I only just started making plushies, but so far Bernat Blanket yarn is my favorite!! It’s soft, snuggly, and I’m addicted to how it feels! ❤
But I’m also a touch biased cause I like those plush/velvety type yarns 😂

I think Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling is great for beginners! Switching from knitting to crocheting I was very clumsy and had so much trouble with splitting stitches, but for whatever reason their anti-pilling yarn stays together very easily and it’s difficult to split stitches even with very sharp inline hooks! It also feels pretty soft, is so easy to wash, and for my knitters out there it’s my favorite for brioche stitch and other textured patterns because it’s thick and soft but has plenty of squish to it, which is coincidentally great for plushies and amigurumi also!
And they’ve also got their Skein Tones color palette which is great for animal fur and more importantly amigurumi dolls with different human complexions!

I appreciate seeing yarns at different price points. I have been using Knit Picks Brava worsted to make toys for Christmas gifts. I really like it. It is an acrylic yarn but it doesn't squeak when I crochet tight stitches (that drives me crazy). I got it on sale for $3.19 for a 100 gram skein. The color selection is not as good as some other yarn lines, but I could find colors that worked for the toys I was making. I also really like Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn. I make toys for kids who will play with them so these yarns work great. When I make decorations for myself I use wool or wool blend yarns. They are much easier on my hands. Thanks for all of the great information. You do the investigating and we get the benefit!

Wow! Love all of your beautiful projects! I can't believe you made color work socks for your first pair of hand knit socks. Amazing! My favorite project that I made this year was the Rusty Cardigan on Ravelry. It's a free pattern. It fits me perfect because I did a swatch like you're supposed to and which I didn't used to do. Now I know why swatching is so important. Here's to another year of beautiful makes. P.s. I made over 200 knit or crochet socks, hats, baby blankets, dish cloths, doll clothes, sweaters, baby quilts, and I even knit a sheep and several gnomes. Most of these items were donated to various charities, but the 21 pairs of socks I knit are Christmas gifts or for me. I knit two sweaters for myself and hope to do more next year. Oh and one crochet sweater for me too. :) :)

I've only ever used Red Heart Super Saver because that's the most readily-made available for where I live (there's a reason why I sometimes call Vermont "Voidmont", LOL! I've never really educated myself with what other kinds of yarns other people use to make amigurumi, and now...I've got 10+ bins FULL of mostly Red Heart stuff, with the exception of some bulky yarn for when I made super-sized gryphons.
I might need to go through a good chunk of yarn before I really should get more yarn because I'm seriously running out of space in my art studio room! 🤣

It’s inexpensive, but feels great, crochets nicely and doesn’t seem to have a pilling problem. And bonus-it comes in so many colors! I have a temperature blanket gift that I’ll be making soon and the color selection isn’t what I’m wanting with red heart for it.

I trust your videos regarding yarns, as you have obviously tested them out for your use. The fact that you also researched yarns of varying price points, gives me further information for my amigurumi. Having allergies to rough wool yarns has me cautious of anything not merino, silk or alpaca. However, the Berroco Vintage appears to be okay for my hands. Bonus, the LYS beneath my condo SELLS it!

Love your videos and how you share your knowledge, reviews etc. I do not make amigurumi or other 3-D items, just flowers, doilies, etc.
But I wanted to ask you or any of your viewers who make tiny amigurumi if you have ever used a sewing thread from Sulky called Filaine. It is a 12 wt. 100% acrylic thread (about the equivalent to a size 80 tatting thread). I just bought some to try making some flowers with. It is Awesome!!! It is soft, very durable (designed to be used on sewing machines, so yes.) and super lightweight. The flower I made from it is just Awesome!! And they even sell a brush to use with it to make the thread (on machine embroidery projects) have a real fur look to animals that are made with it.
That gave me the thought of doing that with amigurumi animals to give them a 'real fur' look. There is a video that Sulky made to show how it's done on one of their Holiday cat patterns Christmas in July (just type in Sulky Filaine in the YT search). It is a Neat effect!! Let me know if you have worked with this thread for making these and your thoughts about it. Happy Hooking all!! 😇

I have a ball of merino that I've had for years. I could only afford one ball but lordy is it beautiful to hold against my neck. SO soft and luxurious. I know I'll probably never be able to afford more so i just keep it in it's original ball and occasionally hold it and smile. I guess I'll have to decide which of my children will inherit the $45 ball of merino 🤣. I do think that more mid priced yarns tends to be more pleasant to work with. I don't normally work with any cotton except for pot holders/hot pads. Cotton is so durable for kitchen.

Prior to coming to the US I tried Nako Calico, Balloon amigo pingouin, and Copito. That last one is a Colombian brand and being 100% acrylic is insane how great it is, feels like a blend, it's soft, great saturation, glides like butter, stitch definition is perfect! I miss it so much. If I ever go back to my home country, I'll bring you some jajajajaja Other than that, I made a red panda fully with I love this Yarn, and it was great! I like it! I have yet to try other value yarns like Loops and Threads, Big Twist value/soft were not bad, and I strongly dislike Red Heart for amigurumis.

I make most of my amigurumi from Knit Picks yarn, but I purchase from the WeCrochet website bc it has a lower minimum for free shipping. I really like Cotlin, it's a cotton/linen blend and looks great if you want to make a more vintagey or rustic looking toy using cotton. It is a little rough though so I can see that it might be uncomfortable to work with for some people... Mighty Stitch is another good one. It's 80% acrylic, 20% wool and is SO SOFT and smooth in the hand. comes in bright colors and is very strong for seaming. I think you might like the feeling of that one, Elise. the yarn definitely has a shine too it though and the colors are quite vibrant and bold, so it has a more modern look while still having a halo. Their Swish worsted and dk yarns are a 100% merino wool that I actually found to be plenty strong for seaming! I've done a pull test on it and I can't break it even if I put all my force into it. I've only tried that on the worsted weight though so I'm not sure about the dk. I really enjoy knit picks as you can see but I really want to try the berroco vintage at some point, it looks beautiful!

I'm currently working on an amigurumi project for a Christmas gift, and I'm using Cascade Yarns Ultra Pima. It's a 100% cotton yarn, DK weight, and I love it! It's soft and it comes in 59 colors! It's about 3.5 oz (100 grams) and it's $13.50 a hank, but I buy it online from WEBS and it's usually part of their WEBS discount. If you spend $60 on eligible yarn, you get 20% off, which is pretty easy to do, and 25% off if you spend $120. If I did my math correctly, without a discount, it comes to about $3.86 per oz, and with the discount, it comes to about $3.09 per oz, so it looks like It falls somewhere between the premium and luxury yarns. I also use Knit Picks Brava worsted sometimes and Redheart super saver yarn, but I think I'm going to try out some of the budget friendly yarns you mentioned and see if I like those better than the Redheart, which I find to be rough and scratchy.

Question: would you be interested in trying out some of the more readily available (in the US) budget yarns such as Red Heart Super Saver (I call it "scratchy saver"), Lion Brand Pound of Love, Caron One Pound, Mainstays, Loops and Threads, I Love This Yarn, and Big Twist? I typically do not like to use these budget yarns but you can get SO MANY toys made out of these and some of them have quite a lot of color options. Also, I am wondering how Caron Simply Soft would hold up and work up as an amigurumi yarn. I find it to be quite splitty but slick and soft and shiney.
I am a big time lover of Hobby Lobby's yarns. Yarn Bee seems to have some really unique yarns with all kinds of different blends and textures which I just love. For a basic yarn, I Love This Yarn is really my go-to as it's the softest of the bunch, but Big Twist is my second go-to due to softness. I'm surprised at the scratchiness of Lion Brand's yarn. Also, nearly forgot about Bernat's Value yarn and the Crafter's Secret (which is, I think, WORSE than scratchy saver!).

My favorites are I Love This Yarn, (not the cotton or neon or anything. Just the original,) the Red Heart With Love, (though I'm not sure they make it anymore?) Impeccable that I found at Michaels, and sometimes the Caron One Pound yarns that I've seen at Michaels and Jo Anns. The Caron is especially good for me because I can buy the one color and make a whole bunch of hats with it, which is exactly what I'm gonna do. I got a blue one recently, so I'm gonna use all of it to make the Tardis hats to sell at the next Long Island Who Con.
I feel like the ones I get are cheap-to-mid price point. If I got anything expensive, it would up the price I sell them for, and I don't want to up anything yet. Maybe if I do a one of a kind item in the future, but I'll see.
I gotta ask, though - while I love the look of the finished product, (the bunny, in this case,) is it really annoying working with yarn that has that fluffiness/halo to it?

Thank you!! Just binging your videos now haha, but have you ever tried milk cotton yarn? I've been scouring all the types of yarn I can find but I think my favourite right now is still milk cotton (cotton + casein fiber) - I'm a super junior newbie though, so I don't actually know if it's the best (although I touched everything at my local Michael's and didn't find anything more comfortable - except silk & shiny in ice toffy) and curious about your opinion! I find it's super soft, not very stretchy but quite silky (could be great for those that are sensitive too). I wonder if it could be a bit drapey due to the smoothness, but I've found so far it holds shape really well (and most importantly super nice on my hands), although definition is not very clear since it has a tendency to unwind.
I have a lot of trouble sourcing it though (and the ones available have shipping premium)... Also, have you tried bamboo blends?

I have not tried milk cotton, but there are a lot of people who love it! It's not available in my area, but if you love it that's great! And I also have not tried bamboo! 🧶🧶🧶

@@EliseRoseCrochet Maybe consider some of these blends if you can't quite work with cotton but love a lot of its properties? Although your wool and blended stuff is absolutely beautiful haha, but could be some more things to consider. I find it soo comfortable.
Thanks for your response! And your wildly informative & entertaining videos :)

Would you consider creating a printable chart with your yarn reviews and recommendations? I can’t remember the ones you say you like and why and I really appreciate your opinion!

That's a great idea!! I should make a chart and put it on the blog! Thanks for the recommendation! 🧶🧶🧶
