I walked into a charity shop today and they had received some new shoe donations. The prices they decided to sell them for were less than %10 off the retail prices. They also had a Ralph Lauren shirt for £50. Who is walking into a charity shop to buy a shirt for £50. Also all the charity shops have upped the prices even on stuff typically only families will buy like puzzle boxes. So it isn't just to prevent reselling.

The thing is these charity shops think they’re doing them selves a service by upping all their prices because of ‘resellers’ now their stock just sits there because they’ve taken out the margin. So many times now for an example I’ve walked into the same charity shop and seen the same motorbike leather suit there up for £50 plus pounds. If it was up for £20 it would have been gone months ago and someone would have made that extra on eBay and they’d have had new stock out and a faster turn over. Could have maybe sold 3 motorbike suits for £25 a pop in the same time they’ve taken to try sell one for £50.
They think they can charge eBay prices with out doing eBay work.
If I go out to charity shop and buy something to sell online then I have invested capital into stock. Their stock is free. I then have to take make sure the item is fit for sale online do research on the product then take the photos and list the description. Or use knowledge that I’ve gained from time and effort of years of doing it to price the Item accordingly to what I know. I then have to pay tax out of my profit, I have to pay eBay fees out of the full amount and then I have to take the time to package it correctly take it to be sent off and then hope there’s no issue with postage to be able to get my maximum potential from an item. They open a FREE bag, load it onto a hanger and Chuck it on to a rail. Whilst having voluntary staff, paying 0 tax and 0 business rates. But resellers are the greedy ones 😂.
Resellers keep these charity shops alive because 90 percent of stock on their rails can be bought on Vinted for the same price. When they’re charging £4/£5 for plain primark t shirts and then wonder why their rails are full.
Charity shops in my opinion are good for just random shit things that you had when you were younger and stuff like that but for profit its to little reward for the time you have to put in. You know yourself you sit on Vinted long enough a day you’ll find items that are solid sellers and desirable and you have 0 risk in the fact you’re covered to send back if anything is wrong with the item too.
I hate finding something I really want in a charity shop now days because I hate to give in and pay them their stupid high prices so they think they get away with it. Worst thing is tho most of the time they do because with out sounding rude but to be perfectly truthful the majority of people who shop in charity shops are spending government money they haven’t earned so it’s easier spent. Some guy punching his cunt out for £60 hours a week to make ends meet doesn’t want to spend £40 on a timberland coat in a charity shop but someone who has no value of earning money does because it means nothing to them when they get it free. See it every time I’m out and about they’re just full of rems to put it politely 😂
As the comments state tho I think you just need to find the right charity shops, you still find those ones with little old nannas working in them and pricing stuff fairly and you know what I don’t ever care about chucking them that bit extra. They’re the best charity shops, now days you find some are trying to make boutique stores of the back of charity names, you go in to a store and it’s just the same style items everywhere. Give me the charity shops where you go in and they got stacks of VHS and shit like that haha they’re the ones you find the gems 😂.
They’ll never be fully dead because things will always slip through the cracks. For example.
Box of sunglasses out £ a pair. I found 6 pairs in their all worth +50. I sold one pair the other day for £180. 1980 gold plated driving aviators raybans. A early 2000s pair of oakleys, pair of Guccis and just a cheaper pair of rayban aviators. And then just some other Y2K style shades. Probably made 300 off £5. You have to learn your niche clothing too as well to catch them out. Found a band t shirt put out for £2 sold for £90 of a band I’d never heard of but I could just tell the t shirt was a band t where as others may have never picked it up. I could go on all day with good charity shop finds but over all they’re few and far between

I have no luck where I live, they are almost like boutiques rather than charity shops. Also I sold my old phone on eBay and couldn’t believe the amount of fees they took from the sale + they took promotion fees so ended up with around £60 less than what I actually sold it for. It’s like everyone’s out there to take everything you’ve got 😰

Charity shops have watched UA-camrs who do resale videos, so it's no wonder they have all upped their prices. 🙃

Yeah.. whoops! 😬 Luckily most resellers don’t rely or even bother with charity shops these days, like myself.

Now car boot sellers are catching on too. Prices definitely on the up there each week and sellers are much more savvy than they used to be. They watch reseller videos as well…it’s getting harder..

Still a stupid move by the charity shops, they have a limited customer base and square footage is money so if it’s too expensive then it’s taking up valuable revenue space.

as someone who primarily does charity shops, the one thing I've learned is you have to find the shops that don't check ebay prices, and also ask the shops when they stock up so you can grab the best items =)
    Great vid as always mate

Agree with most of that, also if resellers and actually anyone finds good stuff in charity shops then they will return, completing the circle f buying.

I have seen Oxfam selling second hand books for more than the original price printed on the back. Which i feel is a bit steep seeing as they pay reduced rates, get their stock for free and rely on volunteer staff

The thing with charity shops is that they are not only to raise money for charities but to also provide affordable clothes, home ect for those who need it who have now been priced out of it. I've seen items in some that are more expensive than when they were brand new.
They are more like beutique, hipster havens now then what they are actually supposed to be

I'm on low income always relied on charity shops for clothes now they just too expensive in my area. All the large charity shop chains price by looking online, selling on has been the downfall as they obviously want to stop it therefore charge more.

It's just so sad how charity shops have changed, it just doesn't give the same buzz anymore and you can't find quirky items so easily. I don't think it's all down to too many resellers, I know alot of good stock doesn't even make it into the shops anymore, it is filtered off by the charity to sell online or auction etc. It's a shame😫

Love the video 💛 Have you ever sold a pair of vintage adidas rekord?
Picked up a pair in a charity shop today for £6, very hard to find out what to price them as on eBay. Wondered if you had any ideas 😅😊

Sell loads you can afford not to make profit and ask for feedback from sellers. I know because I bought from seller doing just that I don't sell but was happy with item & price the deserved the good review to build their profile.

I honestly don’t think charity shops are dead, a lot now are wise to reselling and sell at half the ebay price to squeeze out the reseller but I still find bargains just not every day I go to them.

  • @pjmlfc05

I do feel that eventually this will spread to car boots too. I mainly look for video games. But people are pricing them near enough ebay prices or CeX prices. Much harder nowadays to get a good price, especially for retro games and consoles. I know you will always have people who just want to sell things quickly and take a low price but imagine if sellers wise up and do their homework as to how much they can sell their items for.

I am based in Havant, which is not too faraway from you I guess. The charity shops around here are dire. Did manage to pick up a pair of Nike Air force 1 trainers though for a tenner. Lasted me a while, but that was ages ago!

I’ve definitely noticed charity shops i’m familiar with being absolutely rammed with stock. One I hadn’t been to for a few months I was actually shocked at how rammed it was. I don’t think they are selling as much, but I could be wrong. I went to Havant to check out those shops a few weeks ago having not done so for a year or two. Holy cow. Not going go again! I don’t recommend Havant 😂

Just picked up a 40’s shaving mug and sold for £50 less fees
They do have an eBay shop but can’t check everything so this is our bread and butter

Im still finding lots in certain places, the bigger ones like Oxfam and red cross are pointless, dogs and cats trust price good for resellers and i got a huge haul at Acorns, lots of xbox 360 games at £2 including the Simpsons game that goes for £50 , I found a KORG guitar multi effects pedal board, no price - took it the counter and said no price, the guys gets his phone out and says 'ill just see what they are going on Ebay for' ... heart sinks ... ill leave it then
