The road was planned and started long before the suggestion of a toll was raised, its a replacement for an old road that failed due to years of neglect and under funding from EVERY previous government, why wasn't Transmission Gully tolled? Because most of the people who work at NZTA and Parliament travel it twice a day...
Protest as hard as you can. You have already paid for that roading. Don't pay twice for the same thing. Successive goverments since Muldoon days have collected money from New Zealander's under the guise of fuel tax for roading in NZ. For many years AA would report in it's magazine how much more money was collected than how much was spen Usually this amounted to around $650 million each year. A lot of money when a new house then cost $15 to $20 thousand. Or a gallon of petrol was $1. That is about 22 cents per litre. Where did the excess money go? Where is it still going? I would be more inclined towards paying a toll if I was not already paying 10 to 15 cents toll for every kilometer I drive. And of course a little transparency from the government would help.Where does our road tax get spent?
If you can afford to pay to travel on a toll road, you will save time, fuel, vehicle maintenance, etc; you're getting benefits that will hopefully offset the cost of the toll, so you potentially break even. But if you can not afford to travel on a toll road, all the savings for those that can afford the toll, now become a liability for those that can not. It'll take longer and cost more in fuel and maintenance, etc, to travel between the same two locations. What toll roads and user-pays does, is increase the gap between the "haves" and "have-nots". Aka, the poor get poorer, and the rich get richer. A good society is one where everyone is given the same opportunities to prosper, not one that creates obstacles for its vulnerable members. Pooling our resources through a fair tax system that benefits everyone, is how we enable the "have-nots" a fighting chance to become the "haves".
The locals are just being selfish. This government has made it their mission to eliminate landlord poverty. Imagine the warmvfeeling they would get knowing a poor landlord can still afford their mid winter fiji holiday.
Every business puts their costs like depreciation of plant, interest on money as cost against tax. This has always been like that, for one interest on money doesn't mean added value as money is always depreciating, however, the costs for running a business have an amount of deductibility. Robertson reversed this for people renting out property only. If this were the case for all business types, then it would be an even playing field, BUT, business would not and could not function and eventually you wouldn't have a job. Nothing lasts, requires maintenance and new replacement plant etc and this act keeps the economy going. It is not a tax break. What isn't fair, is that if you put money in the bank, you get taxed upon your interest gained. If your favourable interest equals inflation, you have not increased that wealth, but just kept afloat, but you have been charged tax upon your money of which you have already paid tax and therefore are double dipped and now, you actually have less in the bank. Businesses cannot operate like this.

We have been paying large amounts of petrol tax for decades to build and maintain the roading system. The roads have never been "for free". The government needs to crack down on the outrageous exorbitant profits the road building companies charge whenever the contract is for a 'government project'!
At the end of the day. Your community want a new road then someone has to pay for it!! How do you get to provide this money? Labour has overspend on everything!! So what is the answer. Sop the work on the road!! What is the answer

People want better infrastructure but also refuse to pay for it. NZ is out of touch with the rest of the world. In Australia, far more complex projects are delivered and paid for quickly through tolls. Large parts of the NZ population whinge about hospitals, roads being stuck in the 1950s but also don't want to pay a cent for it. Clueless. Edit: anyone who doesn't want to use toll roads does not have to. Its not as though anyone will be forced to use it.
I agree but you missed the point They have been waiting forever and was never supposed to be tolled and they are sort of forced as the alternate route is not a real road .
A lack of toll roads is why the government can’t afford to maintain any of our infrastructure. The Remutaka road was free and they couldn’t afford to maintain it. Hold up. They’re putting a toll road on a new road? Why do people care that it’s being tolled? The new road likely wouldn’t exist if they weren’t going to toll it.
The road was planned and started long before the suggestion of a toll was raised, its a replacement for an old road that failed due to years of neglect and under funding from EVERY previous government, why wasn't Transmission Gully tolled?
What are you talking about? No tolls were planned until this government needed to balance its budget and pay for billions in tax cuts for the rich and interest deductions for landlord.
how backward do we want to go, back to the horse and cart ? Tolls roads are the only way to go to get ahead, nothing is for free, never has been.
The govt should pay for it. Instead of borrowing money to give a tiny tax break. Or tax cuts to landlords
WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS. It has been known for years the old road would eventually CLOSE. So they should have BUDGETED FOR THE NEW ROAD. Governments lack of previous action has bought the old road to a close. NOT OUR FAULT. WE PAAAAYYYYY OUR ROAD TAXES. Do the job you are supposed to do look after the infrastructure. WE'VE PAID.
Better than labours solution...... borrow, borrow, borrow
Those people probably play barely any tax anyways. Make them pay the toll. 😂
I agree but you missed the point
They have been waiting forever and was never supposed to be tolled and they are sort of forced as the alternate route is not a real road .
A lack of toll roads is why the government can’t afford to maintain any of our infrastructure. The Remutaka road was free and they couldn’t afford to maintain it. The saddle is free and they can’t afford to maintain it. Te Ahu a Turanga (new road) is twice the size of the saddle, they need tolls to pay for it.
We should only toll.., where there is an alternative route
Alternative and safe

True.. we need to live within our means.. but that doesn’t mean that residents of a region need to travel on roads that are not safe/ permanent…, we are one nation..
Aren’t there two alternatives to this new road already?
There is an alternative, it’s called the saddle and it’s right next to the new road
@@ThuderDragon2408 Alternative AND safe
Ok letz make everything user pays.......including public transport!
Toll ,toll ,toll....us the other route if you dont like it as we are broke .
