as an autistic person myself I can say one thing his lifestyle while hard and difficult on the outside sound really relaxing to me just wandering about the entire day alone with my thoughts simply sounds like a nice thing I don't like being around other people Edit: and about the suit being for protection against being touched another thing I can really relate to
Ever since seeing forest gump I have wanted to actually try walking across the country. I used to walk to work everyday and it got to the point everyone in town knew me. They would give me rides to work or rides home. I would gladly take them up on the offer and thank them profusely. I had got to the point that I could walk the whole day and be fine. The legend of this guy only furthers that drive to want to walk across the whole country.
I was curious if anyone would known him. He's not a super obscure figure, but the only people I've met who know him are from New York or New England. Though he's had a few popular mentions in books and news reports, I think.
@@Pseudiom I think the only reason I know about him is that I'm from CT. I even remember seeing one of his shelters at one point, I think it was when I was on a field trip in elementary or middle school.
You know what's a travesty, though? The fact that I had to wait a day before having time to watch this video and it's still under 1000 views. You deserve better, Psu.
@@Pseudiom I think the "frontier" spirit is a trait that is very american. For a long time, much of the land was undeveloped. And living off the land was seen was cool, I guess. lol But I was refering to the classic song " rambling man" by Allman brothers band.
How interesting that mysterious people like this exist in many places. There was a homeless man in the streets of Havana who also dressed in strange clothes and was rumored to be French. He was popularly called the "Gentleman from Paris" but nobody knew where he came from. Rumors were he had become insane after losing his family in some tragedy. He wore a cape like a musketeer, was very polite to everyone, and spoke in an educated archaic style, sometimes in verse. Eventually, he died taking with him the secret of his origin. As the Leatherman, he was kind of a celebrity and is remembered long after his death.
I've been fascinated by this figure for years now. I grew up in CT but didn't hear about this historical oddity until I moved away, and that DeLuca book came out, and now it's lead me to this channel. Thanks for that! ... One correction though: The pronunciation of Greenwich is Gren-Itch not Green-Witch... it's pronounced as it is in England.
I think it's amazing how you can make stuff like this entertaining, even for a non American like me who cannot even point where Connecticut is on the map. Your content is great!
I grew up in Pound Ridge, NY and learned the legend of the Leatherman as a kid. He would visit a cave in what is today the Pound Ridge Reservation. A ten-kilometer race that passes by the cave is named "Leatherman's Loop" in his honor. There used to be a sign near the cave made as a boy scout project that recounted the legend of Jules Bourglay, but this was removed when the story was debunked and replaced with another plaque. There is also a small exhibit on the Leatherman in the town museum. Thanks for making this documentary, I learned a lot.
I wonder if the Leatherman suffered from some trauma or other mental illness that caused him to keep wandering from place to place, never settling, and remaining tight-lipped about his past, personal life and even real name. It's actually a sad tale of a man who was driven to become a wandering hermit by a persistent and unknown personal torment.
The REAL Leatherman, was the friends we made along the way! Also the hatred for the poor and transient has never died down. It's disgusting how they are treated by law.
The proposed names up at 23:33 are probably mostly corruptions of actual french names. "Mossey" coulde be Massé and "Boveliat" could be Bouvier, both of which are fairly common in Quebec. The obvious fake "Bourglay" could also be a corruption of Bourgelet which although not a common name is one that exists.
I'm from New England, live in Finland, recently came across the J. Karjalinen song Mennyt mies, looked up the lyrics, saw "Mä olen Uuden-Englannin nahkamies" which translates to "I am the New England leather man" and now here I am.
The Leatherman was well known by family. My grandpa told me his mother spoke often of him,how he would eat and stay in the barn. She said he would do odd jobs to repay her.
If anyone wants to know where one of his caves are there is one in BedfordHills NY (near the gas station) it’s really cool to know that I’m quite literally living in history! (In a way.)
Forced resettlement for homeless people is still a problem today. The City of New York lured a bunch of homeless onto a bus with the promise of a free meal. Suddenly they were in North Carolina.
I'm working on a game project and sometimes I just need some inspiration or ideas, and your channel has a lot of interesting content thay helps the gears start spinning. Thanks a lot!
I thought this was going to be about the Leatherman from the "I'll show you who's the boss of this gym is" meme but I ended up learning something new and interested instead.

That dude is my moral icon, Set on his own path and ignoring society unless needed. The Leatherman was A man beyond his time.

He was a rambling man, trying to make a living, doing the best they can.
Americans like rambling men (mans?). It must be something to do with the size of the country.

Yeah, I know. I was just observing because I think the instinct is/was really pronounced in Rock and Roll and American country music.
Never heard of this guy, thanks for the video.

He did not like modern times
Part of it was the vagabond laws so he likely found a path that worked well for him

Soon may The Leatherman come
We'll give him sugar and tea and rum 🎶
Last. Amazing content as always. Never uninteresting
Thank you! Always happy to release a new video.
You just blew my mind. Thank you.
I've seen him.
I hope the Leatherman finds a scholar to take up the mantle soon. This is such a fascinating story. Though part of me loves the mystery.

Lol. Maybe another day. That didn't even cross my mind with the name. This is a lot more safe for work.

Great doc. I wonder if there was any conjecture if he could be Acadian French as opposed to Quebecois.

Where did you find the black caricature of Leatherman you used for the thumbnail?
It's DSPGaming's ancestor.
RIP Leatherman, you would have loved minecraft
Maybe "I-zak" means "I Zach," as in, "I am Zach."
Wonder if he carried a multi tool
he just wanted to be free
🙂Please, remember to like...it helps open this Fantastic Story.
