I am an American who feels a special kinship with Sweden because ALL of my great grandparents were born there, because the Swedes love cats (yammer yammer) and because I love the book "A Man Called Ove" (at least I love its English translation).
Recky's channel adds to my love of Sweden, a love which has surprisingly survived Lutefisk (surely any other tradition from the old country would have been better).
Although I do chuckle at the American reverence for the Dala horse, a Swedish tradition that dates back less than 200 years. For Swedes, 200 years is, like, yesterday. I mean, in my ancestural parish of Krisdala, the church that was built over a millemium ago to replace the burned down original is still referred to as "the new church". For reference, my part of the USA was settled only 150 years ago.
Keep up the good work my friend.

Thing is Sweden has already told NATO they are fully open to the full militarization of the Gotland island and a place to station NATO defense forces.

Sweden and USA fought together in the first barbary war for a little while. USA & Sweden signed a mutual defense treaty days before Sweden became a NATO member.

Sweden is already paying 2% as of NATOs definition. Somehow Sweden used to have a different, more pessimistic, definition, where we excluded a lot of costs to other parts of the state budget.

It didn't sneak anywhere. They were literally checking out characteristics. The Navy’s purpose was to find out how stealthy the sub was and to study ways to detect and counter the sub. Sinking it in an exercise was not the purpose. Think about it … if you want to see how effective the sub is, you’d likely start it at different points, nearer and farther, to observe its characteristics. In fact, you might intentionally refrain from ‘sinking’ it and allow it to approach as closely as possible to study the acoustic patterns as they vary with distance. Apparently Sweden really wanted to sell some submarines.
None of the preceding should be taken to assert that submarines are not a threat. They most certainly are! The purpose of the post is to demonstrate just how unrealistic a pre-deployment ASW exercise conducted for a small carrier group is. This should also demonstrate that the single sensationalistic story is just that - a single example from, likely, dozens/hundreds of exercises. By itself, it proves nothing. The SSK may well be, and likely is, a very difficult opponent to defeat but we’ve just demonstrated that the very notion of an SSK-carrier encounter is almost absurdly unlikely.

The US tends to design foreign exercises in such a way that its almost a guaranteed US defeat. US Capabilities will be restricted, for example not allowing active sonar use, not allowing ships to maneuver, not allowing use of ASW helos or bringing in P-3 or P-8 support. Its designed to be a very difficult scenario where a US ship won't have most of its advantages, while the foreign opposing force will. You learn much more from defeats in life than you do from won scenarios. This isn't to take away from the very capable platforms allies possess, but one reason why you have to take these exercises with a massive grain of salt.

Thank you for the very interesting and video as well as your very informative reaction and analysis. Sweden has been helping out NATO for a long time. And I know that the U.S. would have come to the aid of Sweden all along but now it's official.

Sure! You are very correct. But then again going to the doctor costs me 30 USD. And if I need surgery… I only pay 10 bucks a night during recovery. And this is for everyone. No matter if you are high income or low income. So what do I choose? Highly taxes? Or the US?

Sweden pays about half, per person, for healthcare, compared to the US.
      *United States $12,555*
      Switzerland $8,049
      Germany $8,011
      Austria $7,275
      Netherlands $6,729
      France $6,630
      Belgium $6,600
      *Sweden $6,438*
      Australia $6,372
      Canada $6,319
      United Kingdom $5,493
      Japan $5251
Sweden has announced that it intends to increase military spending 64% by 2028. Ultimately, all of the government social services/programs that Swedish people enjoy, including healthcare, will be wiped away to pay for bombs, missiles, fighter jets (etc.)

Recky, if it's any consolation to your more pacifist countrymen, Sweden joining NATO helps defend the smaller nations who were formerly part of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact.

  • @kirknitz3794

Well this American welcomes Sweden to NATO. And as for some Americans being upset that the US is frequently called upon to help protect other countries, that is not so for me. At the close of WW2, most of Europe was in shambles. The US was only nation that was unharmed from WW2 and we became the world's cop. If that vacuum had not been filled, some other less generous country would have stepped in. I have learned two patriotic expressions, one of Ukraine: Slava Ukraini and for Israel: Am Israel Chai. I think I need to learn one for Sweden.
