It's incredible how they make even bad possession teams look like actually capable of playing possession. I think the best comparison to the England national football team is the US National basketball team. It looks like they don’t play with any pride or passion.
Trent played midfield for his passing range to ping balls over the top into the attackers running in behind. Southgate then proceeds to play Foden on the left out of position (who's not running in behind), Kane (who drops deep and doesn't run in behind), and Saka on the right who hugs the touchline and tries to beat the fullback out wide to get a cross in. Then the media jump on Trent as though it's his fault that his only option is to pass sideways to Saka so he can run at the fullback. I'm not saying Trent in midfield was the way to go, but if you're going to try that, then stick Gordon on the left, Watkins or Toney upfront, and maybe even Bowen on the right. They'll make runs in behind and give Trent something to aim at. It's just indicative of a manager who has no idea what he's doing, and is trying to shoehorn in all his "superstars" and not build an actual team with a philosophy and style of play.

Trent is the best creator in the squad, but shouldn't be expected to retain possession when pressed or win possession back. When England are looking to build an attack or counterattack though, trent's the man and in that role at liverpool, pushing into midfield in the transition to create a numerical advantage and link the midfield to the forwards played, he's been brilliant this season. This is just another example of Southgate being utterly, hopelessly tactically inept. He tried to play trent as a full midfielder, when this isn't how he's been utilised in the midfield for Liverpool.
The only consolation is the knockout games are going to expose England for what they are currently under Southgate. As an Englishman I'm waiting to see how this team performs when the pressure is put on them.

Too slow in the build up, looks like they don't have any plan when they have the ball. Get Foden off that left side and play him central 10. Bellingham drops alongside rice, Gordon left palmer right and get kane off earlier for the pace of Watkins if its not going well for him. When kane comes deep and picks up the ball he needs to fire balls down the wing for Gordon, palmer or saka.
I think that an other factor that might impact this team chemistry is that the Media would spark an outrage if for example Kane wouldn't start, he's way too big and famous. Just my opinion

Brian Clough used to talk about simplicity. As a manager you have one of two choices: 1. Pick a way in which you want your team to play and then find players to fit the roles needed. 2. Identify 3 or 4 top players and then build a style of play around them. Simple. What has happened here is that Southgate decided that he wanted the team to play in certain way but then he goes on to pick the "best" players, completely disregarding whether those players could actually play in the roles he wanted them in. Furthermore, this very same formation has been used to score LOADS of goals in the PL last season, so it has nothing to do with that per se. An example: Kane just does not work in this type of thing, not because he is a bad player at all, but because it requires a skillset that he just doesn't have. Not that he is unique in that regard either as I can think of a ton of worldclass strikers in the last 20 years that would have sucked badly here too.
The issue also is that they keep getting lucky draws. I mean this group, 5 points and you win the group? And now they're in the side of the table avoidi,g Germany, Spain, Portugal and France? As a person from England, it’s nice to finally hear someone saying the same things that every England fan is thinking whether they deny it or not. I think the thing that really hit home is when you mention that it’s almost like the players don’t care, which may not be the case but that’s the way it’s looking right now. Southgate has been a running issue now for the past several tournaments and clearly skips any chemistry building exercises in training. I do think that we have one of the most talented squads in the euros up there with Germany, Spain, and France, but egos and bad managerial decisions show otherwise and it’s just sad.
Bellingham should play next to Rice, let Foden play in the 10 have Gordon on the left, then bring Gomez on at left back unless Shaws back then play him, maybe even start Wakins or palmer.

I think the best comparison to the England national football team is the US National basketball team. It looks like they don’t play with any pride or passion.
Trent played midfield for his passing range to ping balls over the top into the attackers running in behind. Southgate then proceeds to play Foden on the left out of position (who's not running in behind), Kane (who drops deep and doesn't run in behind), and Saka on the right who hugs the touchline and tries to beat the fullback out wide to get a cross in. Then the media jump on Trent as though it's his fault that his only option is to pass sideways to Saka so he can run at the fullback.
I'm not saying Trent in midfield was the way to go, but if you're going to try that, then stick Gordon on the left, Watkins or Toney upfront, and maybe even Bowen on the right. They'll make runs in behind and give Trent something to aim at. It's just indicative of a manager who has no idea what he's doing, and is trying to shoehorn in all his "superstars" and not build an actual team with a philosophy and style of play.

When England are looking to build an attack or counterattack though, trent's the man and in that role at liverpool, pushing into midfield in the transition
to create a numerical advantage and link the midfield to the forwards played, he's been brilliant this season.
This is just another example of Southgate being utterly, hopelessly tactically inept. He tried to play trent as a full midfielder, when this isn't how he's been utilised in the midfield for Liverpool.

I think the blame being solely placed on Southgate is redundant at this time. Like you said, they are playing a team with players not even playing the highest level of football. There is no formation you could put these players in on this planet that should be resulting in such terrible football.

When kane comes deep and picks up the ball he needs to fire balls down the wing for Gordon, palmer or saka.
Rice can run forward, he does it very well for arsenal, but in order for him to do that we need to be pressing higher and actually getting forward!
I think that an other factor that might impact this team chemistry is that the Media would spark an outrage if for example Kane wouldn't start, he's way too big and famous. Just my opinion

It's not all about the manager. Players have to step up.
Brian Clough used to talk about simplicity. As a manager you have one of two choices: 1. Pick a way in which you want your team to play and then find players to fit the roles needed. 2. Identify 3 or 4 top players and then build a style of play around them. Simple. What has happened here is that Southgate decided that he wanted the team to play in certain way but then he goes on to pick the "best" players, completely disregarding whether those players could actually play in the roles he wanted them in. Furthermore, this very same formation has been used to score LOADS of goals in the PL last season, so it has nothing to do with that per se. An example: Kane just does not work in this type of thing, not because he is a bad player at all, but because it requires a skillset that he just doesn't have. Not that he is unique in that regard either as I can think of a ton of worldclass strikers in the last 20 years that would have sucked badly here too.
