    No damage on the lower back corners, something which affects a lot of cabinets especially of this era. The paint is in great condition and the fact that the original plastic was over that Namco Midway badge on the back is a testament to the owner of this machine. Awesome.

    WOW !!!
    That is a real collectors item.
    Back in 81 / 82, arcades were brand new and this was one of the games, sometimes an arcade would have 2 or 3 of these, and Asteroids and Galaga and Galaxian.
    I remember Centipede as well
    God, I miss the early 80s
    Such a magic time
    Multiplex movies and Arcades and shopping malls, food courts, all brand new
    What a time to live through
    Electronics were just coming in
    Radio boom boxes
    Cassette player
    Vacuum display and the first LEDs
    Scanners the first digital scanners and 2-way radios
    Personal computer IBM the first real computer XT
    Such an amazing time
    Watching tube TVs phase out
    The LCD TVs replacing tube TVs and satellite digital TV was a big watershed
    I miss my 12 foot C-band dish
    The TV was so fuzzy in the 70s and 80s, and C-band satellite was so clear, it was incredible to have a C-band dish circa 1980
    They had a spin dial originally and then Uniden made the digital Receiver and that was amazing
    And everything was in the clear, no encryption
    Those were the days
    God I miss those days

    I have one of these that I've had since 1994. Mine is original too, but it is not as beautiful that one. Mine is well used and the paint is worn where lots of people held on to the cabinet while playing. I saved it from being converted to Ms. Pac-Man and got it for $300. I added a Two-Bits daughter board that allowed it to play several versions of Pac-Man & Ms. Pac-Man, but can remove that board and pop the original ROM back in and it'll be back to original. I did re-cap the monitor several years ago, because the screen image was bending around the edges. I didn't know about the flyback transformer and did not replace it at the time. It is funny that you mention the T-molding as mine is yellow, but you can tell it is orange underneath. Fantastic showing of this amazing classic.

    Me Pac-Man was the result of a deal midway made with a company called General Computer Corporation that was making mod kits for missile command and Pac-Man. The missile commmand mod turned it into Super Missile Attack and the Pac-Man mod kit turned it into “Crazy Otto”. Midway tried to sue them but ended up making a deal with them so the company changed their Otto character into Ms. Pac-Man. The test of the mods remained pretty much the same (different mazes, colors, walking fruits and new animated intermissions) and that’s what became Ms Pac-Man. That’s why if you take the board out of a Ms Pac-Man it’s just a Pac-Man pcb with a rom mod daughter board attached to it.

    I think the first Pac-man I remember was at a sleazy dive in North Portland Oregon called the Shamrock on Interstate Ave. I own a full sized original machine now that lives in my living room. It is the first arcade machine I ever bought. That is by far the best part about being a grown up, you can have vintage arcade games for your very own. Pac-man is the greatest video game ever made and my favorite game of all time.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 роки тому +2

      I think it's the best game too, it has incredible staying power, anybody enjoys playing it even 40 years later, and pretty much universal name recognition. If you say "Pac-Man" around a 5 year old, they know what you're talking about... and anybody older. It still earns money on location too, ANY location. You can put one in a modern arcade and people will play it, or even if it's a 1 off game at a restaurant people will play it. It's actually became part of culture, pretty incredible.

    I always loved this game and still do. In Girard Ohio there were a couple restaurants at that time where they had a Pac-Man machine and used to play it quite a bit. If I was able to; I would definitely own one of these Pac-Man machines. I wonder how many originals are still floating around out of curiosity. That includes good to non-functioning. Watching these videos, especially the repair ones are getting me interested in learning how to fix one of these machines. Its basically a giant computer programmed for one specific game after seeing the insides on these videos. Cedar Point was another place I played Pac-Man. A lot of those games had very high hours and a lot of use so the monitors were not as clear but they were still playable unless the monitor was severely malfunctioning. I always imagined having these game monitors multi-purpose; meaning that instead of just having the dedicated game image; modify them so they can feed regular video signals so that actual videos like movies or TV shows can play through the monitor and audio section; just by installing a switch to change the function. :))

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  4 роки тому

      You definitely could send a video signal into this monitor... they have a certain type of video input but there is an adapter board that can accept like a VGA signal and send to it, so you could adapt that signal in and display about whatever you wanted on the monitor...

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  6 років тому +1

      There was a yellow one with the pac-man sideart, and then a blue one with Ms. Pac-Man art and a slightly (very slightly) different cabinet. There was also a dark blue one for Super Pac-Man that had a big pac-man piece cut out of it for his mouth on the sides. If you saw a blue or black one without the artwork on the sides it was probably just repainted.

It's the only difference I can think of.

    I always throught it was interesting that in the US throughout the 80s, Pac-Man never had a set design for artwork, marketing, and merchandise. Different companies and artists with the Pac-Man liscense had their own interpretations of their character, like how he has big red eyes on this. I say in the US, because for all artwork and merchandise in Japan, Pac-Man had a consistent design (a smiling yellow ball with red boots and orange mittens) that would go on to appear in later games, like Pac-Land and the Pac-Man World trilogy.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  6 років тому

      It's one of those kitschy things that makes the cabinet cool imho

    • @jackiexkh
      @jackiexkh 6 років тому +2

      Joe's Classic Video Games Yeah. I guess it’s just a little strange for me because I grew up with Pac-Man World 2, so that’s how I always saw Pac-Man. Interestingly, Ms. Pac-Man was made by Midway without Namco’s permission, so artwork of her in the US was also pretty inconsistent. After Midway gave Namco the profits and rights to the game and character to avoid being sued, Namco redesigned Ms. Pac-Man to fit more with their official design of Pac-Man. Same applies to the other members of Pac-Man’s family that were created by Midway (Baby Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, and Professor Pac-Man).

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 5 років тому

      This cabinet art always struck me as weird too. I think there was a transition as in-game graphics gradually became more realistic: in the earliest days of video games, the art for games like Space Invaders, Indy 800 or Breakout had to play heavily on the player's imagination and it would typically look nothing like the crude graphics in the actual game. Later on, the graphics in the game could have a lot of detail and it made sense to be consistent. But Pac-Man was sort of on the cusp: do you do something more or less representational? In hindsight it made the most sense to stick closely to the in-game appearance of Pac-Man, make him a ball with a big pie-wedge mouth, because it became so iconic, but at the time that might not have been obvious.

    I always preferred playing on a "fast" machine, one in which the ghost stopped changing color for good on the 4th key instead of the 9th key. You had to remember how to adjust your patterns accordingly. This one's using the original board rotation.

  • @SD40Fan_Jason
    @SD40Fan_Jason 6 років тому +1

    What was the CRT and cap-kit you mentioned in the video?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  6 років тому +1

      The original monitors were called Cathode Ray Tube monitors, like the old glass tv's before the LCD tv's came out. Over time the capacitors on the monitor's printed circuit board dry out and lose their capacitance, so to fix an old monitor typically you have to replace all those capacitors, they're called a 'cap kit', a collection of all the electrolytic caps in the monitor. They usually need a little more work than that, but definitely need a cap kit at a minimum.

    • @SD40Fan_Jason
      @SD40Fan_Jason 6 років тому

      Right, I got that but you mentioned a replacement CRT? I am assuming you meant that because the majority of the tubes I've seen in consoles have got terrible case of burn-in.

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  6 років тому +1

      I didn't say anything about a replacement CRT, we just rebuilt the monitor board that was in it, that's the original tube. On Pac-Man burn in is hard to see because the maze never changes and hides the burn... it also has a smoked plexiglass bezel that hides the burn-in too.

    • @SD40Fan_Jason
      @SD40Fan_Jason 6 років тому

    Man, One more Pac-Man Saved! Yus!!! I've been looking for a cheap, (200 to 300$ broken or not broken pac-man machine) and was wondering if you had any ideas on anywhere I could look other than craigslist? I swiped a little lot of two Namco Plug n Plays, So i'm gonna turn one of them into a bartop or cocktail, and I've been looking for an old Pac-Man to have the real. Any Thoughts appriciated :D

      You just have to be patient, they'll pop up, you should be able to find one for that. Hard to find them with the paint still fully intact, though.

    • @arcademaster8823
      @arcademaster8823 7 років тому

      Yeah, I'm not too worried about perfect paint, I've found plenty of 200 dollar pac-man or ms pac-man's, but the 200 dollar shipping kills me :( If you ever happen to find one, if you don't mind shooting me a link, that would be very appriciated :D

    13:49 Ironically, that only makes it easier to play, and therefore, they're earning less money.
    Pac-Man moves so much faster than the Ghosts, and as such, it's far less likely to get caught by a ghost.
    It trivializes the whole game, so IDK why they thought they'd make more money.

    Nice job on the re-cap and retouching the little inperfections
    Surprised the cabinet isn't mdf.
    What camera are you using in the video?
    The fact this video is a bit older I hope to be able to find one fairly cheap for filming.
    the camera not the game lol.

    I have horror stories of the first og pac man cabinet I have played on. It was at a now defunct arcade, screen was just scratched up to death, control overlay was gone, but worst of all, it had an ANALOG joystick. That made the game unplayable.

    I'm almost positive that the heat damage you pointed out is from people absentmindedly holding their lit cigarettes while playing. People used to smoke everywhere. If you're under 30 you probably don't remember those days.

    why do the fly backs blow up after a cap job?

    • @LyonsArcade
      @LyonsArcade  5 років тому

      From what I understand the original G07 flys are problematic (well, I know they are because it's happened to me often), and after you put in fresh caps it gets all the voltages back where they're supposed to be, which stresses the fly and makes it blow. They'll literally break in half.

    Ply wood? I would've thought these cabinets were made of press-glued layered ply wood, what they sometimes call composite. Although, composite might be the reconstituted wood made of wood pulp and glue.

    The "slow" game, according to Ken Uston's "Mastering Pac Man." His book has a pattern that can only be used on the first board. Apparently, the arcade owners would change the settings if the people where setting high scores too easily on it.
