  • HAMBURG: Free travel throughout Germany! First federal state to give its students a 49-euro ticket!
Hamburg is planning to be the first federal state to introduce a free Germany ticket for students. From September 1st, around 210,000 children and young people can order the ticket free of charge and use it on local public transport across the country - whether for the way to school or for trips to other cities. The city is investing 14 million euros in this and is sending a strong signal for the mobility of the younger generation. Many Hamburg residents are enthusiastic about this idea and see it as an important step to give children and young people more freedom of movement.
But while Hamburg supports its students, the future of the 49-euro ticket for the general public remains uncertain. There is already discussion about a price increase, as transport companies are suffering from rising costs and falling revenues. If there is not enough revenue, timetable cuts in rural regions could be the result. In October, the state transport ministers want to decide whether the ticket will become more expensive. However, Hamburg's students are likely to be spared from this, while the rest of the population faces an uncertain future.
