  • i-cab caught this one realllllly well.
Camera mounted in rear facing locomotive (I am told it was 4th out in consist of 4 engines).
It occurred in Illinois, earlier this year.
Watch, especially to the left -- watch the trees bend, debris in the air, and you can actually see the tornado pass from right to left.
The trestle seen at the end of the video was moved out of alignment to the left 18 inches -- the tank car was a load of Ethylene Oxide -- nasty stuff.

The car coming at the locomotive was ethylene oxide that is indeed used in warheads. It did not leak. There was another car in the train with the "shock fluid". That is the one that leaked and caused an evacuation.

It was later revealed that the tanker was carrying ethylene glycol (sometimes referred to by its nickname, "really nasty stuff") It's a testimony to the structural integrity of that tanker that this video (and the locomotives) survived. For the record, this camera was recording automatically-- there was a crew in the forward locomotive, but this cab was unoccupied.

      Not exactly millions of tons

    • @cdavid8139

The car contacting the locomotive was carrying ethylene oxide and not ethylene glycol. This tankcar did not rupture or leak. Another tankcar of hazardous material did leak and a nearby town was evacuated..

kleetus92 Ethylene glycol is antifreeze and it is toxic. The one that is in food and some kinds of alcohol is proplylene glycol. They are somewhat related but still very different.

It’s kind of common misconception about train tanker cars. They are extremely durable as they are designed to survive derailments and crashes. If the car was going full speed into the stopped locomotive then it may very likely would have breached and started leaking, which would of lead to a fire but they don’t explode unless for example they get blown up or hit directly by a projectile.
The fact the car was already derailed and being pushed across the tie beams helped slow it down enough and helped slow down the remain wrecking cars. It also probably helped a tremendous amount the fact just as the locomotive was going over a bridge so the tanker car got reflected on impact and went over the bridge into the water below.

    • @KlLLERROBOT99
      @KlLLERROBOT99 4 роки тому +2

Hari Kishore Even if it was empty the residual vapor from the built up leftover liquid in the tank is enough to cause a fire or explosion if the tanker is hit or hits hard enough.

    • @andrewlucia865
      @andrewlucia865 4 роки тому +3

It might not have even been carrying hazardous materials in the first place, tankers carry more than just oil or dangerous chemicals, something that a lot of people forget because we hear so many stories about tankers blowing up or leaking something hazardous. for all we know, that tanker could have been carrying a non-flammable/non-toxic liquid used for the food industry.

It crosses at 1:02-1:09 It is really hard to see until the last four seconds of the crossing (1:05-1:09), on the left. At 1:07, 1:08, you can actually see some debris! There also appears to be a power flash out of frame to the left at 1:10. The part that really makes this surreal is from 1:11 on. Great video!

I remember that day well, it had gone from very cold to very warm inside of a day in the middle of winter...the kind of day where you know the weather is going to be real bad. A supercell storm blew up north of about Freeport that afternoon, and headed east along the Illinois-Wisconsin line. I was working in downtown Chicago, and the sky along the northern horizon was a mass of black clouds. While heading home the crew reported that all trains were stopping at either Crystal Lake or Woodstock, a tornado had hit a freight train near Harvard.

I worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Western RR back in the early 70's. Trains coming out of Denver heading west on the mainline soon encounter the Rocky Mountains at a place called Rocky Flats. The trains must start trekking their way up a steep winding grade and a big curve known as the Big 10 curve. The Big 10 curve is right at the mouth of Coal Creek Canyon which at times is one of the windiest places in America. The cold air on the high peaks sinks and that air comes flowing down those canyons and creates hurricane force 100 mph + winds. Over the years the D&RGW had many derailments at the Big 10 curve. The wind would blow the trains over and cause massive derailments..including the engines. Since the D&RGW was a mountain RR they always had at least 4 headend engines and often times 2 helper engines at the back to push them up the grade. I went to many of those wrecks during my years. I was always mesmerized by the wreckage at a derailment. It's truly something you have to see to believe.
    Wind is extremely powerful. 🚂

Can you help us understand what we just saw? I was expecting this video to have commentary, and it doesn't.
What do you think about this crash?
For sure, some of the cars were irreparably damaged, but do you think most of them could have just been put back on the tracks, hooked back up, and sent on their way?
I don't think anyone would have been back there, but what about the cargo?
Do you think it the type of cargo it carried would have damaged by such a crash, or not? 🤔
Assuming the cargo wasn't eggs or glass , or something fragile.

    • @TheNoiseySpectator
      @TheNoiseySpectator Рік тому +1

Second, the wind flows _down_ the Canyon at 100 mph.
      Darn!
      Traveling down is easy.
I was wondering if there was a way to use that strong of a wind to drive a train _back up_ 😞

    • @rapturebound197
      @rapturebound197 Рік тому +1

      @@TheNoiseySpectator Hi Noisy.
There is no narration because the camera that is capturing this video is mounted in the windshield of the rear engine that is facing backwards. My guess is this train had 3 engines at the headend and this was the last in that string. They typically always face that rear engine backwards and none of them are ever manned - hence why you hear the crash but don't hear anybody talking (or screaming..lol)
High winds or tornados naturally get the lightest boxcars swaying and rocking first until they derail and that sets off a chain reaction which is what you saw here. You'll notice by the time that Grain car right behind the engine goes over the cars behind it have already derailed. Thankfully that Grain car didn't take the engine over with it.
Things get really crazy when you see that Tanker heading for the engine. That Tanker was most likely empty but the weight of those cars behind it pushing it is tremendous. Had that been a fully loaded Tanker full of something flammable this could have been a real disaster. Why do I think it was empty? It would have hit the back of that engine where the camera was with MUCH MORE FORCE!
YIKES. I'm certain the Engineer and Brakemen in the lead engine could feel what was going on and were petrified at what might have been. I know I would!
To answer your question can the derailed box cars be put on the track - the answer is Yes..BUT only if their damage is not so bad that they cannot stay together long enough to be pulled very slowly to the nearest maintenance train yard and undergo extensive repairs.
Most people don't know this but the wheels 🚃 and axels on the boxcars (called 'Trucks') are not actually fastened to the box car itself. Sounds crazy I know but you'll just have to trust me. To explain it here is too much but because those Trucks aren't hard fastened to the boxcar is the reason you see train wheels all over the place at a wreck.
There were no such cameras like this when I was a Railroader so to actually watch a derailment as it happens is quite fascinating to me.
My name is Mike. Thanks for listening friend! 🚂 Take Care!

EF5’s have not only derailed entire trains but thrown them many yards from the tracks. We are talking about something with forces that are difficult to comprehend. Wind power increases by the cube of wind speed. So an EF4/5 tornado can be many many many times stronger and more devastating than a EF1/2 or even 3. A tornado with 200 mph winds is 8x more powerful than one with 100 mph winds as an example. The Bridge Creek-Moore 1999 tornado had estimated wind speeds of 300mph. That’s 27x more powerful than a low end EF2. This tornado was likely an EF1-2 and it still did this. Nature is crazy!

Hello to everybody on UA-cam. You probably won’t believe this but I was the RANZENBERGER driver That picked up the crew that was driving that train. The train line is called the Harvard subdivision it runs from proviso to Up in to Wisconsin. After picking up the crew I had to take them to a medical clinic so they can get drug tested for blood and urine. To see if they were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. From what I’ve been told it’s standard procedure. After an accident like that. If nobody’s familiar with the company they transport railroad train crews in a white van. Mr. Bill CNW

The weight of the locomotive kept it on the tracks, but the rest of the train didn't stand a chance.
I live in western Arkansas, and we have a healthy respect for twisters. This is why we tell newcomers it's not safe to stay in your car, or even your tractor trailer. You're safer just hugging the ground in a ditch.
Everyone thinks a tornado "touches down", but it really doesn't do that very much. Look at news footage of a flyover on a storms path. There's usually not much earth damage. Mostly the tail stays a couple feet off of the surface.Sure, the house is gone, but the basement survives. Even slab built homes still have the cement floor.
Now those big mile wide boogers can and do rip the earth some, though not deeply. They have a more dispersed airflow area, so they behave more like straight-line winds, which tend to be more ground conforming.
Just a heads up for those who haven't had the pleasure of these babies. And in this age of climate uncertainties, tornado ally could move to your home state.

@robertgift So you'll know, this crew did not know they were moving into a violent storm. They just saw a wall of rain in front of them and no actual funnel cloud. They were not notified by Omaha that this weather condition existed, so they did their job and kept the train moving. Form their point of view, it was business as usual right up until the air blew.

I seem to recall, a few years back, several railroads saying that they were establishing severe weather alert programs in their dispatch centers. The idea was the programs could alert dispatchers to severe weather alerts affecting locations along their lines so they could stop trains from entering the area until the alert was over, or make crews in the area aware of the alert so they could watch for activity and, maybe, take action to possibly avoid severe weather. From the number of trains that have been affected by severe weather, this year, what's happened to those programs? Did they get cut because Wall Street idiots say they cost too much? 😢

The train: Casually going down the tracks.
The tornado: I’m about to end this mans whole career.
Also the tornado: Crashes the train.
The trains freight cars: Already derailed.
The train when it stops: Phew. That was a close one.
The tanker car with the rest of the freight cars:
I wOkE uP iN a NeW bUgAtTi!
Also the tanker: Pwns the engines.
    After the wreckage:

This train was definitely in violation of several rules. Trains are not allowed to move in areas with tornado warnings. Letting this train operate was bad enough, but over a trestle even! ...should have this dispatcher out of a job immediately, or perhaps teach him/her that weather will always win.

  • @brahma552010

that is an extremely unique video because you actually see what it's like inside of a tornado for a short moment until all the chaos occurs from it lol. the craziest part is the rest of the train coming out of the mist. i assumed the whole thing minus the engines had been derailed but that added a little bit of humor to it lol.

Most, if not all, locomotives these days have 'dash cams'. It's to deal with grade crossing accidents (car gets hit by train) in court.

  • @CentralPennRailProductions

It's a standard operating procedure on both Union Pacific and Burlington Northern Santa Fe, and for obvious reason, their tracks cover several miles of tornado prone areas. Data source is TRAINS Sunset Route Article: SOP to stop trains within 20 miles of a tornado warning until an NOAA all clear is sounded. The dispatcher should have been well aware of the conditions, considering they have a constant data feed of weather systems, especially in tornado alley.

Not sure if there was a warning for this tornado. To be fair tornadoes are not expected on January 7 near the IL-WI border. There were 2 or 3 tornadoes that day. The first was not warned as I recall. Not sure if this was the first.

The tank car contained Ethylene Oxide, typically hauled as a refrigerated liquid, I doubt it would errupt so sudden, but this stuff can cause cancer when expose to heavy amounts.

Probably due to they are heavier than the other cars. Most treight cars weigh about 210,000 lbs. The new diesel locomotives are about 350,000 lbs.

It was scary!! I live in Boone County. There was tornado warning in boon county. I lost two big hay barns from tornado. VERY STRANGE to have a tornado in January with all the snow with 15oF. So on the next day, it warmed up to 70F with strange cloud and with EXTREME foggy.
I know the biggest tornado is on the centerville Rd Poplar Grove, IL . I work at Edwards Apple Orchard and Orchard lost everything.
This train and video was in McHenry County.

It’s hard to see but I believe that starting at 1:00 you begin to see the trees suddenly and violently be blown over which tells me that at that moment the tornado was practically on top of them approaching from the right and about to hit the train

  • @TrainSimMaster-sf7ju

@MSGfilms... you cant turn a train around in motion. Try moving about 3000 tons at about 75mph and turn it around.

That excuse would never hold up in a lawsuit. Radio communication is top priority on railroads, but unfortunately it doesn't come across that way. Trains should be stopped 20 miles in advance to a tornado warning, plenty of time to contact the crew. I take it this happened in winter/spring 2008 from reports that I saw.

Kinda neat, you can hear as the air brakes engage when the lines break just before the (grain/hopper?) car is pulled off by a trailing car. Then the tanker leading the rest of the momentum forward, was expecting the engine to get pulverized but it seemed to only be struck a glancing blow.
