their life so their child may live.
Actually, They did have body armor and rifles and training, yet they waited.
Exactly.
Imagine a child calling 911, telling you exactly where the gunman is! 19 officers in the building(surely there’s a map of the school in somewhere inside the building they could have used) and not moving up and Swiss cheesing him before he can move on! in Israel, since the terror attacks of the 80's and early 2000's
it is a standard to have a security guard in almost every public place (maybe except MOST restaurants)
so I grew up in schools in which at every open gate - sat a lightly armed security guard, whose role was to check everyone who enters the school and is not supposed to be there.
never once have I felt I was in prison
those guards actually became a part of the social fabric
we liked them and looked up to them
they helped us when needed, were friends of our parents, and generally made our days better, since its always good to see another familiar face.
Thanks for sharing your perspective
In Israel is it required to have a security guard on every corner to blow the heads off of Palestinian women and children at a moments notice
Same here! 80s west Germany department of defense schools - serious security and it was comforting and normal.

But i know my character over decades. yeah and I bet you didn't have civilians trying to get in plus armed teachers.
I think civilians rushing in could be very dangers and even more so if some of the cops charging in are not in uniform.

Go through the sheetrock, break a window, drop down through ceiling. Anything to get between the perp and the kids.
"All military combat specialties and civilian LEOs KNOW that they're supposed to go DIRECT to THREAT in an active shooter scenario."
A lot of people in a lot of scenarios - not always even life & death - "know" what they are "supposed to do." But in the heat of the moment, when it gets real for the first time, they panic, they forget, they hesitate.
Officer safety is cowardice, Public safety is Heroic

They should all be hung, no trial

And watching this today, June 22, we know it was even worse. God take and embrace the souls of those children and teachers.😪❤
I don't think you can ever train the police officers in Uvalde enough for them to be hired in any PD ever. Not one of them have broken rank and told the truth yet. People can live with failure, but not when they have to prove that there was failure after listening to liars for weeks...
Maybe because it's an active investigation. All the comments on here are done with a very limited view and information.
It's a hunting community, they ain't used to someone shooting back

Keep up the great content jocko! Love your content and your books off the charts great!
As a civilian this whole tragedy drives me crazy. I can’t imagine how nuts guys like Jocko must feel
@Doshield first reasonable response I've read.....👍
The guy beats around the bush for 20 minutes and then calls for big tech to monitor private individuals internet traffic...wtf
Thank you guys for doing this. It needed to be done. As difficult as it was hearing it's important.
Same here.
I went to anthon elementary though.
He went In there to save his own kid he didn't care about the others or the gunman that's selfish
Would really appreciate a follow up to this podcast now that body cam and reports have been released, Jocko. Thank you for the insights that were covered already in this episode.
When I got out of the army, I volunteered for our local cops to run scenarios but never heard from them. I might toss em my info again after all this and see if they want one more.
they won't lol
Lol good luck with that. They’re going to be giving you tickets every time they see your car for making them feel inadequate and “threatened” - if they don’t red flag you
@@evan12697 your statement is true n just gives me major depression on the irrationality of that
Dearest Jocko,
You hit the nail on the head at about 28 minutes into the podcast on the Uvalde shooting.
“This is an insane lack of training.”
Welcome to the world of the MAJORITY of law enforcement training.
I started in law enforcement full time in 1977 and I can guarantee that most of the training to meet legislative mandates worry more about the “legislative mandates” than actual usable training.
Surprisingly firearms training is a very low priority in the training world of law enforcement. It isn’t that the officers don’t want it, but that it is: (1) Expensive; (2) “Looks to aggressive”; (3) There is a terrible attitude in Police Administrations and their political task masters opining that a mass shootings “Won’t happen here.”
The “Chief” not carrying his radio is much more common than you would think.
"A leader is paid to do three things:
1. Get the job done and get it done well.
2. Plan ahead-be proactive, not reactive.
3. Exercise good, sound judgment in doing all of the above." - Lt. General Hal Moore
Sad thing is they had training.. 2 months before.
One seal would’ve acted faster than these 19+ officers. This is a textbook example of bad leadership
Yea, almost as if seals are trained far more extensively than the police. Who would have thought it.
@@jin6000 Well, sounds like the police need a lot more training and less tacticool toys.
@@Saturnia2014 You said it mate! :)
@@jin6000 if you did just a small amount of research, you would know uvalde police and uvalde SWAT had school shooter training just weeks prior to the incident.
Im 36, I had an armed police officer in our high school, he was friendly and we didn't think anything of it.
Even when the chief finally said "IF you want to do it, then go." Still wasn't a command decision. That was him relinquishing command plain and simple. He quit.
jesus did he say that? why i LOVE sheriff from Boward County in Florida he's awesome he said you come to kill our kids we give our lives up you ill be Graveyard dead i died when he said this
Some people get promoted beyond their abilities.
Why would this shooting do anything when none of the other ones did? Remember a few years ago dude literally shot down at a concert in vegas. We clearly don’t care enough
Latest Intel shows cops were in the school in minutes with full kit battle rifle and ballistic shields!
They heard the shooting and stood down for another hour approximately.
No plan but to stand down and wait till the shooting stopped
For the life of me I can't understand what order they were being given?
