How Pitmaster Matt Horn Developed His Signature ‘West Coast-Style' Barbecue in Oakland - Smoke Point
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лют 2021
- Horn Barbecue pitmaster Matt Horn fell in love with barbecue from a young age, when he learned to get a feel for how to make juicy, tender, and smoky brisket, ribs, and other meats from his grandfather’s smoker without even using a thermometer. Now, he cultivates his “West Coast-style” barbecue, inspired by a combination of Central Texas barbecue, traditions from the deep south, and Horn’s Bay Area roots, at his restaurant in Oakland.

You know he's a good business owner and great boss when he's getting interviewed and gives credit to his employees by name. Leaders take blame, and give credit.
Agreed. humbling guy
Totally agree, never heard it put so succinctly. Wish I had him for a boss.
respect
The man has skills and he’s humble, all the characteristics of a successful business owner.
He can teach Trump a thing or two on leadership
you can't argue with the price of bbq when you watch videos like this
Yeah. I won't pay for an expensive steak dinner when I can make it exactly the way I like it at home with better sides but I can't do that at home.
@@Woozlewuzzleable oh yah, there r so many steak secret out in the internet, y spend the money when u can just make it at home
@@Woozlewuzzleable If not? Why not? Go for it!

Our bbq guy raises his beef and chickens and pigs and passes on the savings 😉 I had better but he's a great guy and for 25$ you get a whole chicken 1/2lb brisket and 1/2 rack spareribs and smoked scrapple
"In life there is a certain measure of patience that we all must exercise...there are things we all want to accomplish, that we all want to achieve. It relates to bbq in the sense of where in order to get the product that we have, there is patience that takes place within the cooking process but also the person that is preparing the food and we get a result that is reflective of excellence." BBQ Philosophy...love it.
What an incredible guy. You could just tell what a master he is. How clean his establishment is. Really incredible. I want some of that meat!!!
I mean, he just opened like 3 weeks ago.
Actually 6 months ago
His meat?
Hats off to you Matt, true Bbq is an art that requires patience, persistence and dedication. Support locals businesses and eateries if you can during these times. 🙏
@S Hendriks All animals should be exterminated tbh

@S Hendriks tasty, tasty murder.
if meat is murder, why does it taste so damn good?
@S Hendriks ummm.....
Everything looks amazing but those oxtails, my god. This guy knows his craft.
This man really reminds me of the great sushi masters, with his attitude skill and attention to detail. I would sure love to try his BBQ one day.
Im from Aus and would travel to the US just for that BBQ...
I'm in Aus too and I'd do the same
Also go to bed bruh it's late af here
In the UK and wish we could get BBQ close to this.
I agree. I wish BBQ was more popular in Poland.
I'm 20 minutes away
Same here, dude why don’t they have place like that here? Or if they attempt to do that, it’s crazy expensive!! Bbq is blue collar food
this guy could easily talk for hours about his bbq journey and i wouldn't want it to end
This dude is a legend before he even opened up shop in Oak.
... was* a legend before ...
The pride you take in your art really shows. And your attitude towards your customers everything about this speaks of integrity and work ethics. To go to work every day knowing that you love your job must be satisfying.

This is some good Texas style bbq
Learned a ton of priceless tips!
20 seconds into this video, and I've already saved this restaurant in Google Maps for the next time I'm in Oakland
I live nearby. Healthy lines weekly. It is absolutely worth the wait. Well deserved success. Congrats to Matt Horn & team!
Hands down the best BBQ I’ve ever had! Well worth the wait, and keep doing ya thang
Man, those beef ribs look great!
Looks good! Tx style bbq
I dunno why, all the things to watch on UA-cam or TV, I love watching BBQ stories. Love watching Rodney Scott stuff, still think he deserves his own show.
Looks like he is doing everything exactly the way it should be done. Nice place, nice work, nice owner, and NICE LOOKING grub. Makes me wish I lived in Oakland.
Best series on this channel
Hits different that same place got violated by fires & vandalism. This deserves a comeback.
Ya’ll doing Bay Area proud with these features...keep it up! 👍
I will be trying them this weekend. Their right in my backyard. Lol
Same brah, definitely gonna check it out tomorrow
Do not forget the bread pudding. You will not regret it. Mark my words.

How was it?
I might see you there
From Richmond
An artist in his craft.
It’s the love he gives to his food. Looks delicious.
just realized this place was the former spot of my favorite chicken and waffles, Brown Sugar Kitchen. i definitely need to stop by for a plate
RIP

As a person from East Carolina I’m always skeptical about other states bbq except Tennessee and Texas. This man NAILED IT!! Everybody has their own style and techniques and I wish I could try his.

love the way how this gentleman carries himself, keep up the good work out there!
Damn this smoke point serie makes me want to catch a flight and taste as many bbq spots as I can. Love the simplicity of bbq.
It looks like he is doing everything right, he has No competition, I am so glad Q is being offered in a bbq desert....
Beautiful work and amazing results.
Iv eaten all around the world, and worked in several Michelin star restaurants. Horn barbeque is God Tier; and Mat is literally one of the most humble people I’ve met in my life. One of only a few reasons I would every go back to the Bay Area.
The work, time, and knowledge that go into preparing great food are so underappreciated!
The commentary in the look of that meat brought a tear to my eye
BBQ is the food I miss the most from the US. That and Mexican.
Being from Louisiana, I can definitely see the southern influence that he received from his grandpa. This looks absolutely delicious!
Mr. Horn,
That sir looks amazing. If I find myself anywhere on the west coast in the near future I will most assuredly be stopping by. My mouth watered through this whole video......
His beef ribs look 🔥🔥🔥 no 🧢
I respect the hell out of the fact that they're just using salt and pepper as the rub!
People get so carried away with having a complicated spice rub they forget barbecue is all about the meat.
Sorry no spicy food pun today! *I'd hate to rub it in.*
umm it wasnt just a salt and pepper rub, he listed like 3 more spices mixed in after he said S&P
Oakland proud!
¨Labor of Love¨ ...Bless your heart Pit Master Matt..You inherited a Golden Heart from your ancestors, Blessed be all of them. One day I will visit Horn BBQ, Best wishes from Ecuador-South America
Mans killin' it
Im gonna try this place next time im in oakland.god bless this man
He knows his history. Great job
That is some serious work/love/passion!!!!!
all of this look awesome. and this guy definitely knows what hes doing.. but this guy is cooking and serving step by step exactly like almost every "new school" Texas style BBQ place. Definitely nothing wrong with that but this is Texas Barbecue.
I love Texas BBQ
I don't think you get it. This is in the Bay Area where there really is NO good Texas BBQ.
@@pumpupthevolume4775 literally this, I'm hoping that going here will give me the proper bbq welcoming I deserve
Been in Oakland 13 years how have I never heard of this spot!
It just opened up recently in pandemic
Master of his craft!
That is type of cooking. You seem to take so much pride and passion when you are cooking. Keep doing what you are doing. Be blessed 🙏
Yeah you’re right
Great behind the scenes view of a BBQ business on a large scale. It's definitely a labor of love and an art to turn out fine food!
Very nice setup in and out of the premises. Lucky man
American Cuisine at its finest, and proud to share with gourmets all over the world.
That's how you know it's done right, all instinct and minimal technology. Definitely visiting this place within the next few days.
Looks like I’m taking a trip to Oakland (from South Bay) soon. Can’t wait to try this.
I’m going too. I’m from Oakland, but currently in Texas. First place I’m going to as soon as I head home
Sooooo Good!!! Dropped by a few weeks ago. Definitely worth the trip
beautiful techniques. very well done
Was just there last weekend and on a Saturday got there a little past opening the line was already far down the street, they had a dj going for the patio area out back playing all the right music, waited about an hour and a half in line but let me tell you, as soon as we got in there and ordered some of the brisket and beef rib with a side of brisket beans and Mac n cheese and maaaaaaaan. I was in heaven, the beef rib was exploding with flavor and would literally melt in your mouth and the brisket was tender and juicy as could be. I hadn’t had bbq like that since I was in Texas and tried all the spots out in Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio. 12/10 recommend if you don’t mind the wait but that’s pretty standard at most bbq joints like this. You have the option to order ahead of time and just pick up too
wow...that is a hell of an operation. from that beautiful indoor pit to all the ones outside, including the monster on top of the flat bed trailer. doing all that volume but keeping such high standards, kudos to matt and the team. would love to try some one day
Eating Horn Barbecue takeout as I watch this video 😈😈😈 this new series on Oakland restaurants is awesome Eater!
Seems like a wonderful man who truly loves his craft. Way to represent CA, good sir! Will definitely swing by next time I’m in the town!

Amazing work. currently drooling for some of that awesome barbeque
And that is why I won't go vegan.
Oh man, those ribs look phenomenal
Everything on that menu looks fantastic. Smoked oxtail definitely has me interested.
I'll definitely be going hear this weekend!!!
Can't wait!!!
I could watch this guy talk about food all day.
That bark on those beef ribs is unreal.
I love this channel. Even when I think the title is mundane, or sounds like something I've watched twenty times before, every single time I'm completely riveted to the screen. Whatever the topic, they are all spectacular IMHO.
I love it how it's missing a large TV personality blabbing on. It's just the artisans talking. I love it.
I have not gone too far back in the timeline, so I am hoping that it was always this way on Eater.
I love this Chanel too
Wow, I'm from Texas, and you are spot on with your technique !!!
