    A national anthem is a big part of a country's identity - it unites its people into one tune, one common sense of belonging and brotherhood. While every national anthem does that, the specifics about which emotion it uses to stir partriotism, what kind of emotion it uses and what words it picks are all dependent on a country's history and macro-psychology.
    In this video, I re-create a project by Lucas de Sa where I use K-Means clustering, an unsupervised learning algorithm to automatically classify all the national anthems of the world into five different groups.
    In the process we go through the alleys of data science, psychology and music - a cocktail of the many topics of interest you will find on India in Pixels.

      Not just Bengalis, almost all types of Indians
      The thing that strikes me the most is attachment of BDeshis to their pre-islamic roots. While praising Motherland is a strict no no in Islam, BDshis have clinged on to this tradition. In this aspect, they are a lot liberal and sympathetic than Pakistanis, a fact I admire among them.

      Most countries don’t have mandatory assemblies. And some opt out of singing their national anthem.
      I lived in Nigeria and completed my primary education there. But we sang both the Indian and the Nigerian anthem before classes so it varies. Afaik in the US children do not typically sing their national anthem except in some southern states

    • @altair738
      @altair738 2 роки тому +9

      Not really accurate. The current French anthem was indeed written in a revolutionary and anti-monarchy setting, but it's main "target", if you will, are the invading foreign armies following the fall of the monarchy (qu'un sang impur abreuve nos sillons...). Freedom features heavily in the anthem (liberté, liberté cherie, combats avec tes défenseurs...), but nothing about rights. It is definitely not about the fight at the Bastille - it's more of a rallying cry for troops against the invading Austrians (and Prussians).

    Here is the anthem of my country (Barbados). I couldn't find it on the map (#SIDSproblems 😢) but I have a feeling it got clustered into green based on the description.
    :: It begins with a sort of backstory talking about "our forefathers", and how throughout history they worked towards the country's independence, which was when the song would have been made.
    _In plenty and in time of need,_
    _when this fair land was young,_
    _Our brave forefathers sowed the seed,_
    _From which our pride is sprung_
    :: The next portion becomes more boisterous, emphasizing "pride", before mellowing out, and details what the country is proud of: previous accomplishments, overcoming great challenges as well as its ability to be its own nation and self-govern. It also states that that pride is what unites persons in the country.
    _A pride that makes no wanton boast of what it has withstood,_
    _That binds our hearts from coast to coast,_
    _A pride of nationhood!_
    :: The next part begins the chorus and is the most boisterous. Further, it is essentially a stern declaration of the country's independence.
    _We loyal sons and daughters all do hereby make it known,_
    _These fields and hills beyond recall are now our very own_
    :: The final part returns to low and mellow but serves as a promise each citizen makes. In the country today, this mentality is seen as perhaps an obligation stemming from the aforementioned pride, and a duty in honour of those that have come before. It all boils down to stepping up and changing the world. It's a pledge to 1) remember and protect the memory of the past, and 2) be bold and unwavering in determining the future.
    _We write our names on history's page,_
    _With expectations great,_
    _Strict guardians of our heritage,_
    _Firm craftsmen of our fate._
    I think this song explains a lot about Barbadian culture, including how the country approaches foreign policy. Barbados prides itself in making waves and being a little leader on the global stage. This is also expressed by the country's motto "Pride and Industry".

    Fun fact: some states have there own state anthems. As I'm from Andhra Pradesh our State anthem is " maa telugu talliki mallepoodanda"
    Means jasmine garland to our beloved mother telugu.( Here maa is not mother maa is "our" in telugu and talli is mother.) It would definitely come under motherly nature catagory. It Praises mother telugu , her land and rivers. It praises about our ancient queen and poets. And a promise we made to her.

    The clustering issue probably arose from the tf-idf technique. You see the term frequency (tf) is exactly what you said it is, but the inverse document frequency (idf) prioritizes rare words over common ones. Hence some anthems that had more rare words probably got a higher score. But since you were clustering only on the basis of similarity of anthems, the unique words made the anthems similar for clusters, when they weren’t.

But we are making them a source of contention. Every human is born as a single individual and can claim the legacy of the whole humanity. One shouldn't limit oneself at a single region. I am a human I own the legacy every Able human being.

    I feel you should make a part 2 of this .. for features use a prebuilt word embedding like the one provided by Stanford (glove vector) . Tf idf isn't a good text featuriser. That way the words will have better representation. Also you can classify national anthems using their tunes using GRUs . That'll be interesting to see as well. All in all I'm impressed with the effort you have put for this video.

    One tiny correction, at 6:31 the process that you explain is called lemmatisation.
    Stemming converts words into stems, which are often meaningless
    For example,
    shining -> shin (and not shine)
    shined -> shin
    shine -> shin

    One thing you might have missed is the two properties at 8:48. People might not know what those properties are; they are x and y coordinates for a point which tell us the similarity between points on a plane.
