  • In this video we take a look at the fry which resulted from the spawning that took place one week ago in the early hours of Saturday 9th May.
We give some thoughts to the second spawning of the season, and also the use of carbon water purifiers, a subject which will be discussed more on a later video.

Looking good, I don’t think a few dodgy fry are anything to worry about, you can look at it two ways.
    1. Something has happened to them and they hatched fine.
    2. There was something not right with them in the egg but you have everything so spot on that they hatched anyway where they may not have under less perfect circumstances.
I can’t wait until they are big enough to get a rough idea of numbers, I’m betting there’s a lot. 🤞😁

Mark if you reduce the input volume on your mic it will stop it clipping and vibrating mate. Just thought I would let you know, better to have quieter sound and then make it louder in the edit than have it vibrating on the channel. great video though and fry looking fantastic

Hi Mark, I like the honest way you say 'potential' benefit regarding the use of a purifier. I am also undecided as are many within the hobby and profession (as long as trickles are used) regarding the necessity for purifiers. For clarity, when you say you cannot get a chlorine reading when you run a trickle at half a litre a minute (no purifier), is that from the main body of pond water? Good luck and keep up the excellent content.

Hi, that's a measure of the water straight from the tap at half a litre per minute, running off approx 1 litre into a jug, then adding a DPD4 tablet to a 10ml sample and looking for an instant colour change, as per the method described by Syd Mitchell here - www.mankysanke.co.uk/html/effective_dechlorination.html
Previously, i.e. before returning to purifier use, my 0.5lpm trickle was added at the exit of the Nexus unit (from a height of around 5-6". Before getting near to the pond itself it ran through a pump, heater, UV, several meters of pipe, and splashed into the water on entry. Neither the DPD4 nor a Hanna Free Chlorine test would give a reading.
Over 24 hours that's obviously 720 litres of fresh water running in, equivalent of around 13% of total system water volume.
In discussions with various people on the subject at the moment, will post more soon, here or on www.Nishikigoi.Life

There looks great pal. I spawned my koi on the same day. Not on the same scale as you as I've never done it before. Mine don't seem anywhere near as developed as yours it's strange. Only just getting the odd couple free swimming today, most are still feeding on the egg sack. If you get a chance have a look at my clip, see what you think

Peter, the one that is back on now - having been used and rejected last year - www.vyair.com/10-inch-hma-3-stage-pond-dechlorinator.html with the the silver series cartridge set.
I also used an EA 30" unit briefly last year.
My expectations were perhaps too high last year.

Mark, take 2 eggs and put the into a blender for a few seconds. After blitzing add a little boiling water and blitz again. Pour this out into a suitable container, like a 500ml water bottle. I added 10 spoons of SMA baby powder to the blender with a little cold water, and again blitzed to mix. Add that to the eggy water, shake to mix, top up the bottle if necessary. I also added a teaspoon of the ZM100 dry powder food as well and shook well to mix. I was using a water bottle with sports cap so it made it easy to squirt the water on the surface, alternatively make a small hole in the bottle cap so you can squirt it out. Then it's just a matter of feeding little and often.
