Wonderful advice! I retired at 54 (now 60) and my wife and I are traveling like we always wanted to do. The key is to start investing ASAP (I started at 26), be very aggressive (we put it all in an S&P 500 fund and kept it there no matter what) and live well below your means (we saved 25-50% yearly). I hope a lot of young couples are watching your videos because they are in the best position to get it right!
Thanks. We hope a lot of younger people are watching as well. Always better to start the retirement planning as early as possible. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
More videos like this need to be made! I work in finance and it makes me so sad seeing so many retirees not having any savings at all and squandering their retirement years. Usually because it was always put on the back burner. I hope people listen to this amazing advice. My husband and I are dreaming up of our big retirement goals. Love watching you guys live out our possibilities ❤🎉
Thanks for the kind words. We agree there is too much debt and not enough savings today. Good luck with your big retirement goals and hopefully we can continue to inspire. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com

Thanks so much. We do love to help people and inspire everyone to live their best life in retirement. John and Bev PS You guys are so inspiring as well. Thanks. retirementtravelers.com
Great advice! I would add steps at the beginning and end. Step 0: Save and buy your home as early as you can (before prices go up). If you have a spare room, rent it out and use that income to pay down the mortgage. Continue with John's advice. Last step: Once the house is paid off (much earlier than 30 years), lease it out and use that extra income to travel. You still have a home in case you want to stop travelling and it has appreciated while you were out playing.
Some great tips. Under different circumstances we may have done this, but we were paying very high HOA and golf fees, and had some limitations on renting. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
As always, thanks for sharing. Great advice from your financial advisors. I think it is tempting when people reach a certain age and/or income level (it has been for us) to want to buy the second home, the boat or the RV. The expenses associated with owning any of those items can delay your retirement. It is not uncommon for HOA fees of condos in destination locations to be $500 to well over $1,000 a month. The average person under the age of 65 uses their RV only 16 days a year. Now, if having a second home, a boat or an RV is your thing and you use it a lot, there is nothing wrong with that. Just be realistic on the cost of owning it and how much you will realistically be able to use it. My 2 cents. -M
Thanks for the wisdom and for following along. Lifestyle creep happens to the best of us and is so easy to do. Hopefully this will help others not fall into the same traps. Thanks again! John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
Amazing video, A friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got to talking about investment and money. I started investing with $150k and in the first 2 months, my portfolio was reading $274,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and get more interesting. For over a year we have been working together making consistent profit just bought my second home 2 weeks ago and care for my family.
@keanureeves316 However, if you do not have access to a professional like JUDITH ANN PEACE, quitting your job to focus on trading may not be the best approach. It is important to consider all options and seek guidance from reliable sources before making any major decisions. Consulting with an AI or using automated trading systems can also be helpful in managing investments while balancing other commitments..
Love watching all your videos John & Bev - u are a true inspiration to others to travels as YOLO! watching your vids inspired us to travel Europe & we had a blast!!- keep the vids coming.. Cheers W
John you should be careful with the fees your paying -- even at 1% AUM that will erode 1/3 of your entire wealth over your retirement since it's a compounding uncapped fee.
John and Bev, Great video and it is so true. I enjoy the videos you are sharing and thanks for all the advice over the years. Yes, this semi-retired life is awesome. Ed
Thanks for sharing your great financial advice to retire early! How is Bev's toe doing and is it dry on the north island? I went to New Zealand in January and we had rain every day and it wasn't as fun as we hoped for. Bev might want to swim or ride a bike for non-impact support to build her toe back. Keep traveling and sharing your great advice! Happy Retirement!
Thanks so much for the kind words and Bev is healing nicely. North Island was nice. We have since moved on to Taiwan, Vietnam, and Cambodia. Some amazing memories and thanks for following along on our journey. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
Newbie subscriber and I absolutely love watching your vids John and Bev! I am super conservative in nature and while I have a long way to go in age to usual retirement age, we’ve been debt free since our 20s (kept to the advice to stay in the same house we purchased and paid it off in our 20s as well, 45-50% saving and investing, etc) and continuing to live that way will get us there faster than I think it will. I always have a scarcity mindset even though my brain tells me and I’ve met with a CFP and even he is like ummm you guys are fine lol!! It’s so much the mindset and I have a hard time accepting the fact that we are in a good position. Perhaps sharing your thoughts on what tools you guys had to address this would help- cheers from the Midwest!
Thanks so much for following along and great job on your savings. We lived many years in the midwest, in southern Indiana. Great place to raise our family. Our financial planners have great tools to run many different scenarios based on your situation and give you probabilities of success. They are a wonderful young couple in the West Palm Beach area and could do a video call with you. Tell them you know the Retirement Travelers and they will smile. We don't get anything from it other than we want to help people. Best of luck to you with your retirement plans and stay in touch. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/

We have accomplished our goals to travel comfortably. Thanks so much for all your advice. Now beginning our travels in September, please answer this question. There are a slew of vaccinations we were advised to take...malaria, shingles, polio, hepatitis A & B, yellow fever, meningitis, etc. Did you take all these vaccines before all your travels?
Yes, we’ve done them all. We haven’t actually taken the malaria yet, but we have the pills. Congrats and good luck with your travels. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
We, my wife and I, married 19 years, are "financially free". We have no mortgage. We are able to save a lot more then normal. We could theoretically retire early. BTW she (my wife is from Vietnam and an accountant/CPA). I am a mechanical engineer (born in Chicago.. Asian Indian background). We are "super savers".
Quick informative video…..r u guys just letting ur HSA sit for if n when u return to the States? Bev, hope ur toe/foot is healed. Good content as always
Hi Ann. John and Bev CAN use their HSA while out of the country, as long as the medical procedure is legal in the country they're visiting. Keep in mind, HSAs function as an IRA once you turn age 65. You can then use the funds for ANY expense (not just medical!); you just have to pay tax on your withdrawals, just like you would from a retirement account. All the best!
I always thought retirement means you have enough money to live on until you die without having to work anymore. I.e., if you need a side hustle to make ends meet each month then you’re not really retired. We don’t have enough saved despite fest efforts & wont get enough from the gov’t to last us until death so will have to earn until we die to make up that shortfall. What that will look like is still up in the air. Short of a windfall we will never really retire. I know we are not alone in this.
Side hustles can be fun, learning opportunities that you can do together with your spouse. We don't think of it as "work" per se. We can quit anytime, but don't want to. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
You have to be 59 and 1/2 to withdraw from a 401k or Roth IRA with paying penalties. How are people retiring early? If you max out your 401k and Roth starting at 20. You will still have to wait until you are 60 to use it.
You are right, it becomes more of a challenge under 59.5. Some options are pension, deferred compensation, passive income, other savings, etc. An additional strategy is to sell everything like we did and dramatically reduce your expenses. It is possible, but takes a lot of planning. Thanks again for the comment, John and Bev
72t rule for IRA withdrawal allows penalty-free withdrawals at any age (subject to IRS constraints, of course), and this, coupled with after-tax investments/savings has allowed me to retire at 49, and for my wife and me to travel the world as we deem appropriate.
Thank you for the info. I guess I am behind on the HSA accounts, they used to be if you didn’t use all the money you put in within the year you lost it. It happened to me in the 1980s I anticipated heavy medical bills from having children but didn’t need as much as I thought. And couldn’t use the rest had no other medical bills, so I lost over $800 . I wonder when this changed and I missed out on several years of putting money in. I am 63 and want more than anything to travel the world . Not sure how at my age I am going’s to do that. Thank you for sharing 😊
