  • The "Opinel" is probably one of the most famous french pocket knives. I tried to make a new handle for this small N°08 one and it was quite a cool challenge but in the end the result looks good !
    Probably the most difficult and dangerous part is finding the right blade for the table saw so it didn't cut too wide in the handle, and you must be aware of what you are doing to prevent kickback.

      I used a circlip plier. You can easily find them on Amazon www.amazon.fr/Silverline-PL65-courb%C3%A9-circlips-int%C3%A9rieurs/dp/B000LFXALU

    Мастер из категории рукож...пов, ручка кивая, клинок не по центру. Был нож, стала попа.

    Dude can you please link me to that little tool you used to hammer out the pivot pin? I always get the pins stuck halfway out and it's so frustrating 😣

      Ahah, I just used a pop rivet :D It was a bit smaller in diameter than the hole, so I could get the pin to the other side, and still take the rivet out

    I don’t get it..... buy an opinel in beech like the standard and then make a custom handle frame modelled on a cheap design... you had full reign for creativity......

      I made it just for fun. It was a good way to experiment to try to make a knife handle, and in the end I like it!

    Why to replace something good with another(maybe good...) thing?

    • @FrenchCoastWorkshop
      @FrenchCoastWorkshop  5 років тому +1

      Just because it was fun, and I wanted to try to make a new one! In fact, I bought this knife new just to remove the handle and make a new one :)

      @@FrenchCoastWorkshop The original is enough... He cut PERFECT, the handle is perfect(ible), the blade is super... You are not stupid and you are well skilled, try to do something good, not to modify the good... Don't be angry on me, I wish you all the best!

      @@FrenchCoastWorkshop P.S. I saw here some more stupid idea, to replace the blade of an opinel with new blade... Why? The blade is ok... The steel is super! What to change?

      I'm not angry at all, your comment is nice :) And, indeed, the original opinel is great. Actually, I carry one every day in my backpack. I just wanted to tr to make a new handle to learn new skills and, eventually, my handle is not as good as the factory one xD

    Coping saw would do a better job than the hacksaw.

    Too much wood was removed from the end (butt) of the handle, dangerously exposing the blade tip when in the closed position. It is always better to remove less wood at first and slowly work to the finished product. You can't put wood back after you have removed it.

      Totally true. I was to greedy and I failed :/

      @@FrenchCoastWorkshop :- That is how we learn. I guaranty that you won't do that again.
      I did much the same on an Opinel, but was able to grind down the exposed blade tip and hide it back in the handle
